Hi!

I have completed my bachelors of science in biology and didn't do so well the first time around (my sister passed away and I had a difficult time focusing on school, and my grades didn't end up being a priority - looking back, I probably should have taken some time off, but I didn't.) Anyways, I have been retaking classes to improve my GPA and have been doing well, however, I recently found out about the new AACOMAS grade replacement policy. I am really at a loss for what to do at this point. It feels pointless to continue retaking classes now and I am considering a post bacc/SMP. However, I have such a low sGPA, and I am not even sure what a competitive applicant looks like?

cGPA: 3.0
sGPA: 2.3

Any input appreciated! Thanks!

The general rule for DO (sub 3.0 in either sGPA or cGPA) is postbac (3.8+) for 30 credits of science, and if your gpa is still below 3.0 (both cGPA and sGPA) keep doing a postbac (3.8+) until you're above 3.0. That, with a 508+ MCAT should make you competitive at some DO schools.

There is rarely a sub 3.0 gpa in the underdogs acceptance thread so 3.0 seems to be the minimum (unless you are URM, then it's a different story).

Anything is possible. It would take a lot of work to improve that sGPA. How badly do you want to become a physician? Many places will auto-reject that sGPA, and cGPA, even with the grade replacement policy you would have to improve everything. It would take a lot of hard work and effort. You have to ask yourself, "am I willing to put in the work now to achieve my goals." Even if you improved everything you would need a really good MCAT score. Did you attempt the MCAT? Most SMP programs require a cGPA, and sGPA of 3.0 (at least the schools that I have researched)

*Roughness* You're pursing medicine and you do not even know the requirements for medical school? You only get back what you put in, and not even hard ass work guarantees you anything. The road ahead for you in medicine is a rough road but possible. 100% up to you though.

I am aware of the requirements for medical school but not for SMPs. Honestly, I never really considered a SMP until recently with the announcement of the change in policy. I was intending on retaking classes to improve my AACOMAS GPA. Thanks for your response!
