Hey All,

I have a lead on a house in Middlesboro that will be available in a month or so. It is a 3 br 1 ba house that may be about 1000 sqft (don't hold me to that I haven't actually been there). It is for rent by my landlady (also a few other's on here landlady as well...hi guys!!!) these places are usually no frills but they are clean and not too expensive. She also told me she was putting new carpet in when the current renter moves out. She said it would go for a little more than mine ($500) but these people are notoriously low on rent. Anyway PM me for her number if you are interested. I forgot to add she is for sure not willing to take pets in this particular house so if you are bringing your furry friend I wouldn't waste my time. Bummer I know I love my animals. She is not this way about all her places so maybe call her and give her your number in case she has another opening...she owns like 35 properties in Middlesboro I think. Anyhoo.....

Roger Ball still has a few 2 bedroom/2 baths right around the corner from DCOM left. They are brand new, some not even finished yet, but will be by July. Myself and my SO just got a place there, they are really nice, and cost $650/mo. Mostly DCOM students live there, so it will be a nice little community! PM me if you would like more info.

I thought there was a wait list for those? No?
 
I was told there was a waitlist too, and I was put on it a few months back. But then when I met with him he acted as if there were still some left...not sure how to interpret that, but its worth a shot. Seems as though if you are willing to put down a deposit, then the place is yours? He is also building some one bedrooms, although they wont be ready by the beginning of the school year, but maybe halfway through.
 
I don't think so, I called on those when I was in town and he said there was a waiting list 3x longer than he could accommodate before classes started. 🙁 I joked with my mom and told her I was going to forget about medicine and get a business loan to build an apartment complex from the med school. 2 and 3 bedroom units, lol, they would probably have a waiting listed before construction started!
 
Hey guys just thought I would drop in and say hey to everyone!

I'll be one of your classmates next year!!

We should all try and get together sometime before school starts, to get to know everyone. I know I've got a house lined up to rent in middlesboro, it should be a great place to have a bbq (it has back yard, and patio with a bbq grill). Colse to campus! Hopefully I can have everyone over before school starts!

Oh yea, I forgot to ask, does anyone on here ride a motorcycle? I'll be bringing mine and am hoping to find someone to ride around with..

There are several guys with motorcycles in 2011... You shouldn't have any problems getting people to go with you. There are great places to ride and lots of interesting things to see around here.

On another cycling note (minus the engine), we've started going on group bike rides now that the weather is nice heading out from Harrogate Park after class. There is also a cycling club in Mboro that rides out at 5:30 and at 6:00 on Mondays as well which many of us are planning on attending.. So if you've got a bike, bring it!

So I gave DCOM a call today and spoke to financial aide. For all of us that are complete (FAFSA submitted), they'll send our packets out on the 21st assuming the preferred lender list is ready. I am so siked to take out 40-50k a year! ballin. 😎

Yep....its an awesome feeling that you went $52k into debt for one year of school. There's nothing like knowing you'll have a 2nd mortgage for student loans. $220k debt, here I come!!!

Yup, we are waiting for the preferred lender list for the year as well before we sign our promissory notes... Woo hoo money. Boo hoo paying it back someday.
 
I was just looking up food coops near Harrogate, and noticed that knoxville has the Three Rivers Market, has anyone been there? Is it worthwhile?
 
Well...just got an email with UPDATES

Dear Students,

I am just writing you a short note to let you know about several items related to next year.

IMMUNIZATIONS:
Please do your best to complete the immunization forms before school starts. Once school starts it is the last thing in the world that you are going to want to deal with. Keep in mind that the immunization policy is driven by the hospitals where you will be working at. If you are not up-to-date on your immunizations you could be prohibited from certain clinical activities.

VARIOUS FORMS:
There are lots of forms to sign but don’t feel that you have to wait until everything is complete before sending us anything. You can send in the forms as you complete them.

ORIENTATION
Orientation starts on July 30th. The current first year students are already planning an event for you on Friday night August 1 st so keep that night open.

UNIVERSITY INN (Med school Housing)
At the apartments we are in the process of adding an exercise room, a lounge, sand volleyball court, and an outdoor picnic area with fire pits and grills. The rent will be $550.00/mth for the one room units and $700.00/mth for the two room units. Please keep in mind that the leases are for 12 months and start on July 1st.

BOOK LIST
The book list will be posted on the web site by May 1st.

FINANCIAL AID FORMS (From Pat Peace)
We are still waiting for our Recommended Lender List to be delivered and posted on the DCOM financial aid website. We are hoping to have it in place by the end of next week and begin mailing award letters on Monday, April 21. If you have not yet filed your 08-09 FAFSA, you should do so immediately.

Before you receive your financial aid award letter, there are a few things that I would like to point out:

1.When you look at the Recommended Lender List you will notice that, due to economic conditions, the lenders are offering few, if any, borrower benefits.

2.After you review your award letter, if you are going to be using the same lender as this year, you do not have to reapply for your loan or esign an MPN. Simply sign the letter and return it to my office. I will certify your loan for the amount awarded; or, if you have indicated on your letter that you wish to borrow less, it will be certified for the smaller amount. If, however, you decide to change lenders, you must apply through the new lender and sign a new MPN.

