Mayo 2008!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I received an interview invitation this morning and am so very excited to be visiting Mayo!! I feel really lucky (and happy). Does anyone know if nearby hotels have discounts for Mayo interviewees? I'm hoping to stay with a student host the Thursday night before my Friday interview, but I was planning on staying Friday night as well so I can explore the area on Saturday.
the kahler grand is really cheap when you use the discount that mayo sends you. you should get that email soon. the hotel is nice. it has a very pretty lobby. i spent a little extra to get a full room w/a king size bed. i figured that its only once in your life that you interview at Mayo!!!! the room was nice but the bathroom kinda reminded me of hospital bathrooms. overall i would suggest it tho

Congrats on the invite gobears! I was bouncing around with glee for a good 3-4 days! Actually, still bouncing! When is your interview? Mid-December?

yes, mid-December! i'm trying to figure out my flights now. i know this may sound funny to some of you, but i have never driven in the snow (oh california...) should i just spend the $75 for a flight from Minneapolis to Rochester? i'm flying out of SFO i think, it's much cheaper than oakland or sacramento. my dad suggested renting a car, but i'm a little worried about the snow.

as far as student hosts go...do you only stay with them the night before your interview? if i can't find a red-eye out of minneapolis i think i may have to stay an extra night. thanks for the help you guys, transportation is rough

SO EXCITED!! gosh, i hope we all get in 👍

Hi Phoenix,

I did not mean to sound like you HAVE to take biochem to get accepted at Mayo. There are bigger and more important factors that the ADCOM considers for your acceptance. Everyone's situation is very different, and my comment was to be taken as a suggestion, so sorry to get you all worried. When I suggested not to leave biochem for the summer, it was on the assumption that most of you are undergraduate students, my mistake. So my personal suggestion was to take it before the summer so that you have some free time before medical school starts, and get the requirement out of the way.

In the end, trust Efex on this one...

No problem. I really appreciate that you guys (current Mayo students) stop by to give advice. 🙂 And I realize I am in the minority as a non-trad, but sometimes I guess I forget.

If you've never driven on snow, I would definitely NOT recommend driving from MSP to Rochester. It's a long road through basically nowhere - think gusting winds, etc. If you're coming from SFO, American is probably what you'll take to Rochester. Otherwise, if you want to fly into MSP, just take the shuttle down. You won't really need a car once you get here, pretty much everything you'll be doing is downtown, and if you go out with students, they'll drive.

I don't imagine the student hosts will mind if you have to stay two nights, flights in and out of Rochester are limited and it's not a big deal.

For the folks that will be staying an extra day in Rochester...you can certainly ask the student host if you can stay with them. Most of the hosts will be willing to host you for one more night without a doubt. If this is not feasible the Kahler is an excellent hotel right across from Mayo and has excellent rates (with your Mayo discount).

Driving from MSP to Rochester will *not* be an issue at all. The roads are cleared very early in the morning.

Good luck to all of you!

What's the cheapest way of getting from the airport to downtown?

Cleared, yes...if it just snowed overnight...if it's still snowing...you generally don't want your first time experience to be right before a big interview on a windy stretch of highway where people are driving 70+mph. Not to mention the occasional icy patch and whatnot.

Roads in MN are cleared relatively quickly in the winter, but it can still be sloppy or icy depending on the weather. It most likely won't be a problem, but it's up to you how much you want to chance it. That being said, it's probably much cheaper, easier, and less stressful to take a shuttle than renting a car simply to drive from MSP to your hotel and back.

The airport shuttles will drop you off downtown, they're not bad. Cabs are probably a bit more expensive and harder to find. Really, a student host picking you up would be the cheapest.

I agree that the best bet is to get the shuttle from Minneapolis to Rochester...the problem is that they have set times and if your flight is delayed....you will have to rent a car anyways.

Whatever you do, do not get the last flight/rely on going on the last shuttle to Rochester. I was supposed to fly into Rochester on the last flight, but my flight to Minneapolis was delayed by 3 hours and I ended up spending $200 to rent the last available car in Minneapolis at 1am. Incidentally, DO NOT SPEED if you are driving out there. I was going 72 in a 65 zone and got pulled over.

has anyone received the "you've been ranked" email today? if so, what was ur interview day?

Hey why do you guys think Mayo doesn't get more love from US News? I am in love with Mayo. How can they rank them 23rd in research and 45th in primary care? Then they rank Mayo Clinic as the 2nd best hospital in the nation. I know these rankings are full of crap, but why do you guys think Mayo is so low?

I don't know, but if it keeps Mayo more of a secret from the rankings-obsessed premeds, the better for us!

Does anyone else think Jane in the admissions office is the nicest lady ever?

Yes! She and Cindy are amazing. Anyone heard when the next round of decisions are coming out? Next week maybe?

I have no idea, but when I talked to her she said they were swamped. I guess it's that time of the year for them.

I thought that someone said earlier it would be middle-to-end of November, so I'm just assuming after Thanksgiving for the sake of my sanity

But if anyone has a better idea of when they are planning on accepting more people, I wouldn't object to knowing! (Just so we're clear 😀)

so I just spoke to Cindy

she said that the next comm meeting will be 11/29, you will receive emails the night of the meeting if you are ranked

she said she doesnt know when they will be announcing decisions again

and im boycotting SDN until I get a call or a hold because the mix of anxiety, suspense, and SDN together is poison to my life😛

Just received a rejecting letter today from Mayo.+pity+
I got rejected before I got a secondary! I was really hoping to get farther in the process because I think Mayo would have been a great place for me. Good luck to everyone else. I believe they have the lowest acceptance percentage.

