LMU-DCOM Class of 2012!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Is the netters on the book list the same thing we get if we join SOMA?

Actually, the book is different from the book you get thru SOMA. The book on the booklist is Gray's Anatomy for Students, in which Netter happens to be an author or artist, but it contains text and pictures. The book thru SOMA is the anatomy atlas by Netter, which is nothing but drawings and you will use heavily in the anatomy lab. So make sure to get BOTH.

Thanks nascardoc. 😀 Your advice, as always, is greatly appreciated.

Would someone mind posting the names of utility companies that service Cumberland Gap (water, garbage, electricity and cable)? Thanks.

A recent email said that on the Friday after orientation, some sort of event was being planned for us..I was just wondering if this event was for the students only, or if significant others will be invited as well?

Last year for us they had a bbq on campus in Democrat Hollow and it was a student, spouse, family that is in town type of thing. You all will probably have the same thing. It's only a few hours and lots of fun to go to...especially after your first anatomy lecture!

hey, i didn't get any email from LMU. I hope they didn't forget about me!

Greetings Class of 2012. The Oncology Club has formed the LMU- DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine team for the 2008 Claiborne County Relay for Life. Relay For Life®, the American Cancer Society's signature event, is a fun-filled overnight experience designed to bring together those who have been touched by cancer. This event is a celebration of those who have won and a remembrance for those who have lost their fight against cancer. In addition to the actual relay, there are sites set up for each team where we sell stuff to make money for ACS and have games and things for the kids. Because it’s so early in the semester, it’s a great way to get to know your class as well as ours and make a difference in the community.
The overall theme of this year's relay is "Celebrate, Remember, Fight Back." The LMU-DCOM’s theme is the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and our slogan is "Fight Cancer, Give it Shell." We'll need people to walk, sell stuff, run games, and generally sit around having an awesome time.

You do NOT have to be a member of the Oncology Club to be a team member or to even participate in the night events. Joining the team costs only $10.00 and includes a t-shirt. How to register can be found on the attached document. However, if you do not want to join the team but are still interested in participating in the night’s events (such as partaking in an hour shift of walking) please contact Amanda Vanlandingham ([email protected]) and give her your contact information (Name, phone number, summer address, and home address).

If you have any other general questions or suggestions, email Vicki Sharp at [email protected]

It’s time to prepare for Relay for Life again!
Our LMU-DCOM team theme is:
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles – “Fight cancer – give it shell!”
(yea, it’s a throw back!)

Here is a list of events that are occurring for us this year:
1) Survivor’s Dinner -- August 7th at Pump Springs Church
- Please let Vicki know if you’re interested so she can RSVP for you! ([email protected])

2) Relay for Life – the walk!
- August 22-23 from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. (we will have one hour shifts for walking)
- Harrogate City Park
- There will be many activities to do:
- Dude looks like a lady – 1 male member of our team will dress
like a woman and collect money for our team for 1 hour on the track
- Luminary ceremony
- “Why do you relay?” – send/give us pictures, stories, or names of
people who have touched your life who have fought cancer – we will have a
poster board commemorating all of them across from our tent to keep us moving! (send pics/stories, etc to [email protected] )
- Spirit Awards – we get points for everything we participate in –
including our tent decorating – and I know how competitive we all are!
- Entertainment – there is entertainment for the entire night – if
you’d like to provide it, let me know, we’d love for any bands, comedians, etc. perform!

Other info you might want to know:
1) Survivor forms & luminary forms (contact: [email protected])
- They can be purchased from any officer of the Oncology Club for the night of the Relay walk – the ceremony is beautiful and moving and really commemorates those who have both won and lost their battle with cancer

2) If you would like to register for Relay for Life and join us on the DCOM team:
- You can register with Amanda Vanlandingham on paper ([email protected])
- Or you can register online:
o Go to: http://relay.acsevents.org/site/TR?fr_id=8379&pg=teamlist
o Scroll down & click on LMU-DeBusk COM and register!
- Joining the team costs $10 and that includes a t-shirt for you!
- Either way, please E-MAIL Amanda IF YOU WANT TO JOIN THE TEAM or just participate in the events.

If you have ANY other questions OR Suggestions, let us know:

THERE WAS A BEAR DOWN AT THE COMMERCIAL BANK IN SPEEDWELL ON HIGHWAY 63!!!! Hope y'all like wildlife! Yikes! :scared:😱

Haha!! I grew up down the road in campbell county. I heard all the time of escaped cows running across the highway leading up to LMU. My uncle actually hit one when I was little.

Oh, poor cow!😳

Well, I am not surprised about any of it. We have been here a year and have had stray donkeys, cows, and horses in our yard and have seen elk, bobcats, foxes, deer, and now a bear. The issue is that it is just two minutes from where we live and I don't really want to wake up and find a bear in my backyard. 😱

I guess it is all just part of country life.🙄

So....my husband was up at ARH in Middlesboro at that Express Care thing, (turns out he has strep)...and he heard some nurses talking about how ARH was closing in the next few years because Pete DeBusk was building a new hospital so DCOM students would have somewhere local to do their residency....😱😕

WHOA! Does anyone know anything about that? That would be incredible to be able to stay right here and do my residency. I love my house and where we live. 😍I hope it is true. WOW!!!👍

that is awesome. i hope a DCOM hospital is built caues that would be money.

