I asked one of our deans about this. He said that MOST of the times when people from our school don't match, it is explicable (ie, ranked only a few programs, not competitive for the field, etc). However plain bad luck cases where they really can't point to a reason even in retrospect do happen, but it is very very very rare.

You will, on rare occasions, see an applicant who has received ~15+ interviews but falls through the ranking cracks. But it's my understanding that the vast majority of the cases are due to overconfidence.

Letters, letters, letters. You'd be surprised what is written in some of these contrary to a student's stellar performance during clerkships. All it takes is a negative comment from faculty or upper level resident in your FOC to quickly weed you out of an interview pool. Some schools stand by not editing Deans letters by deleting such comments. Seems counterintuitive if you want your students to match well but that's life.

I'm sorry @Dr Love if you feel that our conversation about 'inbreeding within programs as evidenced by their match lists' or 'whether programs show explicit favoritism towards particular schools' is asinine and unrelated to the topic of the post, then feel free to take your nonconstructive opinion elsewhere. I hope you are more receptive to the opinions of others in real-life versus an anonymous forum, otherwise you're really gonna struggle once you start residency....

Okay, back to match lists! I don't want to start bending in a negative way, what should be a very positive thread.

To be fair, they have a point. They feel like they don't want to "downgrade"....I put this in quotes before people bring out the pitchforks and shoot the messenger. Although, personally, I would prefer a more metro city vs. a smaller flyover country place, I do think mid sized town do have culture and diversity and not THAT closed in a bubble.

It's huge relative to my school. Each class is 125 (5 are MD/PhD, so they kind of get lost in the ether by fourth year). There's rumors of expanding the class size to 150, though, to accommodate OOS students.

One of the mentors for the class gives a presentation on Worcester (brief history, restaurants, pubs/craft breweries, hiking spots/rock climbing centers/gyms, etc.), including how to pronounce it. Seriously. It's called "Worcester: The Paris of the New Millennium."

The 3rd year rotation is amazing! I dont believe there is any other clerkship similar to Georgetown's! Expectations are really high, lots of lectures/teaching, no clinic responsibilities-only OR, and everyone has fun!

...for training at least. The west side of the state is so much nicer. Plus, there's been an infusion of cash into the major hospitals in West Mich. We've lost a couple faculty to Spectrum/MSU in Grand Rapids and they rave about the place.

What? The school put it out with everyone's name. SDN's anonymity guideline pertain to posters. There's nothing in that link to suggest any of those people are SDN posters, let alone which SDN posters they are.

No no I agree entirely. Most of the time it's just public information. I personally didn't take issue with it, but I thought I'd just mention it before someone else did!
