so im two weeks away from my interview and im getting a little nervous about what to expect. I feel like im a little late in the game and im not from the appalachian region, so i know that doesnt help either. does anyone have any advice/tips for this nervous wreck? this is my first interview (hopefully the first of many!) and LMU is definitely at the top of my list. Thanks for the help! 😳

Totally check out the interview feedback page like missdochopeful suggested, being prepared for the questions on there definitely eased my nerves. And you should not feel that you are late in the game at all, I still consider this early! I didn't interview until late Feb and it was my 1st interview too. Also, dont think that not being from this area is a set-back, their are people from both classes from all over, I came from Ca and had never even be anywhere close to this part of the country before. I do think a desire to give back to smaller, underserved communities like this one though is a plus. You just let them know your strong interest in the school and you'll be fine! Good Luck :xf:

With the recent posts talking about expensive plane tickets, let me suggest a way to help out. For future interviewees, look at flying into either Louisville or Nashville and driving the 3 hours to LMU-DCOM. Tyson-McGee airport in Knoxville is outrageously expensive and these 2 other options are much cheaper. Southwest flies into both cities, as does every other airline, so you can definitely find some great deals. Just thought I would help out the wallet b/c God knows mine is super-duper thin right now......*sigh*

Have you checked out SDN's interview feedback section? Here's a link to LMU's page:

You sound a LOT like I did last year and it helped me to get an idea of the kinds of questions that get asked. Other than that, just be yourself. You'll be fine. :luck: They obviously like you enough to invite ya down... er... up in your case! 😀

Thanks so much! I was checking out the link and it is VERY helpful...It looks like the interviews aren't too bad, lots of positive feedback 🙂 I'm really excited about pizza night ::yum:: Any idea as to what time I'm supposed to arrive? I didnt see a time listed on the email invite 🙁 Oh, and I just got another interview for KCOM 🙂 But LMU is still at the top of my list! 😀

SWEET! I live in Miami, but I have very strong ties to NC...I hope thats considered appalachian enough 😀 But I see what you're saying with wanting to work in underserved communities...I'm a city girl, but underserved communities is what i'm all about 🙂 I hope it works out! Thanks for the advice...I'm feeling much better about it :luck:

I believe pizza night starts at 7:00, but you can come a little earlier, there should be some DCOM people there starting at about 6:30.

Me and my roommate will be there on Sun. Dec. 14th if any of y'all will be there too!

I may have to come up on a Sun/Mon night to say hi to you guys!!! I'm dying for some oasis pizza!!!

WooHoo! I cant wait for some yummy pizza 😛

I'll go ahead and admit that's not something I thought I'd ever read or hear.

Wow, seriously, MJB?? Oh man.. their pizza was most excellent!!!!

I rank it up there with Giordano's in Chicago. 😀 (which is my #1 fave pizza!)

OK....I feel like I am obligated to reply to this being a Chicagoian. Yeah, Oasis is good, but it is nowhere close to Giordano's or any other pizza joint in Chicago. Yes, I think its better than Pizza Hut, but it is way behind Giorodano's, Gino's East, Aurelio's, etc....you can't get better than those.....and Gino's East is the BEST!!!

And being someone who is well not from Chicago, but has been there many a time, pretty much any Chicago pizza is going to be better than Oasis. It's just a fact.

Oasis is yummy though, just don't go in there expecting some Chicago-esque pizza 😀

First of all, relax! I interviewed on 12/2 and it was nothing to worry about. Going to the pizza night really helps to break the ice, since you get to meet the students and other interviewees. The interview itself is very conversation-like. They are not out to probe and interrogate you, they just want to make sure you have a personality and can communicate with others.

Best of luck!

Yeah, Gino's East is pretty awesome (the hub had some ordered on dry ice for an anniversary, swoon)! But, imho, out of the pizzas *I* have had, Oasis is #3 (ok, forgot about Gino's East) on my list. But maybe I was just really hungry? Or I'm not very pizza-ly cultured? Guess I'll have to give it another shot to confirm. 😉

Nascar doc you forgot Lou Malanatis! I'm sad to leave chicago... pizza just isn't the same anywhere else!

when they called me for interview invite I thought they said "LMU-<i>de best college of osteopathic medicine</i>" I was like Wow, are they allowed to say that? lol

needless to say I figured it out!

