Hello, I'm knew to posting here but I've read a lot of threads. I'm an 18 year old freshman attending UAB (University of Alabama at Birmingham) and my plan is to go to Dental school. I have a question..........

Does dental school actually require for you to have a degree or would you simply have to have the prerequisites and then just apply?

I understand that this may vary amongst dif. schools and areas.

i know this doesn't specifically apply to dental school, but i'm sure it's similar. my roommate's cousin is on the admissions board at University of Chicago's medical school. he was telling my roommate that he should really think about majoring in something like anthro, or some other social science type of major. He was saying they like to see diversity and well-rounded individuals.

BUT, that doesn't mean go out and major in history. it really doesnt matter what you major in as long as you complete and do well in all the pre-reqs they require. at the same time, that doesnt mean screw up in the classes required for your major. Pick something you like. To be honest i chose psych as my major over neuroscience because the difficulty of classes was so much easier, not necessarily which one i like more - and it's def helped my gpa lol.

you're still only 18, you got a while to figure out what you wanna major in. do pre-reqs, and in time you'll see what you wanna major in

You just need the pre-reqs. My Dean recommends students to major in something easy because your gpa will be better and your pre-req will be you science gpa. So major in something easy and something you like and get As in those class and do really good in your pre-req classes as well. I recommed taking some upper division bio classes (helps you later). Good Luck.

You can get into dental school without finishing your degree, but it is very rare. The ADEA publishes a helpful book every year with stats and enrollment info for all of the Dental Schools in the US and Canada. Since you're in AL, I looked up some surrounding states:
All of the applicants for L, MS, TN, and Ga had bachelors degrees or more.

Many if not most d-schools require you to have BS/BA degree upon matriculation so, yes, you have to have a major (even univ-ties require you to establish major by your junior year, at least in my case).
