LMU-DCOM (DeBusk COM) Discussion thread Part 2 2007-2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I came down to look at several apartments this weekend near DCOM...and now I'm having a problem making a decision so I wanted to get some input from everyone else....

I've been to the area many times because I have family nearby so I know how hard it is to find a nice place to rent...so I wanted to start looking early. Out of 7 places today, only 2 or 3 were even reasonable...the only problem is that I would have to start paying rent now(Feb.), even though I can't actually move until around June/July.....but at the same time I don't want to wait until spring or summer and risk all the housing being taken up when another influx of 160 students come in.....what should I do? Do I go ahead and cough up the money to secure a nice place close to DCOM or should I risk it and wait till closer???????

Welcome to all the lurkers who have joined the party 😉. I see we have someone else from Tennessee, there are surprisingly less native Tennesseans actively posting than I figured there would be.

Steph, that is a really tough decision that I doubt anyone on here will be able to help you too much with. It's definitely a question on how much risk you're willing to take. I wouldn't think you would need to start renting right now, but like you said, you don't want to wait too much or you'll be fighting with all of us 🙂 for the best spots. Timing "is of the essence"

Yep I'm sending my deposit this week. It really sucks that I've ended up paying two depoists but I'm sure it is well worth it. My fiance is the best guy ever for giving me the money. I think it's a good investment in our future. Everyone sounds so awesome I can't wait to meet everyone.

Unfortunately in a fit of rage (from being waitlisted originally) I threw away all the materials about DCOM I got from the interview. Eh I know it was dumb but from everything I read I didn't think there was any hope for getting off the waitlist until May and I had gotten another acceptance. Anyways I hope we get all the information again in the matriculation packet and what not.

Yeah so I'm kinda just rambling along but I figure everyone else is talking about stuff I wanted to get in on the action.

I'm kinda worried about looking for a place to live. We have two dogs and even here in birmingham its hard to find places to rent that allow pets (especially dogs that weigh over 25 pounds). What is the best way for going about looking for houses or apartments to rent? Oh yeah and what cell phone company does everyone there use? I noticed that my Tmobile phone was roaming when I went to the interview.

I don't think you need to pay rent for 6 months before school starts! I doubt the DCOM apts will be filled up so if you can't find anything by Aug you can always move in there.

I know exactly how you feel. I started paying rent in April to hold my place at the apartment where I live now. I went ahead and moved up here in May. I had a cat that I couldn't take with me to the apartments. Its really your call.. but different places come open all of the time so you might be ok if you decided to search again a couple of months from now.

Oh yeah and what cell phone company does everyone there use? I noticed that my Tmobile phone was roaming when I went to the interview.
AT&T seems to be the best service around the area. I had no problems with service at the interview, driving through Maynardville, or driving through La Follette. I think T-Mobile would work just fine because it is GSM (uses a sim card) like AT&T, but like you said, you will always be roaming on AT&T towers. The biggest problem is probably that there is no T-Mobile store anywhere nearby (actually I'm not certain about the Kentucky side). The closest would probably be Nashville, and trust me, you don't want to drive all the way there for a cell phone problem!

If you are looking for a place to rent I would check the Middlesboro Daily News classified section and I know the school has a folder of rentals available as well. I put an ad in the paper and had several responses which is something you might consider since you have two dogs. I know I ran into lots of people who were reluctant to rent to me with my cat, but I know people here who have large dogs and were able to find a rental. It just might take some time so start now. About cell service our class went through the same discussion before classes started and I believe the consensus was AT&T/Cingular was the best service in the area. I do know Verizon doesn't work in Middlesboro at all but it does work in Harrogate.

I'm interviewing on the 22nd too... I posted that a while ago, but I don't think anyone saw it. Looking forward to meeting you both!

Hey all! This is my first post but I'm a loyal follower and am incredibly impressed with the way everyone feels about DCOM. I'm interviewing on the 22nd (and pretty anxious!) and was wondering who else is going to be there! I look forward to meeting some of you at Oasis- I'll be the one there with my mom 🙂

Good luck to everyone! This is my first piece of positive feedback (although it occurred rather awkwardly) and I'm excited to experience DCOM first hand.

