Mayo?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I got my invitation this week, so there's still time.

I just spent about an hour cut and pasting mayo interview questions from the link above.

On the second-to-last file I found some joker with a photographic memory had written down every question, in order, perfectly matching the questions I had been collecting laboriously one and two at a time 😱 . So no one has to repeat the experience, here is the list:

This was an initial phone screen replacing the supplemental application. The following questions were asked (to my recollection): Why do you want to be a Mayo Graduate? Have you ever turned a difficult situation into a positive? Is it important for a doctor to have humility? On a scale of 1 to 10, how humble are you? Is it important for doctors to practice what they preach? How do you stay healthy? Have you ever started a new business? Have you ever improved a business or organization? How? Do you encourage others to work harder? Would you spend more time with a difficult patient or one that follows orders? How would you handle a patient that does not want to follow your orders? Would you ever give up hope on a patient? How do you feel about the statement 'anytime someone says they are in pain, then they are in pain... no matter if it's phsycial or imagined? Do you think about your own mortality? What do you think about it? Do you ever spend time alone? What do you think about when you're alone? Do you like working on a project or being responsible for others in a project? Have you ever been a patient? What did you learn? When making a decision, do you consider all possible negative outcomes? Give an example... What makes you most satisfied about yourself? What grades do you get? Would you say you spend a lot of your time working? Are you a perfectionist? explain... Do you expect perfection from others? What's one of your strongest characteristics? What is your history with smoking, drugs, and alcohol? Is there anything else you'd like to add? Do you think this interview described you well?)

Last night when I got home, I opened my thin letter from Mayo. I told myself that I would not open it, but I couldn't resist. It was actually very nice, very complimentary for a rejection letter. Much nicer than the other two rejection letters that I got last week.

So, has anyone ever heard of an applicant getting drawn back into the applicant pool after getting a post-phone interview thin letter? I know, I am dreaming ... but I'm still in love with Mayo, and probably not thinking clearly at all. I need to pick up the pieces and try to pull myself together ... 😍

Someone earlier on this tread posted info saying that peeps were being accepted, but I haven't seen anyone that says they have (although i do realize that not everyone uses/posts to sdn.) Anyone heard anymore? Anyway, a little birdie says the adcom is meeting again on Dec 1st to look at more files (post-interview). Good luck to everyone in that boat...(believe me I'm praying hard.) 🙂

I was interviewing at Mayo on Oct 31. Jane was all excited because she had called (that day) the two people who were accepted. The adcom meets at the end/begining of each month to look over everyone's info. It is quite possible that that date will be Dec. 1. But according to what Jane said, they will probably only accept 2 maybe 3 others, and rank/hold the rest.... She warned it is a long process...

Does anyone know if they actually play the tape recording at their meetings or if they're looking at transcriptions? I can't imagine they'd be able to get through many applicants if they had to listen to the entire tape...

From what I've heard, you're scored right then and there during your phone interview, te committee then looks at your LOR'S in addition to your score and decides if you will be invited for an in-person interview of not...... that's what I heard through the grapevine, so don't hold me to it.

You mean by the phone interviewer? I ws under the impression the person asking the questions was office staff. I had just assumed that the entire committee would debate the answers. I suppose if true, it'd make it more time-effective. I wonder if adcom members are listening in to the interview while it is being conducted...
I think I remember somebody on this thread saying that one of the Dean's goes through each phone interview. So it is only one person, and then based on that and your LORs this person decides whether to invite you for a phone interview.

Ok...a little research...this is from the Mayo website:
"The Associate Dean of Student Affairs reviews individual scores from the standardized telephone interview and identifies qualified applicants for on-campus interviews in Rochester, Minnesota. "

Jane said at the interview that the adcom has not heard any of the phone interviews so don't be affraid to repeat yourself during the in-person interview

What percentage of people interviewed on site get accepted? They have about 40 spots. Is Mayo non rolling?

Mayo is rolling. They have 34 (I think) spots for regular MD admissions. They accept about twice this number. I'm not sure how many people are getting onsite interviews this year -- it sounds like they really bumped up the number of phone interviews, but I don't know if that's translating into more onsites or not. In the past I think it has been about a 25% acceptance rate post-onsite.

Good luck!

