I was just wondering if anyone was applying to DCOM and/or if anyone has had interview yet? I have couple friends attending first class and they love it. Its one of my top choices!
 
I am applying it is my first choice school as well, I'm probably a long shot for this year but I'm going to give it ago anyway and hope for the best.

Last time I talked with the director of admissions he they told me they hadn't even started looking at applications yet, they are still trying to get their feet on the ground
 
when did you call DCOM? they told me the adcom was going to meet next week to decide interviews. sheesh I'm a longshot too but the past few months I've put DCOM at the top of my list.

Why do you say you're a long shot? You look like an alright applicant to me?

I'm excited about all the positive things I've heard regarding LMU DCOM. I'll be applying here as well. Good luck to you guys/girls!

I agree you don't look like a long shot to me, but hey lets hope the long shots rule this year.

my MCAT destroys me. I dont think my GPA is high enough to counteract it so I think I'm a longshot. I'll probably go crazy if they even give me an interview. Good luck to everyone.
 
Well sounds great! I also have a long shot because of my mcat scores. Do you guys think its to late to take mcat again in sept for DCOM?

I'm not taking the mcat until Jan and they said although it will put me at a disadvantage I still have a chance.
 
Oh really!! Well than I can take it on Sept 11 or January but I bet it will be extremely hard to get an interview unless you get an outstanding mcat score.

It might be a bit late to find a seat for the Sept. MCAT dates, but good luck...plus, I think w/rolling admissions, they may not mind a later date. I'd contact the schools you're interested in.

That's what I am going to do; I'm applying now with my current score and then I'm hoping to squeeze a few more points out of the MCAT in January (just in case), at which point, I'm going to update any schools that are considering me as a candidate. It couldn't hurt... well, the MCAT will but the effort won't. 👍

Yep, the osteopathic medical schools are thankfully on a later overall schedule than the allopathic schools - which could be a slight detriment with the overflow but I'm not overly concerned. 😀👍


I added a few more schools earlier this week and LMU-DCOM was one of them. Since I already mailed through AACOMAS a couple of times early on, the app should be mailed relatively quick.
 
I called DCOM today and they said that they would accept the January MCAT. I'm so greatful b/c the July 24th MCAT kicked by butt!!! I have felt like throwing up since I found out my scores. I'm so thankful that I have another shot at the MCAT in Jan. for this cycle. On a side note, the admissions people there are so friendly!!!! Way to go DCOM!!

I also took the July 24th mcat and did not score anything close to my AAMC practice tests. I am debating on taking the mcat again in sept 11 or wait till January.

But don't you think January is kinda to late because the scores wont come out not until beginning of Feb and interviews would be pretty much over and class almost filled up.

I also agree DCOM admission are super friendly!!!👍
 
I do think it's late but it's the only chance I have to bring up my score dramatically for the 2008 cycle. I'm finishing up a few classes right now so Jan would be optimal for me..but agreed..less favorable for addmissions into the class of 2012. Best wishes!
 
Ive been reading your post and I just wanted to interject my two cents on the MCAT timing. I am DCOM class of 2011 and I didn't send my secondary in until Feb. I was called for an interview within a few days and interviewed the first part of March. I was waitlisted and got in the beginning of June. Some people from my interview group got in right away but they were from TN and I was not. I guess what I'm trying to say is don't discount finalizing your application late, you can still get in if you do well in your other areas. It's not an ideal situation but don't give up! They interview through April I think and in my class I think they took someone off the waitlist a few days before class started. Hang in there DCOM is a great school, the best in my opinion. Totally worth the wait! If you all have any questions please feel free to PM me. I'm not here as much as I used to be but I'll answer any questions you have 😀

I interviewed for class of 2011 and was waitlisted, but was one of 5 accepted for next years class. I applied late (December if I remember right), had a 23 MCAT, 3.4 GPA, and a whole lotta volunteer experience. They told me that they are looking for people with a burning desire to become great physicians, and will find a way to become a great physician no matter how many schools tell them they will never make it. I was a VERY long shot and still made it mostly to my perserverence and volunteerism. Hope this inspires others to keep fighting.

