It was great meeting everyone at Oasis tonight! Good luck on your interviews tomorrow!

I was so tired, distracted by the football, and far away from you guys that it probably wouldn't have clicked anyway!

Be sure and come by for a cup of coffee. My wife is usually here and always loves to talk about being married to a Marine. 😉

And good luck!

Haha! Will do! Im in the airport now getting ready to board my flight...I have a long day of travel ahead of me, but im excited 🙂 Hope to see everyone at the Oasis tonight! 🙂

Just got the call that im in! This is the best day EVER! and I do mean, EVER!

I just visited DCOM on Saturday and wanted to tell all of you how impressed I am with your school ! As a local of sorts I thought it would be worth it to start my search close to home. I hadn't planned on applying to a DO program but DCOM has definitely changed my mind. You all seem genuinely happy with the school. The OMM demonstration was interesting (especially for those of us not familiar with it). The tour guides ( mine were Tim and Ian I believe) did an awesome job too. Keep up the good work!👍

Couple of questions now that I am officially a member of the LMU-DCOM c/o 2013!!!!!!

How often do you have tests? Theyre graded traditionally as I recall, correct?

Any decent restaurants to recommend in reference to taking family/girlfriend out to eat when visiting in town?

Any idea when next year's white coat ceremony will be?

Assuming it is like this year, you'll have tests approximately every 3-4 weeks (usually 3). They are tested as follows. Anatomy, Molecular Fundamentals of Medicine (Biochem, etc), and Foundations of Modern Healthcare are all tested together in a block test every 3 weeks. Our osteopathic tests (lab and written) are three times a semester, and our EPC (Essentials of Patient Care) class (written) is tested twice in the semester. By traditionally, I assume you mean A, B,C, F (passing is above 70). You get individual grades of course, as well as a couple of points at the end of the semester if you show up to all our group tests. (Ask for more info).

I am not a good person to ask on places to eat out, because I try to save money as much as possible, as well as I go to Knoxville a lot to see my wife (I live up here duirng the week, and go home on the weekends to see her... at least right now)

White coat is typically the third weekend in October, but the best idea would be to call the Admissions office and ask... they'll have the academic calendar more or less made by now (I think)

Congratulations on your acceptance... enjoy your last 8 months of freedom (I'm kidding... not really)

Congratulations!

You can look at our class schedule on the school's website under "academics," it says when we've had all our tests... usually we have had our block exams every 3-4 weeks. Our white coat ceremony this year was October 18th, so I would think it would probably be around the same time next year. As far as restaurants go, the selection is limited, but one that most people really like and have to go to at least once is a local one, Webb's down in Cumberland Gap, across from the post office. They have your typical southern foods. A lot of people also like Old Town Grille in Tazewell, which has a nicer atmosphere, you can actually get a beer there, and bring some wine and they will serve it to you if you so desire.

Hope that helps 🙂

Aww man you beat me to it!

I interviewed on the 9th. I agree that is a great way to start the holidays. That is nice of them to call

i just got an interview today on my birthday! can someone give me some advice?

The biggest thing for me was to relax and show how much I wanted to be there

I need to decide on LMU-DCOM or NSU this week... any input?

Well, in my totally unbiased opinion, I think you should pick DCOM 😀

You've interviewed there, you know how awesome our facilities and faculty are.

Are you from IL? If so, DCOM is closer to home, you can drive there (I am from WI, and the drive home really isn't bad) I suppose you could drive to NSU too, but that would take a hella long time. Also, NSU is in FL, FL is humid and sticky and hot way too long. Here at DCOM, we have all 4 seasons! Ok, you probably will base your decision on more than the weather, so if you have any specific questions or concerns, just ask and I'll try to answer them best I can!

I need to decide on LMU-DCOM or NSU this week... any input?

I just interviewed at LMU and am accepted at NSU. Honestly, I'm still sticking with NSU.

I thought it was a nice school and everyone was very nice and helpful but the stories they told were exactly the same as everywhere else. I don't mean that in a bad way, but it was just the same stuff I heard everywhere else. The facilities were nice, but they weren't awe inspiring to me. Nearly every school I've been to works with sim labs and integrates early clinical exposure. Everything was shiny and new, but it isn't like the stuff at nova is bad by any means.

I find the required laptop a fairly trivial negative. No matter what way you spin it, I simply HATE being told what computer to buy. You can cite all the reasons but I was actually on the committee for my own program in undergrad to decide, so I have probably have a more detailed understanding of the programs than many people.

