You went to Oasis two nights in a row? Man roommie, you're ambitious.

Hello all. Class of 2013 here. My fiancee and I are coming up to the area January 11-16 in search of a place to live. We are hoping to rent and was wondering where some nice apartments are. We are really hoping to rent a house. :xf: If anyone can give me a heads up regarding where we may be able to find one, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for the help!

Remember, several folks in the Class of 2011 will be moving in May/June.

Go to the school where you feel more at home, because that's what it's going to be for a while! I remember falling in love with the DCOM when I visited - the staff and faculty are so generous and welcoming - if you get to be around them every day, you see that it's genuine and not a "sales pitch". Heck, Dean Stowers invited us all over for Thanksgiving dinner! They take care of us like family and that's really comforting when your nearest family member is 8 hours away in Michigan. 👍 As for NSU, I remember being unimpressed when I couldn't even get anyone in the admissions office to answer the phone or return my calls! I'm still convinced the phone sits on a desk in an empty room

There are sincere sales pitches. 😉 I didn't mean to sound so negative. I'm sure if I wound up there I'd be perfectly content and champion the school as much as anyone else. I'm just stubborn. When I got done with NSU I had all sorts of the same weird feelings. I def. believe Dean Stauers is a genuinely kind and caring person. I had no doubt about that when I met him, or the rest of the staff. I talked to him for a while. Every person I met there was happy, regardless of just finishing an exam. For such a revolutionary and supposedly technologically advanced school, they really didn't show much of that, which was what I expected. They simply used the same statements that every other school made. The sim labs are cool, but my research involved those things and making nursing/medical students and doctors freak out, so it wasn't anything new to me. The lecture halls were very nice, but I don't think I've been to a place yet that didn't have nice lecture halls with big projection/screens of some sort. The only thing I could ever imagine truly expanding on would be the breakout room type things. There are what? Like 15 there. For 280 med students or however many are there total during the 2 years, it just seems a little scant. Not a deal breaker by any means...just inconvenient.

And yes, the admissions office is a pain in the arse at NSU. Thankfully, you don't deal with them afterwards. I now just go straight to people via email and get instant responses.

Again, I don't want to make it seem like I'm against the school or hated it by any means. I also probably went up there with the wrong goal in mind. I kind of viewed it a pitstop to see my sister and nephew rather than an interview and real opportunity. (I hadn't seen her for a long long time) It is also good to note that I have never fallen in love with any school or location until I'm removed from it. Its just my nature. I'm a stubborn pain in the arse like that. I supposedly have a letter at my house from LMU now. I'm going to assume it is a rejection. It sounded pretty small and I didn't interview well. 😛

Woohoo!!! Got the letter in the mail yesterday afternoon...And now im just feelin ohh soo good 🙂 Goodluck to everyone still waiting to interview...see you all next year 👍:highfive::banana::biglove::zip::claps::soexcited:

hello everyone! is it too late to apply? I am a 20Q with a 3.65. Are all the spots filled? What are my chances? Love to see what you guys think

So me and my wife will be moving out for the class of '13 and we're trying to figure out where to bank. We use Bank of America right now and will probably keep an account there but the closest one is in Knoxville. Is there a local bank that is decent in or around Harrogate/Middlesboro?

nobody can tell you besides the admissions committee. being this late with a 20Q seems pretty unlikely in my opinion. have you filled out an aacomas? if you have see if you can get a secondary in asap. if not, i'd say probably not going to happen. of course, stranger things have happened. if you can spend the money you might as well try.

My AACOMAS is filled, and i'm still waiting to hear back from some other schools, was wondering also what this school's average is.

Avg is a 24 or 25.

If you are from the tri-state area, AL, Ga, Miss., you stand a decent shot at an interview (who knows, but tha's a guess). 20 MCAT hurts, I'd just keep in touch with the school and see if you can make head-way by expressing continual interest.

We bank at National City in Middlesboro - it's on Cumberland Ave, so it's pretty convenient. They have good online banking too. 👍

I'm mailing in my deposit this week!! Woo hoo!

