So here's a question... What sort of loupes do most dentists use in the military? Is there a trend as to what works better (TTL or Flip down)?

I'm sure the environment of the dental office and the pace is going to change from day to day and from one assignment to another, but are there any current officers on the forum that even use them?

Thanks!

Most answers you get on this will be personal preference. I'll give you some info and my personal preferences.

TTL loupes have a better width of field. They are closer to your eyes and therefore you get a better width of field.

My personal preferences:
TTL only

Orascoptic 3.5 prismatic or Designs for Vision 3.5 regular field.
Many will say you should start with 2.5. I did that and after switching to 3.5 I have recommended all my residents buying loupes to get at least 3.5. I haven't found the expanded field to be a huge advantage, for me, in 3.5. I think that is personal preference. I have one set of each and wear them interchangeably.

Metal frames
I don't like the oakley type frames for loupes. I had a pair that I had to send back 3 times and they just couldn't get them to fit me. I ended up getting my $$ back. I also have had experience with several other types of loupes on this type of frame and most of the owners liked them at first, but later regretted getting them. They are just harder to fit and adjust.

I agree the oakley frames I have are awful. Do you know if we get another set paid for upon entering our AEGD?

Also agree if I could do it again I would not go with the athletic style frames...like 90% of my class went with them but a number of us have reaquired readjustment which means sending them back...took about 2 months for me to get mine back.

Don't know what the policy is with other branches, but our command purchased us Orascoptic loupes. We got to pick out our frames, etc, but in my case, I didn't like how the frames fit my face.

I went back to using my self-purchased surgitel loupes.

Best advice I can give you is to go to a regional dental convention, check out all the vendors and find something that fits your face. Oh, and go at least 3.0 -- you'll love it. =)