Faculty: Both are great and will get you where you want. I've heard pros and cons with each. I really don't know what else to say about that. It is one of those things that you really don't know until you experience it for yourself.

Location: I like rural areas but aside from the nature, the area just did not click with me. I thought the little mini apartment things were more depressing than anything else, especially for over 500. I lived in a place that was only a little more per year, in a busy area and walking distance from my current campus with a full kitchen and a ton more space....and yes electric, internet, cable, etc. was including in the bill.

Rotations: I feel like NSU wins this one for me. You have the opportunity to go to small hospitals if you want, but you don't have to. I like the structure and organization of DCOMs, but I just wasn't that wowed by the options.

Tuition: NSU is cheaper for me, but I'm instate.

I think I reached LMU-DCOM with such ungodly high expectations from all the talk on here. In the end, nearly every anatomy and OMM lab has had cameras and tons of flat screen tvs at every school I've been to. They all have had wireless. They all have sim labs, and some were actually a little nicer. I did like the one to practice scrubbing in, but heck, I've done it at real ones a few times already. I felt the flow of the building was kind of odd and would've liked to see more than 15 little conference/study rooms. Another huge turnoff for me was that lack of a big gym. For most it isn't much of an issue, but as a person that is pretty hardcore into lifting the little thing with less plates total than I can already benchpress was a turnoff. I'm also a little biased because my brother lives near nova and I have a ton of friends that are going there for a variety of things. Everyone that chose DCOM loves the school and are extremely proud of it. I have no doubts that you will get a solid education there. I did feel like I was getting thrown a sales pitch a lot of the day.

In the end, you just need to do a gut check and look at your goals/what feels right. I know I won't get distracted in either location because I'm simply not the type to randomly go to a concert on a whim. I schedule my time and study accordingly to do it. Something like TV is my greatest enemy, and those are present at both locations!

WOOHOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I also got the call today!!!

Yes, I remember you too. I don't know about any others, I know there were a lot of people that said they were "lurkers" on SDN, but didn't really post! I wish some more would post because I was rooting for you all too!

But yes a facebook group has been started. I joined today. I just searched it, the name is LMU-DCOM Class of 2013!!!!

I guess I will see you in the fall!

From the Class of 2011....Merry Christmas!!! This video was put together by one of our classmates and totally rocks. It is hilarious....and yours truly is in it, along with NPEMTIV (he is giving me an EKG). There is a whole mess of other ones on youtube, so watch them and laugh. So, this does prove that we have time to do other things besides study......enjoy!!!!!!

Merry Christmas!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Love the videos haha! Nascardoc... can you comment on TN winters? We're having terrible weather in IL right now and I need to choose between NSU and DCOM this week. I know you understand when I say terrible weather ha.

Go to the school where you feel more at home, because that's what it's going to be for a while! I remember falling in love with the DCOM when I visited - the staff and faculty are so generous and welcoming - if you get to be around them every day, you see that it's genuine and not a "sales pitch". Heck, Dean Stowers invited us all over for Thanksgiving dinner! They take care of us like family and that's really comforting when your nearest family member is 8 hours away in Michigan. 👍 As for NSU, I remember being unimpressed when I couldn't even get anyone in the admissions office to answer the phone or return my calls! I'm still convinced the phone sits on a desk in an empty room

People pick schools for different reasons and fortunately we don't all like the same school or it would make this process even tougher. Obviously we all picked this school because we liked it the best or it made sense for us, so you aren't going to get much unbiased feedback here. It's best that way though - I'd much rather have classmates that are equally passionate about DCOM as I am, then have classmates that don't really see what's so special about DCOM and take away seats from those who do.

Good luck with your decision :luck: And now that I am done with my first semester of medical school I'm going to do something other than stare at a computer screen all day :soexcited: Merry Christmas, y'all!

This is based strictly on my experience of living in TN for the last 18 months, and the new definitions I've learned for these terms (I'm from KS/MO):
"Cold" is anything below 50 or so.
"REALLY COLD" is anything below about 35-40.
"Windy" is anything over a slight breeze.
"Snow" is flurries that, IF THEY STICK, are gone by noon in almost all cases.
I've actually seen schools closed due to the THREAT of snow. (granted, there are a LOT of back roads that do get slick pretty easily)

The most treacherous weather I've experienced here is a really heavy rain which causes the water to pool on the roads (the roads are not really sloped much to allow for runoff)

Any other questions, feel free to ask. Those are just my impressions.