Does anyone have any input regarding LMU-DCOM's DO-MBA and/or DO-pHD programs? I know they are both in the works but was hoping to get some more definitive details regarding when they should be launched?

Thanks so much!

We still maintain our BoA accounts. I'm praying they open a branch here soon. The online capabilities and fee structure of the local banks will make you appreciate BoA.

Nothing is gonna happen with the DO/PhD degree for a few years....they still need to get the research building built. From my point of view, I see nothing happening with that for a minimum of 5 years, closer to 10. They are going to wait for at least a few classes to graduate before putting it into place. As for the DO/MBA program, I know they are close to it, but I don't know how close. I would email Dr. Leo to find out what the status is on that since I have not asked about it in awhile.

I just wanted to say that I got an interview on January 20th!! I'm so exited because this school is my top choice!!

My main question is does anyone happen to know the ratios of acceptance to interviewed? I know some schools interview a whole lot more than they accept. I am not from the surrounding area of the school (I live in FL) and was surprised the school called me for an interview.

Can anyone fill me in with some sort of stress releasing information 😍

http://www.lmunet.edu/dcom/academics/sites.htm

everyone is assigned a core hospital where you do most of your rotations at, then you do selective and electives elsewhere.

Thank you! I just want to make sure I have this straight - all students live in the Harrogate area for the first two years and then move to the city in which their core hospital is located for the next two years? I'm assuming the selectives/electives aren't something students move to another city for. I am just wondering because I have children and would want to know if we would be moving around a lot. Thanks again.

Hi I dont know the ratios for acceptance, but if it makes you feel better I am from FL too and i got in! it was my first choice as well, just make sure you let them know that and you'll do fine!
good luck interviewing!!!

Everyone lives in harrogate for the first two years of basic science at DCOM. Then you move to the city where your core hospital is. During your third year you will do 7 months of rotations there. 2 more months will be done at different selective hospitals within a 60 mile radius from your core hospital. There is one month vacation time. The final 2 months of the year you can do electives anywhere you want. I plan to do "audition rotations" with these two months at away locations where residency programs I am interested are at.

I am pretty sure most of your 4th year rotations are near the 3rd year core hospital so you wont have to move again.

Let me throw my two cents in here for you. I am a mom from the class about to jump into rotations and my two kids are in school so I know your concerns. There are options available to you that would allow you to keep your kids in one school for the entire 4 years as long as you don't mind driving some. I live and will stay in Middlesboro and will be commuting to my core rotations in Morristown (along with a few of my classmates). I also know a few people who live in Tazewell and will be commuting to Morristown (this would be the best option to not have to move in my opinion). There are also those who live in Knoxville and have commuted to school this entire time. This option is good if you have a spouse who can't find work in Harrogate, you already live in Knoxville and want to stay or just plain ole love Knoxville and don't mind commuting for 2 years. As for selectives and electives (which make up the majority of the last 2 years) you can do those pretty much anywhere. The school has a bunch set up around the core hospitals but you can also set up some on your own. I know some people are planning on doing most of those in a different state completely. Should you choose to you will be able to do all of those w/in 60 miles of your core site though and more than likely w/in 60 miles of where you are living (ie: Tazewell or Middlesboro). Just keep in mind there are 3 months your 4th year that you have to do near your core site. All else is up to you.

Hopefully I haven't clouded the situation for you. Bottom line is if you plan ahead and don't mind comutting some you will be able to keep your kids in the same school the entire 4 years

Hi guys,
I have a quesiton about deposit at DCOM. I got accepted on Dec 4, 2008 and I sent a check of 2000 to DCOM on Dec 16, 2008 but still haven't heard anything from school. Is this normal or what? Do I need to call school for this?

Thanks

I think they send out a receipt but I cant remember how long it takes. It never hurts to call and check up on things. Better safe than sorry.

I sent my deposit on a saturday and received an email saying they received it on the next Monday- 1 mail day out-of-state xmas week was very impressive USPS!

Anyway, what's next? I know we have to send our transcripts to DCOM but that's all the info I've received thus far.

Also, can anyone comment on living in the Inn apartments vs. other options. I'm not too picky, have no pets or family moving with me, but do want to be close to the school.

