Ok, this is posted in the Psycho Ex-Girlfriend topic, but I doubt anyone will read it there. My pre-med advisor suggested I apply to MCP Hahnemann, but I'm really not keen on going to schools in a dangerous area. So far I'm applying to Vermont, Loyola, and NYMC. Are there any other lower tier schools that are in decent neighborhoods? I'd like to add one more to my list. Thanks!

if you're only looking for upscale places, stay away from all the city schools alltogether.

Finch appeared to be in a "safe" area. It was a really economically depressed area, but extremely rural and definitely appeared safe.

since when does decent mean upscale?
so mcp hahnemann is not in a bad area?

The area around CMS/Finch looked pretty darn safe when I was there. Then again, its in the middle of NOWHERE. And you do end up moving into Chicago during 3rd and 4th year, but I imagine you could move to a safe part of the city.

Yeah, Hahnemann is in a pretty decent part of Philly, but still in a city. Look at Albany Med and Chicago Med, both pretty far from cities.

i live in brooklyn and would consider western philly a decent area
a notch above that, would make it upscale according to my standards :)

I go to MCP Hahnemann currently (not the med school though). I've been to the med school campus a few times, and it seems like a nice enough area. I certainly wouldn't classify it as being in a "dangerous" area by any stretch of the imagination.

I would agree, by no standards have I EVER heard of Hahnemann being classified as "dangerous." Hahnemann is actually located in East Falls, a nice suburban-like part of Philly. A very good friend of mine has been there for two years and he walks back and forth from his apartment at all hours and has never had any problems. Perhaps you should look at the Temple campus for comparison!

Try Medical College of Wisconsin...it is located in suburban Milwaukee and the people at the school are terrific. It seems to have the best of both worlds, short drive to downtown for the urban feel and short drive to the conuntryside. About half of their students are out of state so non-residents have a great shot of getting in.

3 schools to stay away from in Philly:

Jefferson, Temple, and Penn.

MCW is in upscale suburb of Milwaukee, but you may be traveling into the city during the clinical years.

What are your stats?
