MCPHS (Worcester)--Fall 2010

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
manutdmax, would you mind telling us why this school is so bad? some members just state that this school is terrible but don't give a legitimate reason on why MCPHS is horrible.

dude the school itself is expensive and the staff are not welling to help you at all...i have 4 friends applied to this school this year and last year and the admission counslers did not help help them..they only communicate by mail which is stupid..plus their campus is small and operated by big screens..its very bad school ..their staff dont help you and if u call them they will take forever to answer and if u leave a voice mail, good luck if they reply back to you..i know ask me 😡

Just FYI, MCPHS places a heavy emphasis on GPA. You need at least a 3.4 (although I've heard of lower being considered - rarely though) to even be considered for an interview. Once you're granted an interview, you have about an 80% chance at getting accepted. So for those who got an interview, your chances are great!!

It's not that bad of a school either. Sure, the big room with a big projector in a small office-looking building may look intimidating. However, you're in no position to judge the curriculum. About 90% of students pass the NAPLEX on the first try. If your goal is to become a pharmacist, this school will get you there!!

I've been told staff/professors are always available for students with questions. I guess if you don't try, you won't be able to make it. However, those who are granted an interview have pretty much passed the biggest hurdle and are highly capable of handling the 3-year curriculum. So stop trying to give a bad impression of the school because they don't answer any of your questions. You can't expect "perfect customer service," because all pharmacy schools are busy. So far every question I've asked have been answered clearly - I communicate with MCPHS quite frequently. The staff is very friendly...Point is to keep trying...and leave moderately detailed voicemails!! (can't stress that enough) It'll help you in the long-run, especially you want to attend this specific school.

So yeah, don't be so rash or dismissive because you feel they're turning away from you. Try to find out what it is and experience it for yourself - not from the opinion of others. And really, how reliable are opinions these days? All I know is, MCPHS has been accredited for a long time...For gosh sakes, it's the 2nd oldest pharmacy in the nation. They already have a good reputation. I don't know why people are trying to ruin it for others.

it seems with all respect that you do not know what are you talking about..let me remind you okay ..I have paid Pharmcas fees for this school..and oh yeah..alot of other people are going to pay supplemental application fees..so do not tell me they are busy answering my questions..it is their JOB as counselors and admissions. every school is proud to have the highest rate for passing the NAPLEX so it is not just this school that If you dont get in you wont be a PHARMACIST..I have friends study at this school and they TOLD ME THAT THEY BARELY SEE THEIR PROFESSORS OUTSIDE THE CLASS ROOM AND EVERYTHING IS DONE BY EMAIL..OKAY ,,this school is bad and with their 3 year curriculum they are not worth it ..I would go to another school with 3 year such as MWU GLENDALE

LOL wait until MCPHS-Worcester students come here. You're not going to like what they write. And yes, professors have to be physically available to their students (at MCPHS). Most students who e-mail prefer to do that...that's their own choice. You're silly to bring this up. A lot of people feel uncomfortable at this school because the learning isn't very traditional, but hey...if you want traditional, you can get that here. You have to do this for yourself as an independent person for extra help. c'mon it's professional school folks; it's not supposed to be easy. No offense, your friends are probably the lazy type. Don't rely on their opinion. Apply elsewhere if you feel this place isn't worth it. Don't ruin it for others. Shopping for schools is not the same as shopping for a computer...

I do know what I'm talking about. Two of my family members graduated from MCPHS-Worcester. I even have a friend who goes there now and says that the teachers are wonderful and helpful. From what they all tell me, they strongly recommend this program. They really do care here. I'm just saying man...if you don't like it, get out!

LOL welcome to professional school applications. All schools are like this. Hello, you wake up!!! Call them up again and leave a voicemail next time.

If your friends are doing so well, why are they complaining? Chea!

Yes, it's a private school. However, it's probably one of the least expensive private schools out there. LECOM is the cheapest one.

I mean, if you hate this school so much, why are you even applying here? You're clearly confused, or it seems that way to me.

For those who already got accepted- Did they tell you that it would take about 3 weeks to respond? It seems that they normally take about a week, but I interviewed this week and they told me that I should hear from them in about 3 weeks....

i knew this after i applied to this school this year, and to let you know, I have called many many times and left voice mail but nothing from them. anyway good luck to everyone but the bottom line not only me, but many people here and outside SDN experienced bad things with this school

Well, I can't say the same. That's some bad luck on your part. If you're not comfortable applying here, then don't even waste your time arguing people based on your friend's opinions. I'm certainly not convinced by them. I recognize that every person has their own opinions: None of us are correct. However, dissing a school isn't going to help anything; it's quite childish if you ask me. Stop complaining and move on! If you're willing to put in the work, you'll make it out alive!

Yes, yes, wait until the Worcester students get to this forum...here we are!!! (Well, ok, here I am).