Congrats Pianoman! I missed his call too. I wish I couldve talked to Dr Stowers in person bc I was so excited! Were you the guy from Alabama or Auburn?
Congrats on your acceptance!! I was so happy they let us know so quickly 😀

Well I didn't go to Alabama for undergrad, but I am definately the non-Auburn guy. Roll Tide (despite the FL loss)!

I was also pretty stoked to get the call so soon. It's nice to have one in the bag as I go to interview at other schools! So no matter what happens from here on out, I'm gonna be a doctor!

Yea the first acceptance is always the best! & sorry about the FL loss. I was rooting for you (I'm the FL state girl)
Well good luck to you.. hope your other interviews go as successfully!

I was wondering if any current students could comment on the need to take anatomy before starting at DCOM. I was never able to take anatomy at my university (budget cuts) and am considering taking a class at a community college this spring. Unfortunately they broke it up into 2 levels but I got the approval to take both at the same time. Oh and I work full-time with a second part-time job so time is short but I'll do it if necessary. Any thoughts?

I know my wife was really glad to already have had anatomy in undergrad. The work load is fierce, so anything you can do to free up brain space would appear to be worth it to me.

I would say if you have the time and want to it doesn't hurt, but its definitely not necessary. I had never had it before and did fine. I know several others in the same situation. The level of detail for anatomy in medical school will trump any undergraduate course. Personally, I would just work, save some money and worry about the anatomy once you got here.

Personally, I wouldn't worry about taking it now. I didn't take it in undergrad, and I'm doing just fine. It definitely would have helped to have had it in undergrad, but I really wouldn't bother picking up an extra course between now and then, especially if your time is already pretty tight. Spend you time between now and July relaxing as much as possible. You'll be learning all you need to know about Anatomy in no time.

Questions for students: How well do you all think the faculty have done with integrating different types of learning? I guess what I'm asking is how much time you all spend doing things other than just didactic lectures? For instance, do you all spend a lot of time on clinical case correlations, working with MEDMEN and standardized patients, and doing computer simulations? Are those experiences integrated well into the topics you are going over in lecture at that time?

I think we do as good a job as any school really. We aren't a PBL school so there is a large quantity of our day spent in didactic lectures, however we do utilize computer simulations and standardized patients starting early in the first year. By medmen I'm assuming you mean something like a Simman from Laerdal? If so then we use them as well, about every month to 1.5 mo. We don't use it extensively but then again most wouldn't know what to do anyhow so it works out well. Simulations in my opinion are best handled in internship/residency when the student has a more complete knowledge base to work with. Often in the simulations you are just messing up hoping to fall somewhere close to right. That in mind I think we utilize our simulation equipment very well.

My interview is in 5 days and I am PUMPED 🙂 So excited about it! And definitely looking forward to some yummy pizza...I hope the outcome leads to any even merrier x-mas 🙂 :luck:

I interview on January 13, 2009. Excited to say the least. Can anyone provide input on interview questions? Also is suit/tie appropriate or is it more laid back at LMU-DCOM?

Good luck! You'll be great 👍

Heads up to anyone interviewing Monday - you probably won't be able to get into the anatomy lab to check it out. We have our last lab practical exam that day :scared: But if you're staying overnight, you might be able to make arrangements to check it out later that evening if it's really important to you. Give the admissions office a call to find out.

this may not be a common thing, but LMU is getting me through finals week right now. just knowing that i will be able to learn medicine at a great school like LMU is motivating me to actually study...the end is near...

oh yeah and congrats. to the future interviewees and newly accepted..

Semper-

it will most likely be chilly (in the 40's)... I'd wear your suit, and bring a rain jacket or something in case. It's not really cold here, but it has been chilly lately... You're not outside a ton, unless they changed it a lot from last year.

My interview is in 5 days and I am PUMPED 🙂

Be sure and come by for a cup of coffee. My wife is usually here and always loves to talk about being married to a Marine. 😉

And good luck!

Marine? i can about imagine how she talks about it...

I just got into the Holiday Inn Express. Drove up from Florida today. I already clogged the toilet, go me! I like how I was driving along wondering where the school was and then see the big sign followed by a massive building rising over the horizon and towering over the rest of harrogate and the LMU campus. It was very subtle. 😉