I think DCOM's ADCOM is reviewing applications this week sometime. I'm so nervous I hope I at least get an interview.
 
My interview was in March, so pretty late in the cycle. I would note in the application about the later MCAT and call, what bad can it do?

I just wanted to give you all the best of luck for getting interviews, and eventually acceptances (anywhere, not just DCOM, eventhough DCOM rocks 😀)

Waiting for a response is really hard, but those interview invites are definitely worth the wait. I think you all would be very pleased with DCOM. The profs are amazing (honestly, no blowing smoke up your butt). Some are better than others, but overall, they are stellar. The building is awesome as well - just wait until you see the student conference rooms, anatomy and OMM labs, and the other technology we have. I LOVE taking all of my notes on a labtop. The tablets freaking rock and make life so much easier by not having to lug around notebooks, binders, and all that other jazz.

Again, good luck getting interviews and I hope I get to meet you all when you come out. I will definitely stop by each interview group to see and talk to you guys. I might even be able to give y'all the tour and lunch. It'll be fun 😀 👍

Okay, guys, heres my cliff notes. I graduated from JMU in 2006, been working and taking a few grad classes as a non degree seeking student. I am currently retaking some of the blemishes from my undergrad, biochem, physiology and physics. Taking physics at VCU in Richmond and after Dr. Leo approved this, I am taking biochem and physiology in a hybrid course through berkley, in which you attend the lectures via blackboard and they mail the tests to a proctor at your school. Tons of volunteer experience, EMS, etc. Cum. undergrad 2.9 Took the MCAT prior to physics in 2005 and scored 19S. Taking it again this Friday. I have been talking all summer long with Dr. Leo (very nice guy) and he gave me the impression that with improved MCATs to 24 or better I would stand a shot. I submitted to AACOMAS this friday. Basically, I wanted to feel things out from you guys about DCOM admissions for these type numbers, and any tips you guys might have for the interview process if I am lucky enough to get to that point. Im only applying to DO schools, Im from Virginia (which Dr. Leo said is a plus), Im very passionate about primary care and Ive been scoring 25-26 on practice tests.

Please please please any advice you have is more than welcome.

I still havent heard anything yet from them and they still havent emailed me back.... I cant stand the wait. I wish they would tell me either way if I get an interview or not. 🙁

I'm trying to get a feel for DCOM admissions myself. I would submit your primary if you haven't done so already. Then once you get your MCAT score back, you'll have a better understanding of your chances. I've heard of several cases where <3.0 are accepted. It helps that you're retaking courses and being proactive. Also, being a non-traditional student from the App. region is probably a plus. If I were you, I would make sure your application/LORs/essays are all ready to go by the time your MCAT scores come back next month. Good luck with the process!
 
Hey DCOM Applicants!

We had our first test yesterday and our first anatomy lab practical tomorrow, so things are pretty crazy at school. For those of you who have not heard anything from DCOM yet, please don't worry. They just starting looking at files a week or two ago, so that have not yet gone through every application. I know the waiting sucks, but things will happen shortly. As of a couple of weeks ago, they had 400+ applications and there is no way they can go thru that many in one or two adcom meetings, plus the new apps they have gotten since then. Things will happen, I promise.

As for any tips, the biggest I can give you is to be sincere. You don't have to beat around the bush about topics, nor do you have to be some super, mighty, powerful, all-intelligent student to be accepted. They want to see who YOU are. Tell them your passions because those are things you can really talk about with interest and vigor. But don't be fake either. They can spot that a mile away. Also, ask questions. Don't be afraid to talk to the faculty members, they are all super nice. Also, you guys will have the advantage of talking to us, the students, (something we didn't have) so take advantage of that too. Don't be afraid to ask - please. Another thing, not every answer needs to be rehersed. On every interview I went on, I had at least one question where I told my interviewers, "Wow, that is a really good question," and actually thought about it for a few seconds. That is OK to do. It shows you are listening to the question and are engaging in the conversation, not just spitting back some verbal diarrhea that sounds generic. Finally, RELAX and ENJOY the day.

