LMU-DCOM Class of 2012!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Important questions I'm sure have already been covered 100 times, in reverse priority:

1. Who is the cable provider for Harrogate.
2. Where is the closest place to buy a bottle of whiskey.

Communicomm Cable 800-813-6230. TV and Internet.

hey guys, im a bind. i passed all my sciences classes this past semester, but got a D+ and F in two humanities (Logic and Epistemology). The humanities do not count towards my major, as I am a biochemistry major. The class I got an F in is from a douchebag professor that thinks philosophy is a subject harder than anything in the world. What should I do? In my acceptance to DCOM it said my acceptance is contingent upon my successful completion of my undergraduate program. I did finish my biochemistry degree. I am worried they'll rescind my acceptance. What should I do?

You really should contact DCOM and find out first hand. I think you would be fine though as long as you completed your degree. Good luck!

your contract specifically states that your acceptance is contingent upon successful completion?

I can't find that anywhere in my contract...are these acceptance contracts personalized?

anyhow. I would still think you succesfully completed your undergraduate program since you earned your degree...I think you'll be fine 🙂

Woohoo!:soexcited: You made it! :hardy: I can't wait to start 🙂

Thank you! I was definitely relieved to see it in writing. You will enjoy medical school, but I must say, take it easy and enjoy/relax this summer -- it will be full force ahead for you guys. The 1st year wasn't too easy, and I have a feeling this 2nd year will be even tougher. I'm definitely enjoying this summer! 👍

I will address your PM in a bit tonite.

I passed Psychiatry! I am now officially a year 2! 👍

Congrats! That must of been a great relief..

so what are you guys going to do this summer? This will probably be your last long-term break ever 😱

I'm trying to figure out what kind of phone to get. I'm guessing I can get ATT or Verizon and be ok. Who has better deals or better phones? I'm thinking about getting a "fancier" phone like blackberryish. I'm up for all suggestions. Thanks!

If money wasn't a concern, I would get verizon since they just put up that new tower...however, verizon tends to be the most expensive wireless carrier

ATT is not that bad in deals...and it seems most students at DCOM prefer ATT

I have sprint and will most likely stick with it since they are releasing the AIRAVE in late June of this year...so service back at the unversity student apartments won't be an issue...I don't mind being in roaming while on campus since it is free with sprint

I would definitely suggest a smartphone in med school, perhaps, not the blackberry since that is more for corporate users. It will come in handy for calender dates and reminders if you're into electronic organization....I can't think of the last time I scribbled something on a paper calender

If I was out of contract , I would go with ATT and Iphone...I'm sure the built in ipod will be a life saver while studying

Well money is somewhat of a concern so maybe I won't worry about verizon. I really do want a smartphone there are just sooo many options. I'm really indecisive and I don't want to get stuck with something I think is good and then get to school and see something way more awesome that I could have got. Yeah I like to overthink things. The iPhone looks really cool.

Last I knew, the Curve was still 99 bucks through AT&T. It seems to be pretty good thus far. I would have loved having the iPhone, but I already have an iPod or 2, and didn't really see the point of spending 400 bucks for a silly cell phone. 🙂

Yeah it kind of sucks that I got an Ipod for xmas and now I'm thinking about getting an iphone. I'm not sure what I will get. The ATT tilt looks kinda cool too.

then just get the iphone....there is no better phone! 😀

personally, I need a QWERTY keyboard with actual buttons

I would play around with both touch screen smartphones and hard button smartphones in store and see what you'd prefer for long term.

If you're iPhone shopping, I'd wait another 2 weeks or so. There have been rumors that the 3G iPhone will subsidized

AT&T plans to subsidize as much as $200 of the price of the 3G iPhone, according to a Fortune report. Citing a person “familiar with the strategy,” the report states that the subsidy would bring the price of the base-model 3G iPhone to $199 for customers who sign two-year contracts, a price that would help AT&T lure more customers away from rival carriers Verizon, T-Mobile, and Sprint. Subsidized iPhones will reportedly be available only through AT&T and not at Apple Stores, and may feature more robust locking techniques in hopes of preventing customers from using the cheaper phones with other services or carriers. The report goes on to say that Apple will cease shipments of the current-generation iPhone roughly two weeks before the 3G iPhone’s likely June 27 debut, and that the new model will be 2.5mm thinner than the original, and will sport true GPS capabilities, as well.

Well now...THIS got my attention. 🙂

My only complaint is how slow the Blackberry is...I wonder if 3G is really that much faster.

I have the Blackjack thru AT&T and I love it. They have the 2nd generation out now, which a fellow student has and it looks real good. I would recommend that if you go with AT&T.

Congrats! That must of been a great relief..

so what are you guys going to do this summer? This will probably be your last long-term break ever 😱

Thanks! I'm doing clinical research, exercising to get back in shape, and then just chillin ... you should just do the chillin part -- tough sailing ahead.

