Mayo 2008!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
oh...if you take the shuttle from MSP...you can try asking for the Mayo discount, I'm not sure what it is but they may give it to you because you're interviewing here.

I stayed with a student host and it was great. I also flew into MSP (because it was much cheaper) and rented a car to drive to Rochester. It was really a nice and easy drive. But if it is in the dead of winter that might not be the best drive to make...

Hey all. How long did it take for you to hear back about an interview offer after Jane told you that your essays and letters had been received?

But if it is in the dead of winter that might not be the best drive to make...

Congrats Phoenix!!! I am so happy for you!!! That's so wonderful that Jane let you know you'd be getting an invite tonight! :hardy::hardy:

I just want to let you know that you shouldn't be too concerned with the weather (besides getting into MSP on time) with your traveling. I live in Minneapolis and my parents live in Rochester, so I've driven between the two cities many times during college - and I've never had a problem with it during the winter. Unless you are driving during a snow storm, the road will be cleared off. And the drive is only an hour and 15 minutes or so, so driving from MSP is not a bad option. Plus, with global warming you probably won't even hit winter yet when you come interview

However, I would probably recommend taking the Rochester shuttle. If you stay with a host in Rochester you won't need a car, and I think it would just be easiest not to have one. Anyway, that's what I'd do if I was flying in to interview.

It's not too cold here yet, except at night. I would avoid flying through Chicago if you can, better to fly through MSP or take the shuttle from MSP...depending on how much you like REALLY tiny planes (if you're tall you may want to avoid that flight). There's a good bunch of hotels here...the Marriot and the Kahler are the two attached to Mayo but if you're anywhere downtown you can walk to the clinic or take the subway, otherwise there's shuttles from pretty much everywhere.

Hah! I live in Chicago! Pretty hard to avoid.... Guess I'll see what the flights are. I was just worried that being a smaller airport, Rochester may close due to weather more easily than MSP. If so, I'll fly into MSP and rent a car.

I guess I'll see if there's a student host available, and if not, I'll check out the hotels attached to Mayo. I'm assuming I won't be interviewing until the end of November or early December, so the weather won't be great. Funny thing - I was just at a dog park and met a woman from Minnesota so I got to ask her a bunch of silly questions about the winters. 🙂 Better her than someone at Mayo!

EDIT: Hmmm, nonstop from O'Hare to Rochester for under $200 on American Airlines doesn't sound bad.

Well...if you're already in Chicago...then it's a mad quick flight to Rochester. I wouldn't worry about them closing the airport here, we're pretty quick about clearing snow and I've seen them take off in a good foot or two of snow...just a touch scary in a tiny plane.

That's what I'll do then. Fly direct and not bother with a car or shuttle. Thanks!

Contrats pheonix! That's great. I didn't get an interview invitation email this morning, do you know what that means (if it means anything at all)? I called in to talk to Jane, but she isn't in the office today. 🙁. I was complete on Oct 5.

Umm...well, supposedly the invites were sent out last night for people complete on 10/8, and the people complete on 10/9 that are invited will go out tonight. But I'm not sure if this definitely means you were passed up or not, because I remember Jane saying that we would get an email one way or another (i.e., they email to tell you if you won't be receiving an interview invite). So, perhaps your application hasn't been reviewed yet? I don't know. I guess all you can do is wait for an email and/or call Jane on Tuesday. Good luck! :luck:

Can anyone help shed some light? I submitted my primary in early Oct and I have not heard back about request for secondary. Is this a cause for concern? Thanks.

Just for kicks, here are the 2005 fall admissions stats for Mayo:

Total: Applied: 2,869 Interviewed: 329 Accepted: 70 Enrolled: 43
Instate: Applied: 325 Interviewed: 63 Accepted: 16 Enrolled: 12
OOS: Applied: 2,544 Interviewed: 266 Accepted: 54 Enrolled: 31

so i thought id post some news..

i interviewed today and jane said they only accepted 5 people and they will accept more about 1x a month

good luck to everyone. the school is even better than i imagined, which is pretty hard to believe

Very cool Kiara! Congrats on your offered admissions. I like your tabulated cost of applying to med schools. Good luck with Mayo.

I got an invite this morning at 1:40 am CST! I was beginning to lose hope, but it finally came. I'm really pumped.

Congrats! I actually stayed up last night watching my email at 1:30am in anticipation, and of course it came at 1:30am today (Sunday) instead.

So, for those of you who stayed with student hosts, how was that set up? The interview scheduling site doesn't have any information about that, and neither did the invite email. Do they do a follow-up email about student hosts? Or is it something you need to inquire about?

Also, how long did you guys stay? Did you just fly in the night before and fly right back, or did any of you stay a day or two over the weekend to check out Rochester? I'm thinking about flying in on a Thursday evening (NOT booking the last flight of the day just in case it gets canceled), and maybe returning Saturday evening. Oh, and the earliest interview available was in early December.

And one more question - around what part of month does the committee usually meet? Mid-month?

I got a phone call from Cindy about the student hosts, asking if I wanted to stay. She then gave me the email address of the students host committee, they matched me up with someone.