I want to second what nascardoc said it is all great advice when interviewing at DCOM or any school for that matter. Be yourself because as much as you want to go to medical school you also want to make sure that school is right for you. Trust me you don't want to be miserable for 4 years at a school you don't fit into. On a personal note I highly recommend DCOM I can honestly say it is the perfect school for me I am very happy to be here. I would recommend it to anyone!
Some logistical advice is to book your hotel as soon as you get your interview. I mean when you schedule the interview and your trip, your next call should be to the hotel (if you plan to stay the night). It is a small area here with few hotels and they fill up fast. You don't want to get stuck driving in if you don't have to. Also I agree with nascardoc talk to the school, all the staff and faculty are very friendly and willing to help. Why wonder when you can have the answer. Just be patient they are going through tons of applications right now in addition to blazing a trail for us in the first class.

how long does it take AMCAS to update MCAT scores to schools? do we have to do anything? I think DCOM is waiting on my new scores (unfortunately). 🙁

I would call DCOM and see if they will take a printout of the scores from on-line or just an update letter from you until your official scores post.
 
I must say I had the same concerns when going to a new school. I almost did not apply to LMU-DCOM last year. I am glad I did. So far the problems stated above that I was expecting, I haven't seen. They seemed organized from day 1. The only construction going on is the 4th floor which is being prepared for PA program starting in 2009 and the nursing students are on the 3rd floor. The construction outside on the roads don't affect our studying. Ofcourse there are painting going on sometimes but but that is ignored in the midst of our soon head and neck examination where everyone is trying to survive.Everything seems perfect, I don't even feel like I am in a new school. We have already have two nice lecture halls with all our lectures recorded, actually they are live streamed and about 7.5% of our class watch the lectures from home whiles classes are going on. Our anatomy and OMM lab were up and functioning from day 1.
I am really impressed with the adminstration and how they are handling the school. They planned the curriculum well and organized the exams to prepare us for the boards. We have well experienced professors who are very helping and working with us to see this work. They also have very good rotation sites set up for us and well planned ahead. I am not saying that its a 100% perfect but I must say that its close to that for a new school. There are problems with the new technology of course here and there but the computer tech people get on it right away. They even have overnight on call service for our labtops with any problems we might have overnight. We did have new labtops(Tab PC) for the inaugural class, not anymore for the upcoming classes.
For someone who was nervous about coming to a new school, I have never been happier, I am actually content.
Hang in there though, things will get better.
 
I am from NY and didn't know what to expect when i got here..but trust me folks no matter which part of the country all you guys will be coming from this place will thoroughly impress you. Its a peaceful town, the mall's 5 minutes away, student housing is available, things will only get better in the future..now DCOM is like a monument in harrogate. Its a beautiful school with top notch facilities and a superb faculty. So i dont know what else you need out of a school..i am always critical of things and i should say that i am so proud to be a part of DCOM. Oh by the way, you guys being the second class will have to make sure that each one of you don't miss out on interacting with the first year kidz..we'll give you guys the best input in terms of study habits, books you need, and times to have fun!! I wish you all the best in the admissions process..also make sure you folks bow your heads when you see students from class of 2011 j/k hehe

You can google hotels/ motels in Tazewell and New Tazewell. It's not as close as Cumberland Gap (or as quaint) but it will serve you fine.

did you call the hotel directly and tell them that you have an interview at DCOM? the school arranges a certain # of rooms for interviewees and this happened to me as well. call them up real quick and see if they have one.

I got accepted to lmu-dcom last week! Also received acceptances from ccom and wsu-boonshoft school of medicine....and I liked them all!! so we'll see what happens!

Woohooo, got the acceptance phone call from Dr. Stowers Tuesday morning!!!! This is my first and probably most wanted acceptance. I'm still waiting to hear if I even will get an interview from VCOM, but I dont know that they will be able to offer me anything better in terms of school that would make me want to go there over DCOM. Im so super stoked about getting in! Im ready to start planning where Im gonna live and everything!

I am also coming to LMU next year! Where are you all planning on living? I live in Knoxville now, but I am thinking either the student housing or maybe checking for an apartment in Middlesboro for next year. I know hoss has family. What about the rest of you?
