Welcome and congrats!!

Hang in there, the rest of your classmates will be there soon! 😉

I interviewed in January, and was accepted. I moved into the Tazwell area, and can not wait for August 1! I think I found a pretty good job, but its lab work at night. Why can't I start now 🙂 ? I saw the Pink ceremony picture in the newspaper, for cancer research. That's real cool. I know being part of DCOM is going to be the best thing in my life. Its beautiful here and I love the area. What can I do until then? One thing though, I found it very interesting that this is the first year a criminal back ground check is performed, which I have no problem with....yet after getting a letter of acceptance and depositing 2K for the seat, what will happen to students that get kicked out due to their consumer or criminal or credit or traffic background? This process needs to be initiated when candidates apply through the service in D.C. because thousands are spent when including original application sent to the schools from that service, then the additional fees for secondary applications and then travel expenditures for interviews. Just think, after all that, too be rejected after a letter of acceptance. I feel sorry for anyone who loses out.
I can't wait for classes. I'm going stir crazy it seems. See you all real soon. Class of 2012~Is On the Way
Background checks are done in high level jobs, they are part of the academia as well to rule out those law breakers! However, your traffic violations won't be a problem..i had many myself. I wouldn't sweat it unless you are hiding your role in the mafia..come clean now or you are screwed 🙂
We'll let you know when we make the plans to get together. If you're available, you should definitely join us.Indeed, with all the testing and boards, and late nights ahead of us a background check is a small step, I was just worried about other people. But yes, I'm in Tazwell and there are no waves to surf here. I raked the yard, boring....I am waiting on a reply to a job hopefully today or tomorrow, boring....I need work until school starts up. Knoxville, which way is that? 😀
Let me get situated and of course I would love to meet some of the rockin' students of 2012! Who wouldn't? Nah, everyone, the 2011 students, teachers, I really get a kick out of the area, VA is so close as is KY. Mom is only 7 hours away in central VA. My summers at Cheasapeake might not happen so, yes, lets hook up some time. Right now, I'm sitting at a coffee shop, bored. I need work. We need classes. So funny, its actually happening. I mean, all the undergrad stuff, MCATs, shadowing, working with patients, applications, interviews. Congratulations to everyone and to those trying to get in here or elsewhere, it will happen. If its in your will, stick with it. No matter what. Let me get out of here, I was checking out all the cute dog pictures some people had put up. Sheesh, I'm getting a mean looking great dane or something. I have two extra rooms, quite small, but up in the hills and a back yard. I need a horse, a horse shoe pit and a bbq grill. Have a great spring break everyone.
Aloooooooohaaaaaaaa!

Its Aloha Friday, No Work Till Monday....and of course Good Friday! Happy Easter everyone. Where is everyone from? What kind of route did you take getting into Debusk College of Osteopathic? I admit, the school itself is incredible. The principles, the people who will instruct us, the students already there....I feel lucky. We all got to give them the best we got. I picked up a grill today and had some BBQ. Its 60 degrees. I'm enjoying summer now, cause when its summer, the days get shorter and its over. Guess thats from my Alaska days. See you all soon. Today I'm heading into Virgina to the national park. Got a horse lined up to take the ridge. Ciao!
Ah, also, if anyone is finding good sites for books, or knows what all the bookstore offers in a package or anything, pass it on to us.
I'm having a pre-school summer BBQ in July and everyone's invited (2011 and 2012)! Stay sane until the rest of us get out there! 🙂
BBQs are the shyt! I'll be there spittin rhymes

That's so cool! I can't believe what a small world it is! You're going to love it! 😉
Oh, BTW this is the person you know from San Francisco!

I am currently planning to only take the COMLEX, but I am entering the military where COMLEX and USMLE are given equal weight with regards to residency spots.as per nascardoc's suggestion, ive decided to ask my fellow 2012ers whether they are gonna take both COMLEX and USLME or chose one. Also, what fields are you interested in going into DCOM?