Congrats to 2012'ers on finishing 1st semester.

Hi Stanner! I'm Kristin. I interviewed the same day as you and I got in too...which one were you?

And hello to everyone else! I think your school is amazing and I'm so excited to have the opportunity to attend LMU-DCOM!

Hey Kristen, I think you were sitting beside me at the interview. I was the guy from Canada. Which one were you?

LOL!!! TN winters are nothing like Chicago. Last year, we had a total accumulation (for all season) of maybe 5 inches of snow...and like MJB said, its melts right away. Its about 45 degrees in TN this week and 15 in Chicago.....nuff said. TN doesn't have the cold weather like Chicago, and there is never a ton of wind. The biggest threat is ice, espcially after it rains during the day and gets below freezing at night. But as for comparing what we are used to, TN winters are very mild.

As for your decision, the best advice I can give is to go with your gut.....the "feeling." I had it when I interviewed at DCOM and we didn't have a building to tour or anything, just promises (most of which they fulfilled). I don't know much about NSU, so a direct comparison, at least from my eyes, would be difficult. What I would ask of you, is to either post or PM me any questions, concerns, etc. about DCOM and I will be more than happy to answer them for you. I would prefer for someone to make an informed decision and be happy where they go rather than forcing someone to go somewhere. Obviously, I am biased towards DCOM and would HIGHLY recommend it to anyone, but I want you to make the decision thats best for you. Let me know how I can help in anyway.

Got into Chicago today and I can say I don't miss the cold weather. And with the 10-inches of snow and 1/2-inch of ice on the way tomorrow, and crappy ass traffic that accompanies all of it, it should be a fun "reunion." I still love this city, but damn.....its crazy.

Correction, I was not sitting beside you. I was the guy that interviewed after you with the same interviewers. Congratulations on the acceptance

So many helpful comments, thanks! Honestly I def had the "feeling" at DCOM last year and then again this year. I went to my interview at NSU to reassure my DCOM decision but did find some info on NSU that caught my attention in a positive way. The winter question may have seemed a little silly to most of you but I seriously cannot handle another intense winter. I get SADD every year and look forward to summer all year long. So after coming back from FL earlier this week with a temp change of 70 degrees (no joke), I became pretty curious of TN's winter. Def sounds much better!!

Just to make you all laugh, and learn how ridiculous chicago winter is if you are unaware...
Went to get my car out of O'Hare's lot this week after being parked for 5 days outside and it was frozen to the ground. Trunk was frozen shut, had to put luggage in back seat. Windows frozen shut, had to get out of car to pay tolls (lots in the area too), had to break apart the ice chunks on my wipers, and even scrape some ice on the INSIDE of a window. Oh yes and then my normally 15-20 min drive home from work last night took an hour. I'm so ready to get out of here! And welcome home Nascardoc, ha! Tomorrow will be terrible...

I don't miss that stuff AT ALL. I don't THINK I've scraped a windshield since moving here. The weather here cannot be beat in my opinion. It's not as hot in the summer as back home and it's nowhere near as cold in the winter.

Heck, I'm strongly considering going golfing this afternoon. I'm gonna guess it's a bit chilly to do that back in KC, or in Chicago. Actually, just looked and my hometown is under an Ice Storm Warning. Don't miss those suckers at all.

I lived for 4 years in Northern Ohio before escaping back south.
I can't for the life of me figure out why people choose to live with that stuff.

I sent an email to a professor at DCOM asking a specific question on preparing for matriculation in which I received a quick helpful response. After attending a Big Ten school... this is what I'm looking for. Love it. I think I made my decision; See y'all in August 😀

Yep I remember you...congratulations to you too and have a happy Christmas!

Hey everyone I have an interview in January, Ive been looking at the thread for a while now and trying to take in all the info I can. Congrats to everyone on their acceptances. I interviewed at DCOM 2 years ago and was waitlisted, and was wondering if anyone could tell me who their interviewers were, just out of curiosity. Thanks.

To all the students that were at the Oasis monday night (12/15) THANK YOU!!! You guys were great and being there really eased my fears...The school is amazing and the town is absolutely beautiful...I hope I get some good news this week 🙂 :luck: :xf:

Got to say....those videos rocked! They were great! Nice job class of 2011. 👍 The friendliness of the staff to participate in those videos is really awesome. I can't wait for the fall!!!! 😀

HAHAHA  I cringed at that AND when I thought we might have another weather debate that my town is snowier than yours  To save everyone the time - the girl from Poland wins 😛