I flew in the night before and flew back right after my interview, but in retrospect, flying back on saturday (my interview was friday) would have been better. The students invited me and the other interviewee to go out with them on friday night (they had an exam that day) and it would have been a good chance to get to know them better.

I think the committee meets mid month, but I'm not entirely sure?

ahh! i didn't get my complete email until oct. 16! i guess it will be about a week more of waiting for me. thanks for keeping this thread updated guys, and congrats phoenix!!

thanks. those tabulated costs are informative but kinda painful too:scared:

I feel for all of you guys...I interviewed at Mayo on Oct. 8th and got put on hold this first round. I've been accepted at University of Rochester in NY. Hopefully Mayo will pull through for me though. Good luck with the interviews.

How does the application fee payment work for Mayo? Do they send a request to pay their fee after receiving your AMCAS application, or do they only request payment if they decide to send you a secondary? I would appreciate any advice, thanks.

i believe that they request the fee before they'll even look at your primary. paying the fee does not guarantee a secondary.

Yeah, they ask for the application fee after you submit your primary. They will then contact you within 4 weeks if they are interested enough to ask you to submit your LOR. More waiting.

At least, they claim 4 weeks. Mine came in 5. I'm not complaining, though. 😀

Oddly enough, my secondary came one week after I paid the fee. But that might have had to do with the fact that I'm missing biochem, and I got an email from Jane asking me to give her a call to let her know when I plan to take it. Perhaps that expedited my secondary. No idea. Either that, or they don't have as many apps coming in recently as they did in the start of the cycle. I paid my fee at the end of September.

welcome to the thread tyemoe. i can see right through that user name. 🙂 have you received any other news yet from all the other schools you've interviewed at?

Do you any of you know if it's possible to find out who your interviewers will be before hand?

Well, as much as I was hoping I could post in the Mayo thread, I have been rejected. Best of luck to everyone!

i was just wondering if everyone tends to get the "you've been ranked" at like 1 AM on Fridays?

also, who was ranked after last Thursday's meeting and what date did u interview? I'm trying to guess the day that i'll be discussed so i can send happy brain waves to rochester!

Does anyone know when the next meeting of the admissions committee will be or when they are going to start calling for acceptances for Nov.?

I received my ranked email in the afternoon some time so it was not one of the automated ones. I do not know when the next committee meeting will be...

Phoenix:

Were you planning on taking Biochem anyway, or do you plan to take it now that you have an interview?

Mayo is the only school I've applied to that requires this class and I haven't taken it yet. I was planning on graduating a quarter early without taking it at all, but of course if I get into Mayo (I am complete but haven't received a complete e-mail yet) I would be okay (happy even) with staying an extra quarter to take the class. Do you know when the last day that Mayo gives out acceptances is? I'm just thinking that if I do get an interview but don't get in right away I won't know if I should take this class...

jane told us that they meet every thursday and that traditionally the interviews since the last thursday are discussed but that they are a bit behind right now.

i interviewed last friday so maybe ill get the ranked email this friday or next.

jane also said that they will be calling again in november, although online it says they call every 4 - 6 weeks.

im guessing sometime between 11/15 and 11/30

Custard: Yeah, I'd basically be taking biochem for Mayo. I believe that it's possible to be on hold until around June for Mayo, so I'm prepared for a long wait before any post-interview decision. If I'm still under consideration by the time the first summer session starts, that's when I'll take Biochem. I belive Jane said that they must have the transcript by the end of July, which would work. Good luck!

Shadow: I'd love to take it earlier, but I'm working this year (I'm an attorney) and I didn't find any feasible evening offerings of biochem for next semester. I talked to Jane, and she said it'd be fine to take it in the summer. I REALLY hope that wouldn't be the reason I wouldn't get in!

hooray! my interview invite came today! i am SUPER excited, i can't wait to go through this thread after work today and figure out how to get to rochester from california!

The Mayo biochem requirement is something to have *before* you matriculate. You do not need this before the interview so do not worry.

efex: That's also what Jane said, so I hope you two are right! I think what shadow was pointing out above is that I should take care of the biochem requirement as soon as possible post-interview so that they "see the commitment" when they're evaluating my application. I don't really have that option, so I fervently hope that they don't think that taking a pre-matriculation summer biochem course is evidence of a lack of commitment to Mayo! 😳

We are right about this trust me on this. Take biochem when you can and do not worry that it will effect your acceptance wether you take it earlier or not...

Thanks efex! There's enough to worry about as it is! 😳 And to be honest, when I try to be rational about it, I can't even fathom receiving the honor of one of those very very very few Mayo medical school spots. I only hope that there's a freakish fluke and all of the Mayophiles/Mayoites(???) in this thread get in! :luck:

I received an interview invitation this morning and am so very excited to be visiting Mayo!! I feel really lucky (and happy). Does anyone know if nearby hotels have discounts for Mayo interviewees? I'm hoping to stay with a student host the Thursday night before my Friday interview, but I was planning on staying Friday night as well so I can explore the area on Saturday.