I have not heard that rumor at all. Tht would have to be one hell of a hospital if it is going to close ARH, much more than a clinic. I wouldn't be surprised to have Pete DeBusk build something like that, but I wouldn't get too excited yet, not at least until it comes from a better source.

LOL! You mean ER gossip doesn't qualify as a reliable source....🙄😛 Wouldn't that be wonderful though? 😀

Speaking of ER, did anyone watch the season finale last week? OMG!!!! I don't know if I can wait all summer.:scared:

hmmmmmm, do I sense a challenge? its on.....i'll win before we even start med school by faking an injury and seducing someone in the ER. i heard sleep deprivation after a certain period of time is almost equivalent to being drunk in terms of judgement.....time to find some nurses or residents yawning. hhahahaha

Thought you guys might like the schedule for next year....tests are set in stone, everything else can change.

WOW! I'm getting nervous!

OK, let me see if I got this straight . . .

MGA= medical gross anatomy
MFM= molecular fundamentals of medicine
OPP= osteopathic principles and practice
EPC= essentials of patient care
FMHC= foundations of modern healthcare

It's coming up so fast! Only 71 days away! 😱

MGA: Some people's personal hell

OPP: I have to put my hands WHERE, and WTH does T1-T4 NSRRL mean???!
EPC: Sweet, real doctorin' stuff
FMHC: He's got more degrees than a thermometer, LISTEN TO HIM. (and for the love of God, study hard for the test with lots of BioStats questions on it)

Just kidding...sort of. You all should look forward to it.

I see you lucky ducks get a lot of Friday tests...I would have killed for those.

You got it, but you will only speak in acronyms, except for anatomy, which you will call.....get ready.....anatomy. Its nice you have friday exams, but you also have less time to study for them...give and take I guess. I would have liked a few friday tests, but oh well.

And MJB hit the nail on the head with his "analysis." And Dr. Teitelbaum (or T-bomb as we call him) is hilarious.

And if you want to see what ours looks like.....here ya go.....Oh Lord!

Haha. I heard all the time of escaped cows running across the highway leading up to LMU.

Saw one standing next to the road on our way out of Harrogate last weekend. Maybe I can get a job as a cowboy while my wife is in school. I've always wanted to be a cowboy.😎

Did anyone answer this yet? I'm wondering as well since I will definitely need some of this set up before I move up there.

So, these are the utility companies we use for Harrogate and Cumberland Gap? Have you used them to set up utilities yet? If it's not too much trouble, can you post what you paid for connection fees?

Thanks again! 😀

The day after the post about the cows, my husband almost hit a few running across the road. Kind of ironic and quite humorous. 😀

Oh, and it's NOT just idle ER gossip...My husband's boss who lives in Maryville asked him if he heard about the new hospital Pete DeBusk was building. Hmmmmm....how come we haven't heard this yet? The rest of East TN seems to know. 🙄 I WANT DETAILS!!!

I confirmed this with a friend of mine who is friends with Pete's family. It looks like it's going to happen. Obviously, it won't be in time to help us, but it will add to the schools reputation later.

Also, for anyone that's married: I spoke with Dean Leo this afternoon about having my family added to the insurance so that there will be no gap between my current coverage and the coverage that I get through DCOM. He said that during the first day of orientation, someone from the Blue Cross/ Blue Shield would be there and our insurance would be active that evening at midnight.

However, if you have family members you're trying to enroll, it's a good idea to send him an email heads-up that he can forward to the insurance agent in order to avoid any paperworks SNAFUs.

I hope this helps!

Anyone know how the payments work for spouse insurance? Do you pay it all up front or do you pay monthly?

I believe it gets taken out up front for each semester. I have never had to pay anything monthly.

As far as insurance goes, I would add this...

If you plan to use insurance OTHER than the school's policy, get your paperwork in order. It's kind of a pain to get a hard waiver.

SO, IF YOU ARE NOT GOING TO USE THE SCHOOL's INSURANCE, I would be working this summer with the school to find out what you need to have with you to get the hard waiver.

We just went through this process again. Sheila Brill is awesome, but sometimes coming up with the paperwork is not.

So I saw someone mention on the facebook group that we should buy scrubs, stethoscrop, and BP cuff online because it's cheaper. Does this mean we shouldn't get the package thing at the bookstore? I would ask on facebook but that is blocked from work. Just trying to figure out what kind of stuff I need to start buying. It would be super helpful to get a list going maybe I will work on that while at work hehe.