I am surprised that they accept that many people to fill their class. I mean...it's Mayo! I would expect it to be everyone's top choice, but maybe that is just my view and some people would rather not live in Minnesota for four years. 🙂

they have 44 spots per class and 15 (plus or minus one) were taken off the waitlist last year. Usually 20% or so come from MN, with another 10% each to AZ and FL residents. Last year there were 5 people that were originally from Rochester that were accepted, so I have my fingers crossed 🙂.

by the way, if the cheap tuition wasn't enough, being a Mayo med student allows you to get your JD for free at ASU and has an abroad scholarship that pays for 3 months away, plus travel, to anywhere in the world.

Most Mayo classes have 42 students: 2 DDSs studying to be oral-maxillofacial surgeons, ~6 MD/PhDs, and 34 MDs. Those numbers vary though - my class started with 8 MD/PhDs, and this year's class had 5.

Hey, I just got an email from Mayo. Basically it read thank you for interviewing, the adcom met and you have been ranked. We will update you as things progress....

(and by just i mean an hour ago)

I got the same email 🙂 Well...nothing we can do now but hope and pray!

Anyone have an idea of the difference between "hold" and "ranked"?

it means that they reviewed your file and basically ranked you against the other applicants and then once or twice a month the committee meets and accepts some people from the top.

why wouldn't everyone be ranked..why are some people on "hold"...i'm over analyzing at this point

everyone is ranked. it just means that they have gone over your whole file and assigned you some number. People that are put on hold have something wrong with their application, I think.

hmmm.. its been exaclty 41 days since my phone interview, and no word
thats about double the 3 week "estimated" time

should i call again?

i dont want to be annoying

no, i mean, i'm not saying to not call, but don't worry too much if you haven't heard yet...i didn't hear anything until way longer than they told me I would, and they're probably just getting more and more backed up as time goes on...esp with the holidays coming up....but go ahead and call if it makes you feel better

Well, it looks like I am out of this club. Just got my rejection (post phone interview) from Mayo yesterday. Now I need to find a new top choice. I must say, though, that the letter was very polite and kind considering the rejection news it contained. I would expect nothing less from a place like Mayo. Best of luck to everyone else. :luck:

You're going to do awesome SuzieQ; don't let Mayo's news get you down!

Lexy10 - I believe you interviewed with me on Oct. 31? We had an "interesting" interview group (and by interesting, I'm referring to one certain, athletic individual!)

Got a Mayo email a few days ago saying thanks for interviewing, you've been ranked, blah blah blah. Guess now it's all about waiting

Wasn't that just unreal? I mean, there's brown-nosing, then serious brown-nosng, than this guy! In the end, I actually was embarrassed for him! Poor guy! Definitely don't think Mayo is his best "fit!"

How have your other interviews been going? Wasn't Mayo simply incredible? I felt like I was walking through a palace in those facilities? Sheesh! And only 12 grand a year tuition!? Sheesh I'm sold!

No kidding! I was actually cringing towards the end of the day. I just wanted to tell him to stop talking!
Totally amazing. I would be so happy to go there. The people were crazy nice..after you all left I got a sneak preview of the sim-labs..they are insane!!!
the place, breathtaking...all that amazing art, not the corprate stuff most institutions hang on their walls either!
All my interviews went really well. Unfortunately I think of them, Mayo went the least well. for some inexplicable reason I got really nervous witht he second interviewer, tripped over my words, etc. Oh well...just cross my fingers I guess...
And you, How did the rest of your interviews go? As I see it, we both need to be accepted to Mayo, you were great company on Halloween!

Phew. For a while, I was worried you guys were talking about me! (I think I was one of the tour guides that day, and I'm always paranoid that I did something horribly weird unconsciously) 🙂 Anyways, good luck to you guys and congrats on being ranked!!!

Well if you were one of the tour guides you were great! In fact everyone I met who was part of Mayo was simply wonderful. Thank you for taking the time to show us around!

whoops, duplicate post!

Well, I don't really get to pick which days I give tours (it's pretty popular, and there's tons of students who want to do them). But, if you have any questions, you're welcome to PM me!

You know Mayo is a good school when people get this reaction just from getting an interview! Congratulations.

Have any SDN'ers been accepted to Mayo yet???

anyone hear anything after the 12/1 meeting?

gosh, when they said it would be a long process they really meant it. do they only accept a couple of people (3-4) each month?