After a long couple weeks of exams I am finally able to surf SDN a bit while waiting for my pumpkin pie to bake. And what do I find? No surprise...MCPHS-bashing. This phrase should be put into the dictionary, because it seems like there are ridiculous amounts of people out there everywhere who bash the heck out of this school. I have no idea why.

Thank goodness a hundred times over that I didn't listen to these people and that I applied and got in. And yes, correspondence was via email for the admissions process. Do you know how many applications they're sifting through right now? And with the holidays coming up? Have patience and respect...and for goodness sake, use real grammar and punctuation. I know you can, you're applying to professional school. Act like it.

The professors are amazing and helpful. There are student councilors, academic support, fellow students who feel like a team...what more could you want? I'm doing fine. In fact, I'm doing really really well. Now, granted, I'm a first year just finishing up the first semester, so I haven't gotten to the crazy hard stuff yet, but this isn't easy either. I study at least 10+ hours for each exam (not each day...I split it up) and don't go out drinking with my buddies. I find time to watch plenty of TV and relax because I manage my time well. As long as you're willing to hunker down and study and put yourself really into it, then you'll do amazing here. The professors are unhelpful ONLY if you give them attitude or don't care. Would you help a student talking smack about you to your face? No. They help me because I respect them and want to be helped. They help me in person or through email, whichever I prefer.

It's only a bad school if you expect everything to be handed to you on a silver platter. Wake up and smell the professional school. They tell you the expectations the first days of orientation and they haven't deviated yet.

If anyone wants any details about the Worcester program, feel free to message me. I might take a wee bit to get back to you because finals are coming up, but I'll be more than happy to help out.

:luck::luck::luck: to everyone!!

I was invited for the interview on Nov. 18 and received the acceptance letter one week later 😀 .... good luck to everyone!!

mind my grammar. i write when it counts! 😉

anyway, I definitely agree. professional school is not supposed to be easy. you're going to have to upgrade your game! respect for your recent success. i have high hopes for you to succeed. Also, good luck with the all-nighters you're going to have to pull during 2nd year!! It's brutal but I'm sure it's worth it in the end.

Everyone I know that has finished from MCPHS-W felt that the hardwork they put in definitely translated into their success as pharmacists. Of course, they felt like crap when things got tougher. However, when looking at the overall picture, they felt that they were prepared & equipped for their career as pharmacists. Staff/professors were very helpful though..that's the part they keep stressing...especially when things got tougher.

Yes. My interviewer told me it would take about 4 to 6 weeks to get a response. However, I got my acceptance in 9 days. Don't worry too much. You will hear good news!

quick question for those that were interviewed: is the interview open file or close file?

i can't believe i'm going to worcester next week, EXCITED! 🙂

kern07- I don't know if the interviewer had access to my entire file, but they had all my info on what colleges I attended and the grades I received in all my pre-reqs. Have fun in worcester, and enjoy the tour- the facilities are AMAZING!

Hi guys,
I have a question. On pharmcas (in school information) I saw that for the supplemental application at MCPHS (Worcester Campus), if you apply before Dec.01, you don't have to pay for a fee. But if you apply after that day, you have to pay $40, is that correct??? Because I apply at the end of Sept., so when submitting my suppl. application, I chose fee waiver. I don't know if that is the main problem that until now, I still haven't received any mail about my completed application or interview invitation. Can anyone come up w/ an idea about that? Thanks!!!

Lucie Lee- I also picked "fee waiver" when I submitted before Dec 1st, and I was told that is the correct thing to do. I suggest emailing admissions to make sure they have all of your info, being it has been 2 months since you completed your application. Also, check the "supplemental materials" section on PharmCAS and see if MCPHS has updated anything on there.

Lucie Lee- I submitted my supplemental at the end of sept, and MCPHS received my PharmCAS the first week of october. I received an interview invite the end of october, and interviewed earlier this week. Good luck!

for those who got accepted, may you share your stats? do all of you have BA or BS ? I need 3 more prerequesites which is general bio 2, abnormal psy and cal 2 which Im taking in the spring. is that bad that they keep my appilcation?

I have an interview at MCPHS-Worcester next saturday. Any tips. Does anyone know what percentage of interviewees they actually accept?

STATS
Overall GPA 3.2
Science 3.3
BS Chemistry
MS Chemistry (expected May 2010)
Touro- Interview
MCPHS-INTERVIEW

noexperience09, you should be fine. unless you totally botch your interview, you'll be okay.

i just came back from my interview, and i'm sitting at an airport waiting to go home. what a wonderful school! the city is developing, which is good and bad, depending on how one looks at it.

i currently don't have a bachelor's, nor am i going to receive one next spring. i'll keep you posted on my status when i hear back from them.