Thanks again! 😀

With Arthur-Shawanee Utility District, we are paying $17/month for water with a $40 connection fee for up to 2000 gallons. With Powell Valley Electric, we are paying $120/month with a deposit of twice the average monthly rent (unless you get a letter of credit from your previous utility provider showing no late payments for the last 12 months AND your application has to be notarized unless you can go there in person) for our house on Forge Ridge Road in Harrogate.

I don't know if these are the same utility companies as Cumberland Gap (depending on where exactly your house is), but if you search them online, their websites should show the areas they serve.

If you need to buy all the "doctor tools" then I would recommend getting them in the bookstore b/c I never saw any prices that collectively beat the total price in the bookstore. It is a pretty good deal. I personally like the steth in the kit. Some people don't like it, and some of those people don't like it just b/c it is not a Littman. But if you do searches, you will see that many people speak highly of it. The only thing is the length.....the welch/allyn is 25-inches and the littman is 27-inches.

As for scrubs, I would hold off on those b/c I do remember Dr. Cross talking about wanting the 2012ers to have te same scrubs, so I would wait a bit on scrubs until someone figures out the logistics.

Yay that was super helpful. I'm glad my place has well water so is one last bill assuming it all works fine. Do you know anything about trash pick up yet? I've never had to worry about that kind of thing. Also is there cable tv and internet in the area?

I posted a bit about this in the other LMU DCOM forum it's on page 69 post #3441 or you can just look at my previuos posts it should only be a few down. As far as scrubs go I'd follow ND and wait, plus some of the clubs are doing scrub sales...maybe so you'll have lots of opportunity to get those here. Also get some nitrile gloves for anatomy lab (yes I'm wincing at bringing up this dreaded topic again:scared:) They are hard to get here and you will need them (not latex only nitrile).

SWEET!!! 😀 Do you have any idea on a time frame?

I just wanted to let everyone know that my Verizon cell phone has miraculously started working in Middlesboro. Don't know how, when, or why, but one day it just rang in Middlesboro and has been working ever since.

Also, I am STILL looking for an in-home nanny if anyone is interested. 🙁

What happened to Thanksgiving Break?

I'm guessing its to spread the schedules out a bit, which you guys will be happy with. It does suck not having the whole week off, but we do have that Wednesday afternoon free, so that will allow travel time there. I somehow believe that wednesday may be very.....uh....sparce 😀

Yes, Verizon added a tower in Middlesboro, so you can get digital service there now.

And tomorrow is our last exam for first year.....thank God!!!!!!!!!!!! It has been a wonderful, yet tiring year. We all need very well deserved breaks. I am looking forward to next semester as it is going to be very interesting, yet demanding. We have some tough systems ahead, but they will be fun too.

And in case anyone wasn't sure, you DO NOT need to be certified in CPR prior to matriculation, so take advantage of the clubs at school. They all offer some great courses, seminars, etc, so utilize them whenever you can and support your school's clubs. For any of you who are not CPR certified by the American Heart Association (and yes, you need to be certified thru them, not Red Cross) or need to be renewed, don't fret b/c the Emergency Medicine Club will be offering numerous classes thruout the year. The first couple of classes will be for OMS-II's only since we all need to be certified before starting ACLS in October, but after that, it will be open to everybody.

Yeah I remember the nitrile gloves post. I was just wondering since I read something different on the facebook group than what I had been hearing on here. Anyways I'm stealing some gloves from work before I leave so I don't have to worry about finding any. And I'm not going to start a discussion on the pros and cons of nitrile vs. latex hehe

Thanks so much! 😀

No problem 🙂

I'm thinking this is another service that depends on where you are living exactly, but for our house, we have to take our trash to a dump about a mile up the road.

My husband really knows more about this stuff than I do since he's the one who signed up for it all, but I can tell you that we are going with DirecTV and then DSL for internet through AT&T. I want to say that cable wasn't available at our house or we DEFinitely would have chosen that. I know we also had the option of Dish Network for TV.

And tomorrow is our last exam for first year.....thank God!!!!!!!!!!!!

Congratulations and good luck! :luck:

I'm a little nervous about Friday exams myself. I'm used to spending the weekends studying :scared:

Eww taking trash to the dump does not sound like fun at all. And I was assuming there probably wouldn't be cable in the area but I was going to try lol. I guess I'm going to start looking all the companies up so I can get almost everything connected before I get there. What would I do without the internet?

They opened up some days off a few weeks earlier so that students could go to the SOMA/AOA Convention in Las Vegas... I'll be going, fo sho.

Thats right....I forgot about that....duh!!!

And yes, most of you who live in Harrogate, and maybe surrounding cities, will have to take your garbage to the dump yourself. Its not a big deal really. They have, what I call "Dumpster Depots" that have about 30 dumpsters and you just throw your trash in them. It open monday thru saturday from 7am to 7pm and the closest one is about 5 min from DCOM.

I hope those students living in the student apartments would not have to do this?

I never thought I'd take such a basic service as garbage pick up forgranted 😀