3.The amount on your award letter is what you are eligible to borrow. If you can do with less you should not borrow the maximum amount. You have now been in medical school for over eight months. You should sit back and reflect on where you spent your money. Ask yourself questions like, “Did I really need to purchase that pair of shoes? Could I have spent less on food or entertainment?” If you can tighten your budget next year, my advice would be to do so.

Think about it this way: “You can live as a student now, or live as a student later”.

WHITE COAT
The White Coat Ceremony will be on Saturday October 18th. If you are expecting family members to come and they need lodging please make reservations as soon as possible. I would start with the hotels in Middlesboro and once they fill up I would try for Morristown, Tazewell, or Corbin KY.

We are all looking forward to the start of the second year. If you have any questions do not hesitate to call me.

Just to add to this list...There is a Hampton Inn in Caryville (Jacksboro).

The white coat ceremony is on my wedding anniversary. It must be fate!😀

Tell me about it, I really wish I had insurance right about now! I went to get everything done today and wouldn't you know it, I fainted after they took my blood! I fell completely off of the chair and onto the floor, it was like an out of body experiance because I saw myself falling but couldnlt do anything about it and woke up with like 10 people standing over me. This has never happened before! Im kinda sick right now with a cold so I guess maybe that had something to do with it 😕 Crazy experiance!
 
I'm really not looking foward to paying for all the blood tests and stuff, but hey, its just a drop in the bucket compared to all the debt i'll have a guess!!

I was pumped to get an email from them today with all that info on it.
 
Yay I finally did my FAFSA! And I'm trying very hard to get all the physical stuff done but they didn't keep up with all my titers. I supposedely had it all done but now they can't find my chicken pox one. Hopefully I can get it all worked out without having to make another appointment. Does anyone worry that they are going to forget something and be kicked out? I have some anxiety issues I think.

Oh yeah and I'm married now. I got my name changed today but I couldn't put it on my FAFSA because my PIN was tied to my maiden name. I somehow think this will be a problem but I'm not exactly sure how to fix it yet. I thougt it would be better just to get the thing done.
 
Anyone who was on the waitlist last year I have a question for you, Did any of you write a Letter of Intent?

Don't worry Malisa, I get paranoid some times also. I think it's normal to feel that way a little bit until we are actually there and all settled.

When I got the email from Dr. Leo today, a tiny part of me thought it was going to say that I had been mistakenly accepted. 😳

You'll get it all done and everything will work out, don't worry! 😀

Thanks! Yeah I'm sure I'll get it all done and I guess the stressing helps to make sure I don't forget anything. I can't wait to get up there and settled. Also I can't wait for the get togethers everyone has been talking about.

I haven't posted in a while, but I wanted to say hello to everyone and deliver my good news. I was accepted back in December and my wife and I have been house searching since. We had an offer accepted on Thursday! Its in New Tazewell, so I am looking at a 15-20 minute drive. Can't complain though because we absolutely love the house. Also of note, I graduate May 2nd. 😀 And maybe my greatest news, my first child (boy) will enter this world in only a few more weeks! 😀😀😀😀😀 Things are great right now and I can't wait to begin classes and meet everyone.

P.S. I thought I would stir up a little dust... I have read multiple posts about the cost of vaccinations/lab work. I am a lab tech, so the hospital wrote off my $450 lab bill.:meanie:

I randomly hop onto the DCOM threads every few months and post things about ticks and soup beans or whatever...🙄 😛 But, I realized that I don't know a lot of the people on these threads now and thought it was time that I officially introduced myself.

I am a member of the class of 2012. I was in last year's class and had to take a medical leave of absence, but I am coming back and giving it another shot. I have children, a husband, a beautiful home in Speedwell, and MANY animals. (I am particularly obsessed with horses.😀) I am also DCOM's #1 fan and love the school and all the people. I am sure y'all will too. I am really looking forward to meeting everyone and starting back at DCOM. So anyway...:hello:

My house is going to be exactly the way I want it this summer, so maybe I can actually have that BBQ this year. LOL!😀
 
I know a lot of students are anxious to get here, and I remember the now unthinkable urge to buy my books early so this evening I put together a list of books I would recommend people to read prior to coming up here. It's obviously completely optional, and in no way will help you on any exam ever, but the books are great and ones I have personally read. I feel as though they have helped give me a better outlook on our chosen profession! Good luck and enjoy your summer.

I have not posted on this thing in a while so I just wanted to tell everyone hello! I am coming to DCOM from California😀 I am soooooo excited!!! Anyone else from CA going?

I can't believe how fast time is going by right now....I was accepted in October and I remember thinking how far away July was...ONLY 3 MORE MONTHS!!! :hardy::hardy::hardy::hardy:

Ok here's the deal for my class this summer will be one heck of a time and we been waiting for a long time..so plz don't remind us how quickly fall will begin again! You will know what i mean when you are in my shoes next year..so put off any anticipation to school until we have enjoyed our summers..will ya? thanx hun

I hope so too!! lol.....I am about 15 minutes from Sacramento...So we are all coming from with in a few hours of eachother. Are you driving to TN?