:luck:

Ah the "All Nighter"! Yanno, I have never in my life pulled one of those...sleep is WAY too important! I prefer to spread my studying out over a few days and go to bed at 10pm than cram it all in the night before. The people (in 1st year) who pull all-nighters? I suspect they hang out with friends and do nothing until the last minute. I can't speak for P2 since I'm not there yet...I hope I never see the sun rise unless it's a Friday night and I'm playing LEGO Star Wars! :meanie:

it been more than a month after submitting my supplemental application and i have yet to receive a response regarding my application. i been informed by other prepharmacy students that if i don't hear from them in the next few weeks then i will not be offered an interview.

i have a very high gpa and i have a degree as well. i noticed those who had interviews had many years of extracurricular activities. i have a lot of extracurricular activities but most are no related to the health care field.

Why don't you contact the school to see what's going on? I think it'll be the better way. Good luck!

My application was on hold for the Fall grades also but I'm only missing one elective class. What I got from people who are interviewed is either they had degrees or completed all their requirement classes. I guess for one like us, none degree and incompleted requirement, school will hold our appls until they get updated the Fall grades.

I'll be having my interview at the end of this week. Do you guys have any suggestions as to places to check out in Worcester the day before my interview just for fun? Or would I need to go to Boston to see anything exciting?

Anyone knows what is the average GPA for accepted students for the last incoming class? I know that MCPHS-Worcester accepts students with a degree. Thanks!

Yeah, Boston is where you want to be for fun. Worcester is ehh...a city with less attractions, although it's not a bad place to live/study.

I just got an interview invitation. Does anyone know how many people they interview? My GPA is on the lower side (3.2) and I'm debating as to what my chances are and if I should go to the interview. Can someone help me out!

You definitely want to attend the interview. My GPA is higher than yours only by 0.2. If you ever worry about the interview process, don't be. It was very relaxed, and the faculty asked some of the basic questions, such as why pharmacy and how to prepare for a 3-year program. Well at least that was my case. I received the acceptance letter one week later. There were about 4 or 5 people who also had the interview on the same day as mine, but they interviewed people individually. Overall, it was a very comfortable environment. Best of luck!!

Hi.

Do you guys/girls know what the word limit is for the supplemental application?

First question asked why you wish to attend the Pharmacy program, etc.

Were the word count limits all the same for all the questions?

Thank you!

I don't think there is a limit to the number of words for each question. As long as you cover everything that the question asks for, then you should be fine. My answers were at least half a page (single-spaced) for each question, and I was invited for an interview. Best of luck!!!

Hi, guys! I am a P1 at MCPHS-Worcester campus. I love my program. I have been on SDN for 3 yrs now, and the posts on here did not give me any true in sight on how my school operates. Trust me most of these rumors do not tell the half of what our program is all about. I would not pay attention to any of these rumors. If you get accepted, you will be fine. Of course, there is a lot of studying--hint-- accelerated. Just go ahead now and study the top 200 drugs (brand & generic) before school start, send in all your required documents on time, and just relax. I love the school and my classmates. Our school is very diversed. My classmates are from all over the world. This is great. It has helped me to become a more open-minded and well-rounded individual. The faculty and staff here will do everything everything they can to keep you here, and on track. It is a lot of us but trust me the teachers know exactly who you are. The dean is really nice, so if you ever get to meet him talk to him. You must maintain a 2.2 gpa the first year. If you have any questions feel free to email me. For those with interviews ask me any questions, but I can not tell you the essay questions that I was asked during my interview. But anything else I will address to my best knowledge.

Majority of all the faculty and staff are great here. All of our teachers are right there in the classrooms with us (Worcester campus cant speak for the NH campus). This semester only one of our classes was taught through distant learning in NH which is our other campus. I do not know much about that campus though. Again you can not go by rumors about what others say about any pharmacy school. Do your research. Talk to more than one student and ask your interviewers questions. Before the interview try to think of questions to ask them beyond the typical things such as what is the pass right on the naplex. You can get that on-line. Ask about more detail questions, you know stuff that can not be easily answered on the internet.

I would not worry to much you guys about gps. Even though most schools say the min. gpa is this--still apply. I can not speak for any other schools. But at MCPHS, admissions is looking for well-rounded individuals. GPAs do not tell everything about someone. So, just come forth with a passion to do pharmacy--not just for the money! Also, having volunteering and work experience may make up for that low gpa.

it seems with all respect that you do not know what are you talking about..let me remind you okay ..I have paid Pharmcas fees for this school..and oh yeah..alot of other people are going to pay supplemental application fees..so do not tell me they are busy answering my questions..it is their JOB as counselors and admissions. every school is proud to have the highest rate for passing the NAPLEX so it is not just this school that If you dont get in you wont be a PHARMACIST..I have friends study at this school and they TOLD ME THAT THEY BARELY SEE THEIR PROFESSORS OUTSIDE THE CLASS ROOM AND EVERYTHING IS DONE BY EMAIL..OKAY ,,this school is bad and with their 3 year curriculum they are not worth it ..I would go to another school with 3 year such as MWU GLENDALE