Holy cow, I never thought a medical school could be so awesome. I interviewed yesterday and just fell in love with the place. 🙂

As far as the ranked email- I thought everyone got this around two weeks after the interview regardless of whether or not you're accepted or put on hold.

Yeah, you get the ranked email after they rank you. Later on they make decisions and you get either the hold email or a phone call. Some of us are waiting for their ranked email and the rest of us are waiting to hear if we're still on hold or accepted.

Studying for anatomy, so just going to give you the quickie short answer.... From what I know about the research ranking, a lot of it is based on NIH funding. Mayo's research funding is not mainly from the NIH, so they are ranked lower. And for the rest... i have to agree with XCgirl.

Don't lie- you aren't studying...you're salsa dancing in your living room 😀

if i were to interview on dec 17th... around what time would i receive a response considering the holiday break?

wait...I'm confused.

So everyone gets ranked and no one gets accepted outright? If so, when you get accepted?

I'm pretty sure they accept a few outright after they were ranked in the meeting (think maybe 1-3 per ranking session), but due to the small size of the class they try to be careful how many in case there's some in the later groups that they really like. So a good majority of people are ranked and slowly get accepted in. They're pretty particular about who they pick, I know for the MD/PhDs they actually just took less one year rather than extending more offers. But, MD they'll fill...it's just that when you've only got 42 spots, if you hand out too many acceptances early on then it's more of an issue for later applicates where for the larger med schools, 1 great student in a class of 150 doesn't really make much of a difference.

I read about the process on their webpage, but am still a little confused:

So in the 1st meeting post-interview you get ranked and after that...is your file reviewed every month or are you reviewed once again and then either accepted/put on hold?

I believe the answer is "both." If you're accepted, you're done. If you get put on hold, you're reviewed again at each meeting of the adcom until the class is full.

I'm going crazy waiting for the next acceptance round. I am so in love with the Mayo. I can't even take it anymore. I hope they let us know before the 29th. That is so long away.

I'm flying into MSP and taking the shuttle to Rochester the night before my interview. If all goes according to schedule, I'll be arriving in Rochester around 10:30pm. I was planning on staying with a student host, but now I'm wondering if it would be better to just stay at a hotel, namely the Kahler Grand. Logistically, it would be easier since the shuttle goes directly to there and since I'm staying at that hotel on the night after my interview (so I can explore the area the following morning), I can just leave my luggage there in morning of my interview vs. lugging it around with me. However, I think I would value being able to talk to a student to gain a better idea of what Mayo is like outside of what I've gleaned from their website, especially since Mayo is such a unique school. Since I'm not getting into the area until relatively late and I'll want to get to sleep soon afterwards to be awake the next day, I don't know if I'll even have that much time to chat with my host.
Can anyone who's stayed w/ a student host or who arrived into the area at a relatively late time give me your input on which option you would suggest choosing?

Thanks!

Due to flight delays and having to suddenly rent a car and drive from Minneapolis into Rochester, I didn't get into Rochester until about 2am and I was staying with a student. She really didn't seem to mind (I offered repeatedly to stay in a hotel instead) and was super-nice about it. She had a test the next day and was up studying anyways. I'd suggest staying with a student because even if you don't get a ton of time to chat, it gives you a better feel for the place and they can tell you where to go, etc in the morning. PM me if you have more questions about Mayo. It's an amazing place and I really really loved my time there. In fact, I'd suggest staying an extra night, especially if you're interviewing on a Friday (I had no idea that one could/should do this and the students invited me to go out with them that evening, but I had to catch my flight!).

Just a note (not sure when you're interviewing) but this week is the big anatomy final so there will most likely be lots of partying on Friday night. If you're interviewing on a Friday and plan to walk around the downtown area (if you don't have a car, that's about all you can walk to)...it's fairly dead before 5pm on weekends downtown...so you may see more of the city if you stay with a student. On weekdays, downtown is much more busy and everything will be open.

Does anyone have Jane's email? I wrote it down but can't find and I wanted to send her an update. Thanks.

Are they reviewing files this friday??

Are they reviewing files this friday??

I think that the last time anyone heard anything it was that the committee would be meeting again on the 29th - however, they were unsure if any more appointments would be given out after this meeting or if it was just for ranking people after interviews to be placed in the hold pile. I suppose we'll find out soon, once people start getting emails about being ranked or even getting in at the end of this week/beginning of next!

I'm still waiting on my 'ranked' email. I remember them telling us that the committee met every week or so to rank people and then once a month they send out decisions. I think the break threw off the timing this go around.

Anyone hear when the next round possibly might be yet? I know they said the 29th the committee was meeting, but they might not discuss acceptances.

Got an interview today!! Yayy

Congrats! How were you notified? I'm holding on to the slim hope that they'll interview me. Hey they sent me a secondary and that's an accomplishment for a sub 3.5 GPA.

E-mail at 2:41am this morning!

I didn't think I would get an interview... It seems that they value people with interesting backgrounds. Don't lose hope yet! 🙂 Congrats on the acceptance too.