Congrats on your interview, I will be one of the students at Oasis the night before your interview. I'll be the only female there that night (remember the 2:1 ratio ). I hope you all can make it, I look forward to meeting you. BTW for those of you wondering the Oasis night is casual so dress comfortable it's suppose to be fun!

Thanks for the input everyone....I have a cat also, plus a lot of furniture so the student apts aren't really an option...and out of all the places I looked at only 1 allowed a cat, and even they were hesitant...so I may just have to hold on to it...5 months worth of rent is probably a small amount of $ in the grand scheme of things....

Awesome... thanks Shasta! My fiance and I are driving down from Michigan tomorrow morning and we are staying at the Holiday Inn Express. We will definitely be at Oasis tomorrow evening. Be prepared to calm my nerves 😳 Can't wait to meet you!

thanks nascardoc, good boost of confidence to have, job market is terrible.

anyone else interviewing on the 5th?

my sprint service worked up there as well, no problems

I may not be able to look for a place until two week before class starts. If you have that kind of cash, I'd say go for it. Better than stressing out over trying to find a place at the last minute.

the waiting. is. terrible.

nickoicu, where in ks are you from? there's a kansan named mjb you should talk to at your interview. (mitch). he's awesome. and definitely go to the oasis the night before. 😀

Sweet! I will put on my best calm your nerves...prep you for interview...pump you up show. lol:welcome::corny::clap::luck:

Sorry that was over the top! lol I'll see you all tomorrow night, have a safe drive missdochopeful. The Holiday Inn Express is nice and real close to the school you should be real comfortable.

That's good to know! I have Sprint as well and was worried that I would be roaming. I am flying out on Thurs so I should be able to go to the Oasis that night. Who all is going to be there??

Goodluck Halloweenie! I'm sure it'll go well for you *prepares the fireworks* 😀

I see we have someone else from Tennessee, there are surprisingly less native Tennesseans actively posting than I figured there would be.

I have noticed this, too. I think it's because there really isn't a whole lot of osteopathic awareness in Tennessee, particularly for undergrads. I know a lot of people who know very little about it, or even some that know nothing at all. I go to UT Knoxville, and it seems like everyone is so set on MD school, but I really think it's because they don't know otherwise. I'm sure the opening of this school, as well as other southern schools will definitely change that! Thank goodness, right? 👍

Noooo. Guys have to wear collared shirts. Jeans are OK unless they are all ripped and tattered. 😀

oh...colared shirts are fine (i don't mind wearing dress shirts)...does that include polo shirts?

I don't like wearing torn pants, period.

Yes, you can wear cotton collared shirts (like polo's).

I think the dress code is reasonable. We kinda need to get used to dressing somewhat professional because come 3rd and 4th year, we will have to "dress up" for rotations.

I live in Wichita. Is Mitch on the admissions staff or something? I talked with him a bit earlier. He told me to relax and be myself at the interview. I would like to say that it would be very difficult for me to be anything other than myself since I am myself and am still me myself included.
I'll be at oasis. My interview is on the 29th.

LOL, to the you, yourself, and you. 😛

MJB is an awesome guy in our class! ... but in fact, we are all awesome here in the class of 2011!😎

Are you guys at school today, or get the day off? 🙄

I was just *hoping* for a phone call today, but didn't know if there was anyone there. Still too early by all accounts....

What is this Oasis thing I keep hearing about? Keep in mind I interviewed last year so things may have changed this year

Thanks

There is definitely a big lack of osteopathic awareness. I have found probably 2 people that have ever heard of osteopathic medicine, and those two were both from New York/ New Jersey. I think that the awareness will definitely be increasing over the next couple of years though and that there will be great excitement for the influx of new (some locally raised) doctors.

What is your undergrad major at UTK (I would put $5 on biology 😉 )? My wife is a senior in finance. She is graduating in May.

The night before the interview a couple of the DCOM students meet the interested interviewees at the Oasis pizza place to just hang out, help them to relax before the interview, and eat some AWESOME pizza.

Ok...

Dress Code...

It's not very strict at all imo. As long as you look decent, you're not likely to have trouble. Shorts are even ok if that's your choice. Just no T-shirts.

Rotations...do a search of this thread...I'm quite sure your questions will be answered...if they aren't, come on back and we'll fire away.

