Of course it matters. It just matters less than other fields such as the PhD world, business, law, etc.

Not to mention the huge confounder is the quality of the students themselves.

Places like Stanford, WashU, Harvard, etc have a median MCAT of 37-38ish on the old scale.

That is way higher than the 30-33ish you see at your average school.

Except the MCAT doesn’t predict med school success. Like at all. Not to mention being a good resident. Sure you need a high MCAT to get In but there’s a reason no one is matching at small town community programs coming from Stanford...

Everyone says school name matters if your goal is to match a top academic center and it’s only the top 15-20 med schools that matter.

Getting into any specialty in an academic program is more than possible from any MD school. Less than half of graduates of the top academic residency programs in my field go into academics and those programs don’t always give the best surgical training, so for 90%+ there is no real benefit to going to those programs. It’s not something to get worked up over. Plenty people each year also choose strong mid tiers over big names because the name doesn’t matter as much as other factors. For the vast majority of people, what matters is matching into their specialty at a place that makes them happy.

The top 25% of any MD med school will also usually have big name academic institutions open to them. I did an away rotation at my #1, interviewed at a bunch of top programs, ranked that away #1 and matched in a surgical subspecialty. It doesn’t matter if I went to my school or Harvard because I got what I wanted. It was the same for many of my classmates yesterday.

That's fair and a good point. However, I would argue that your school name/reputation increase your chances for interviews, given that all other factors are somewhat equal. Bigger academic schools also have more access to research opportunities/letters of rec which can play a big role if you're trying to match into competitive surgical specialties in general or big academic institutions if you're ultimate goal is a competitive IM subspecialty.

Here is NYU's 2020 Match list (anonymized)--enjoy!

Anyone have SUNY Stony Brook Medicine's match list? (I used to TA for the med students there that I still know so if you could send me PM an UNanonymized list so I can reach out with congrats, etc. that'd be much appreciated.)

Thanks in advance!

Hi All - just wanted to bump my prior message, any chance someone has the SUNY Stony Brook Medicine's match list? If so, could you please DM me the UNanonymized version? Thank you!

Edit: All resolved--thanks, all!
