I tried doing a search and couldn't find much....can anyone tell me anything about Mayo Scottsdale's program? I believe it's new....did anyone interview there? Any thoughts?

Hmmm just kidding....looks like only Jacksonville and Rochester have residencies...

Scottsdale does have a brand new program. They arent going through ERAS but are going through the match. You have to apply directly, and they are only interviewing for another ten days or so. I was curious about it and called the Mayo GME office and they forwarded me to Julie Schwartz, program coordinator.

[email protected] if interested.

I knew that Scottsdale had a TY. Is that what you are asking about, or have they finally made a full program there now? I talked to a few residents from the Rochester program at the ASA conference and they were under the impression that Scottsdale would have a full program up and running soon.

If it is true that Scottsdale has an anesthesia prog, I sure wish it had been publicized! They didn't mention it in Rochester...

They do have a program there starting in 2007. Please make sure that you ask who will be training the residents. When I was there during medical school there was one resident from Rochester and the people working there gave me the impression that the CRNAs would be doing most of the training. Certainly, as a medical student, I found it very difficult to get one of the anesthesiologists to spend any time with me. Some wanted to and were constantly apologizing to me for not having enough time to teach. So as it stands as of a few months ago, there is one resident (from Rochester), lots of CRNAs, and a few overworked anesthesiologists. Based on my short experience there I decided against applying. However things can change.

scottishlass is exactly right. The Scottsdale clinic is probably 95% CRNA's and the attendings typically monitor 2 - 3 rooms per day. They are taking only 3 residents for 2007 and my impression was that it will most likely be filled by Rochester grads who happened to rotate through anesthesia in Scottsdale as a student. I question just how ready they will be to have a new residency program. I did an elective there a few months ago and the attendings were too busy to spend any time with the medical students, and all the teaching came from any CRNA's willing to teach.

I am not so much disbelieving the above comments so much as the fact that they somehow 'proved" they were ready to host a residency prog if the above is true!

my understanding is that the program is not fully accredited but has provisional or probationary accreditation for 3 years. to be honest i cannot remember the actual descriptive used by the medical staff there but i think it was provisional accreditation. perhaps every new program starts out that way. when i was there the other medical student and i were wondering how the program was going to work. one thing is for sure, they need more anesthesiologists with the time to teach and perhaps that is being worked on.

Arent all brand new programs provisionlly accredited?

The mayo website now has the scottsdale campus listed under their residency programs. 5/36 months are done on off site locations (peds, trauma and OB). I spent a month there and although they have a lot of crna's, most are really great to work with and great teachers. All of the teaching will be done by MDA's and previous posts are true about covering > than one room, but once they start their residency they will only cover 1 to 2 rooms max. They do liver, heart, kidney and pancreas transplants and the staff there are all great teachers. All call is from home since they are not a trauma hospital. Sweet program, although it is new. I am taking the risk of going to a new program, its #1 on my rank list. 👍

Yeah i was browsing FREIDA for the millionth time and noticed them listed, no real info yet. Seems very tempting, but It would take a leap of faith to start at a new progrma imo. Still worth investigating.