No classes today, but I think some of the staff is there...not sure.

I somehow missed the fact that we have another Kansan coming for an interview. I'll try to stop and say hi...always good to see someone from back home...

I have a lot of my undergrad books (and MCAT books) collecting dust on a bookshelf.

Ok...back to Immunology. 😕

Wow..that's cool...I wish they had it last year...but the obviously couldn't since there were no DCOM students....:hardy:

If you are ever in the area on a Monday or Thursday, why don't you come by and have pizza with us at the Oasis? Its ok that you already interviewed. Have you seen the school since it was just the framework last year?

You guessed right. I'm a BCMB major (Biochemistry and Cellular & Molecular Biology). It's one of the major divisions of Biology here.

MJB, I don't recall being able to wear shorts...

MJB, I don't recall being able to wear shorts...

Thanksfully, presentable shorts are allowed, but I had to throw out all my cutoff jean shorts.....

From page 51 in the student handbook:

1. Students should not wear clothing that may be provocative or distracting to other
members of the community. Students who come to school dressed
unprofessionally will be asked to leave the campus, change clothes and return in
appropriate attire. Any absence from class or an exam because of the student’s
lack of judgment will be considered an unexcused absence. The dress code is
enforced between the hours of 7:30 am– 4:30 pm on Monday through Friday.

2. While not an exhaustive list, tube tops, tank tops, t-shirts, flip-flops, excessive
body piercing, cutoff shorts, and jeans with holes in them are examples of
inappropriate dress and are considered unacceptable. Scrubs are only allowed in
the anatomy laboratory. When representing DCOM in any type of public forum,
such as a conference or certain on-campus events, the dress code is, at the very
least, business casual. At some public forums a higher standard is expected.
Again, the student must display correct judgment and match the appropriate
clothing with the event.

I met a guy volunteering at UT Medical Center that is BCMB at UT. I think he's a junior. I can't think of his name now, but he was tall, had a british accent, and curly hair.

I only guess you were Biology because every interview I went to I was the only one in the group that was not (I was Computer Science). It's nice to be the oddball though (although I hope the lack of advanced biology classes doesn't come back to bite me).

Hey Halloweenie, this is Seth from our interview day on the 15th. I haven't heard anything yet but I'm waiting patiently 😀. You haven't heard anything have you? Hopefully they're just waiting 'till tomorrow...

Not even a peep. I hope they're still going with the one week notification....I don't think I can handle two! :scared: Or worse, ....the LETTER. 🙁

That's interesting, because I volunteer at UT Medical Center too! This tall guy with a british accent doesn't sound familiar to me, but kinda sounds like someone I'd like to meet. haha

I saw on your MDapp that you've already been accepted to DCOM--congrats! Do you by any chance know how full the class is so far? (Hoping there's still room for me!)

I know how you guys feel, I was checking my cell every 5 mins. The call for us came on Tues morning. Goodluck guys! 👍

I haven't been out to volunteer in a while. I worked in the Trauma ward (Surgical Critical Care) and that is where I met him.

Thanks! I was totally impressed with DCOM and was so excited to be accepted. After I knew I was accepted I turned down my UT-Memphis interview because I knew without a doubt DCOM was where I wanted to be.

I don't know how full the class is. I know that there has to be more accepted than what post here on SDN (there are probably about 10-20 SDNers that have been accepted). I can tell you that because you are from TN, especially the Knox/Nash area, that that will work very strongly in your favor...meaning what they say on their website is not just lip service: they were genuinely excited to have multiple TN people in our interview (we had 4 I believe, two of us were from Knoxville). I believe that you will be fine though, I bet there are still plenty of spots available.

Do you interview tomorrow? Good luck to all of those that do, as well as to those hoping to hear tomorrow!!!!

Thanks for the offer, however, I live in Chicago. I will probably come up once more in 2 mo or so to do a housing search.....yes the school was still in framework still when I interviewed....I was also able to see the completed pics..looks very impressive!

I was a BCMB major at UT also, but I graduated back in the spring of '06. I will also be attending DCOM this August as I was accepted after my interview back in October!

Which interview group were you in in October? I was in the October 23rd group.