As an osteopathic student, COMLEX I/II (both parts)/III are mandatory in order to successfully be licensed as a physician. I will (and would) also take the USMLE Step I in order to have the opportunity to apply to more residencies. Don't sell yourself short.
ya..but if you get mached allopathically (is that a word?)...your osteopathic residency chances are gone...any truth to this?
Thanks for the clarificationIts actually reversed....the osteopathic match is first, then the allopathic. Thus, if you match into an osteopathic residency, you are automatically taken out of the allopathic match and you can not go into an allopathic residency. And you can't back out of your osteopathic match to try to get an allopathic match. Once you match....you match.
As for myself, I am not 100% sure if I am going to take both, although I probably will. I am thinking about getting into EM or surgery right now, but I'm sure those ideas may change over time. I am really hoping that I find something during rotations that solidifies my mind in what I want to do.
what happens if you don't get in the allopathic program you are shooting for then? wait till next year? that would kinda suck
Totally random change of topic....😛
PLEASE CHECK YOURSELF FOR TICKS!!! This is for everyone in the DCOM area (and everywhere else). It is tick season again. I just pulled a Lone Star tick out of my hairline on the back of my neck where it was attached. My son came home yesterday and reported that one of his classmates had a tick on them. Our dog was really sick last summer from a tick borne illness. You don't have to be in dense woods to become exposed. I don't think people realize the potential risks of tick exposure. Granted, I am a bit of a fanatic, but rightly so...🙄
If I can stay away from the ticks and not end up dead from Rocky Moutain Spotted Fever or something like that, I will see y'all in August. And now back to your regular DCOM thread....😉😀![]()
I swear, you must have "the sweet blood" the way you attract ticks. 🙂
For those of you that have no idea what I'm talking about, wait 'til you move to TN. I'd never heard the term before.
We have been planning to get together at Calhoun's at Bearden Hill (Knoxville) for some time now. Hopefully we'll get around to that. Keep an eye on this board and also the LMU-DCOM board so that you don't miss when we actually get it going.Just wanted to drop in again to say hey to everyone.
Anyone in the class of 2012 want to meet up some weekend?
I live in the Chattanooga area (about 3 hours south of harrogate). Could meet in knoxville, or harrogate to hang out.
I think I have a house lined up to rent for the next couple of years. It should be a good place to have bbq's. Its in middlesboro so it should be a central place for everyone to meet. best part is it has a nice back yard, with a patio out back, and a grill.
Hopefully everyone will come over before classes start to get to know each other!!
so, whats the deal with USLME step I, II and IIIs? We don't have to take the other steps? That'll be mad tite cause I'd rather just take step I USLME and the rest of the COMLEX.
Has anyone else been able to find a book list online yet? Dr. Leo said he was posting one on May 1st but I can only find last year's list.
Also, is anyone living in the Ball Realty Apts that are being built right now?
I'm moving into an apartment building down the hill from the DCOM student housing (it's a yellow house with a tin roof). Me and a few other SDN'ers are moving in there so that should be fun. I checked out the Ball apartments a while back and they look really nice too. You'll have to invite us over! 🙂
At a glance, I'd get the BRS Biochem book on its own (it's a condensed version of Marks), and then get the Cell Bio and Histo from BRS instead of getting the BRS recommended.
Mark's is a good book, but the BRS covers it pretty well.
Definitely need the biostats book.
Others are debateable, but that list has changed quite a bit from ours.
I want to highly encourage you guys to use this thread for questions like this, especially now that apps are up for 2013. It will help you guys get the info you need as well as give the 2013ers something to help them (a more focused pre-osteo thread). I'm not trying to be an A-hole, just wanting to get things more organized for both you guys and the newbies.
I know I am guilty of it too, but I am really going to try to answer these types of questions in this thread from now on.
So here I go.....(yes, I copied from the pre-osteo forum....hey, its a start 😀)
I agree.....the BRS books are really good. I know I've said this before, but I will again, the review biochem book I recommend the most is Lippincott's Illustrated Reviews: Biochemistry . It is AWESOME. It also covers some cell bio, genetics, etc. I can't recommend this book more highly....it is that good. I used it in conjunction with the BRS biochem book, which is good, but I preferred the other.
I would definitely get the anatomy book......Bates.....at least one of the OPP books b/c you won't remember everything and its nice to have a reference when treating family, etc.......biostats
As for the other texts...like MJB said, those are more for an individual basis....altho the biochem text is good. Not sure on the dissector since we did not have one.
I 2nd the embryo book.....I didn't like it much either.
Are you talking about the new apts right by DCOM ? I put down a deposit as well, but was told by Ball they would be ready by July. Were you told something different? I'm curious/worried now, I may need a couch to sleep on too!
Books books books...here is what I would recommend, some of these have been said already.
MFM - Lippincott Biochem (excellent text). High Yield Embryology (superb, concise)
Anatomy - Netter, Gross anatomy by Chang (BRS - it is FANTASTIC). I would almost recommend Color Atlas of Anatomy by Rohen...but nah. just spend time in the lab, its a fun place to be.
FMHC - buy the biostats book, he pulls a few questions out of it
EPC - Bates (necessary evil)
Everything - First Aid for the USMLE (blah blah blah DO's COMLEX - just buy this book before any other, it is the best for a reason)
I think that set should see you through pretty well. 99% of material is covered in lecture anyway, so you dont spend a ton of time doing outside reading. dont waste your money on a lot of these books, anyway, buy them on amazon if you must.
That should do it...hope everyone is enjoying their summer, see you all in august
Is the netters on the book list the same thing we get if we join SOMA?