The student apartments are great. Its close to the school, there is a pool, outside grills, volleyball court, basketball court and a gym. By the time you move in the fall they will have completed the renovations downstairs. They are adding a big lounge with a big screen tv (I assume it will be a plasma since everything else is), bar (which we stock with whatever we want), bike storage, expanding the gym and possibly adding a mini putting green. The only downside to the apartments is the fire alarm going off quite frequently but it seems to go off less and less.

just like missdochopeful said, the facebook page is a great option that is getting off the ground. just to add, check with these landlords (b/c they have tons of properties). the easiest way to find out about what they've got is to call (the websites aren't very helpful)

Commercial Bank is pretty good too. They've got lots of branches in the area, but not much further than 60 miles out (i don't think), but they've got a pretty good deal going on right now:
Hometown Rewards--free checking that earns you interest, ATM surcharge reimbursements, online banking/bill pay
Plus, the school's Balance of Aid checks are drafted thru them, so you get access to your money immediately instead of having to wait for it to clear.

When shipping/receiving to/from up here, add a day to any delivery estimate.

In your case, there's a good chance everyone hit the road after the last exams on the 17th. I'd call Monday the 5th and double check.

I interviewed 11/17 and I remember nascardoc and a few others plugging the hiking/mountain biking/ outdoorsy type stuff in the area. I read online that the dorms become available July 1st, so I was considering coming up a few weeks early and having some fun before the insanity begins. Could I trouble anyone for some specifics on trails in the area/cool places to hike/mountain bike in the area and how to get there?

Hey squad, I'm not really big into outdoorsy stuff, but you could check out the Visitor Center here at the National Park. If you are in Middlesboro heading toward Harrogate, it's the exit right before the tunnel. We just got back from Christmas break, so other students will probably start trickling back onto SDN when they don't want to pay attention to lecture  They can probably give you better leads.

Hey can anyone with the student insurance tell me what you pay for prescription meds and where I could find the list of meds covered. Thanks!

am i reading that right? 51.00 for a student and spouse? that's awesome, at least something is cheap in med. school

That is for dental insurance, not health insurance.

For health insurance, per semester it is $864 for student only, $1965 for student + spouse, $1685 for student + child(ren), and $2808 for famly. For dental, going in the same order, it is $135, $306, $371, and $541, respectively.

The insurance policy is really good, for everything. Plus, with the health insurance, there is no copay when you use the clinic on the 2nd floor of the school.

I think that was just for dental, could be wrong.

Just got the call from Amy today to schedule my interview, woohoo! I was happy to get the call b/c I'm from FL as well. I'm looking forward to some good pizza the night before too!

Anyone else interviewing on January 27th?

P.S. Let's GO GATORS! Show 'em what the SEC is made of! 😎

just got the call from Amy as well this afternoon! i will be interviewing with you on Jan. 27th. I hope to meet you at the pizza get-together! i'm from colorado btw. Good luck!

Is anyone interviewing on the 26th??? 🙂

Sounds good. Yea, I'll have to drive 10 hours to get to Harrogate so some good, filling pizza sounds good. I'm looking forward to meeting some current students and get their take on the school and curriculum. Good luck to you too!

BTW, your avatar name "Falling Gator" doesn't give the Gators a positive vibe for tomorrow's game 😛 (eventho I'd like to see them win)

i'm interviewing on jan 27th! excited to meet you!

Just interviewed on the 6th, immaculate facilities and the students are all extremely helpful and willing to answer any questions. Make sure you catch a movie in Middlesboro for $1.50 before you head back and good luck!

The drive isn't all that bad, took me about 9 hrs from Gville to there.

Anyhow, GO GATORS!!!! We're going to smoke the Oklahoma Sooners tomorrow night!

9 hours doesn't sound too bad. Better than the 10 hour ETA from google maps. Congrats on getting accepted, hopefully I'll be able to join you within the next month.

Hey good luck! I'm from UF too, and had an interview here at LMU. Got in, really awesome school. I'm sure you'll like it a lot. Pretty pumped up to start school here in the fall.

Ohhh no not more UF grads........ 🙄 haha