Yeah it kind of sucks that I got an Ipod for xmas and now I'm thinking about getting an iphone. I'm not sure what I will get. The ATT tilt looks kinda cool too.
I have the ATT Tilt. So far I have been pretty pleased with it (even though in the past I have always hated windows mobile). I love the qwerty slide out keyboard and the tons of free applications I can get for it. I highly recommend it (it also has 3G and wifi).

Also happy with my Tilt. Get the Garmin GPS software. Well worth the ~$100. Especially when moving to a new area.

(or course, if the new area only has one street, it's pretty easy to find everything)

Ok so I'll wait till the new iPhone comes out and then I'll go look at all of my options with ATT. Looks like I check out the Tilt, BlackJack, and iPhone. Options make it really hard for me! But I do love shopping so it'll be fun.

I'll stick to my El Cheapo Phono from Motorola (Ooo la la) that was free and actually paid for my 1st month's cell phone plan.

hey guys, my prof screwed up and i ended up with a D in that class instead of an F. Do you think I should contact DCOM and tell them I got two Ds or should I just send my transcript? I mean, I did graduate with my BS Biochem degree. I heard as long as you have all Cs its smooth sailing, haven't heard of Ds though. I hate philosophy, wtf was i thinking

so, I have the double room....the pictures on the website are kinda crappy and I don't remember how big it was when we got the tour. Is there enough room for a sofa and etc?

I believe you should be fine. Again, a phone call just to make sure would be ideal, but I think it is only pre-req and degree related classes you have to have a C or higher in. Ds in other classes shouldn't hurt you. I'd double check it though.

yeah bro, you'll be totally fine. those are friggen phil classes, predicate logic blows. lol and epistemology is equivalent to intellectual masterbation. Seriously, that whole multi-verse theory is crap....its funny, when I read anything by Kripke or Armstrong, I kinda remember asking myself those questions as a child. I'd have to say, in terms of epistemology, Nozick and other tracking theorists have the best explanation even though I think epistemology is a bunch of crap. i like more socio-political phil and theodicy, as they are relevant to life.

from what i remember, you would be able to fit a sofa in. they fit queen beds in so i have to imagine a pull out would even be able to fit.

On the phone subject, most medical software is made for either palm or windowsmobile. So do a little research in medical softare you may want to load such as PDR and Merck which only have offerings for the two platforms.

The iPhone is a cool gadget and all, but the Tilt/Verizon xv6800 can do the same things and more.

There's rumors of the school providing PDAs; however, it's just rumors, so who knows.

continuing on pda medical software....check out www.skyscape.com they have awesome looking med programs

I heard this as well, so I asked Jason if he had heard anything about it; as of a couple months ago, he had not. Either way, I could always use another PDA.

Does not surprise me. Watch, we will learn about us getting PDAs about a few weeks before Spring of MS-II ends, and then they'll expect us to know how to use it by the time rotations start. Just fine for seasoned users of PDAs, not so great for the unseasoned.

Does anyone know if the student apartments are filled up or will be filled anytime soon? I had an deal for an apartment but just found out that it's not going to work, so I'm kinda stuck, and with everyone getting room assignments I'm hoping I'm not too late.

No, its not full. Just call the school and let them know you want to live there. Its not too late.

Nascar's right (what a genius!) -- it is far from being full. Let them know you want to live there.

Another random change of subject from DoctorMom....:hijacked:

I found some great in-home child care. YAY!!!!:soexcited: I ran an ad in the paper and got a great response to it. (I actually had several people who called who either didn't leave a number or I couldn't understand the number, so if I didn't call you back and you called...my apologies.😳) I interviewed several people and there were several really wonderful locals who were very interested. So, I think I am all set for that. Thank you to everyone who responded from SDN. Thank you also to Dr. Leo for asking around at DCOM for me. :biglove: Everything is looking good and I am anxious to come back to school.

For you guys with the Tilts, have you had any problems out of the hinge? When I tilt mine up, its like there is no friction holding it up at all. It stayed up for like a week after I got it. I'm wondering if this is common or if my phone should be sent in for replacement. I can imagine its a pretty complicated hinge to slide out and then up.

Sounds like replacement time...I don't have that problem...funny thing is, I hardly even us the tilt feature

tilt 😕

No problem, but I don't "tilt" mine very often.

They are talking about the ATT Tilt. It's a phone 🙂
It's probably one of the best phones on the market...but it only gets good when you remove the crappy ATT ROM (which is insanely slow and does really annoying things) and replace it with a "cooked ROM" which adds tons of speed, battery life, and programs. Many people think it is much better than the iPhone because it is way more customizable and has a physical keyboard