This is so not true. Your friends are not telling you half of what our school is about. Trust me it is not easy and the stuff that your friends need to tell you--you have not stated it at all. The things people say about MCPHS is so funny. I am here and I can tell you that it is not easy. You have a lot to do--hint accelerated program. It's not your typical 4 years. But, if you use your sources wisely before school start, talk to the staff here. Brian is great. The dean is very laid back. It took me a while just to really remember that he was the dean. He act like a faculty member. One thing a lot of pre-pharmacy students (I did it most of my classmates did it) we do not get the facts. This is not just for MCPHS this is for all schools. The reason is because majority of pharmacy schools course work is totally different. This make it hard to decide which is best for you. For instance pharmacy law is taught at our school the 1st semester but at another school it may be taught during the 3rd year. So, get the facts. Stop thinking about the basics. You can get the basics from the internet.

I am not here to battle with anyone. I am just trying to help you guys to understand that you have to learn to go beyond the typical and research hard about schools before you go to them. I think that everyone on SDN should have the right to voice their opinion--good or bad. But, it is always a plus to get your sources from more than 1 person.

dude..helloooo..how much are you paying for this school..why you think for one minute that they are not suppose to giive you service..they shouldddd...you are paying money and alot of money..its private school..and no, my friends are very smart and they have 3.6 gpa at mcphs, it is not a traditional school and the staff doesnt help you..i tried myself with 2 of my friends applied this year..we email and voice mail and we get nothing except for stupid letters in the mail that comes late..for the money you are paying them you should a better service..

manutdmax, you in some where else why do you even care. You got in that's a great achievement. You will do fine. Good luck to you.

quick question for those that were interviewed: is the interview open file or close file?

i can't believe i'm going to worcester next week, EXCITED! 🙂

opened or closed what does it matter. you just come prepared and with questions.

for those who got accepted, may you share your stats? do all of you have BA or BS ? I got the confirmation letter and it said the committee will hold my application until they get my fall 2009 grades. I am a junior and this fall Im taking orgo 2, macro and poli sci, and physical chem. I need 3 more prerequesites which is general bio 2, abnormal psy and cal 2 which Im taking in the spring. is that bad that they keep my appilcation?

I remember I use to ask about others about their stats. Who cares. You all just need to worry about your stats and prepare for the interview. Pharmacy experience and work experience is always a plus esp. when your gpa is below or at the min. gpa.

:meanie:

There is no 1 way street of how to study for tests at MCPHS. That is something that you will have to learn to do your self. We have 2 staff members Donte and Liz who are great at that. What they do is they will lesson to what you have to say, then based on what you say to them they give you like 5< different ways to study. During the semester, you have to make appointments with them. But, I always just drop by whenever. I started going to them day one. For those that come here, make sure you go to Liz or Donte both of them are great when it comes to helping you learn to study. Also, it helps to talk with your professor. Our biochemistry teacher is the best. He sat with me for 40 minutes for my 1st exam. Trust me most of you think you already know how to study for exams but when you get into pharmacy school any school those old study habits are ancient history. I study every day now with my own techniques. The hours depend on how I feel and the date of that particular tests.

it been more than a month after submitting my supplemental application and i have yet to receive a response regarding my application. i been informed by other prepharmacy students that if i don't hear from them in the next few weeks then i will not be offered an interview.

Do not sit around waiting on what others say. Call pharmcas, the school and ask staff questions. Use SDN as a tool to keep up with things like if somebody else got their acceptance letters, if someone else had a good or bad experience, or received waiting list letters. You guys do not have to be enemies, but keep each other inform. You guys got to learn to go for things your self and not wait on the next person because most of the time people who are interviewing with you will only tell you a part of what was really said or happened. Learn to go for things yourself.

U are right I think they tend to interview students with a lot of experience. I probably got an interview because of my 2 yrs research experience, and extracurricular activities, even though my GPA is a little lower than their average.

That's totally not true. Applying to pharmacy school any school is getting the application on time near or far from the deadline and being lucky to get a good interviewer. You can have a 3.45 with no experience, get a interview, and get accepted. There is no definite framework on how this work. So stop puzzling your brains about it. You guys stop trying to figure it out all. Just do your part, prepare for the interview, and chill out. I remember the feeling. Trust me it is really not hard to get an interview. But, it is what you do at the interview that count most.

I don't think there is a limit to the number of words for each question. As long as you cover everything that the question asks for, then you should be fine. My answers were at least half a page (single-spaced) for each question, and I was invited for an interview. Best of luck!!!

I remember last year I was trying to think about this same thing. Laughing so hard. Relax. Just know why you want pharmacy what drives you. Most important think beyond retail pharmacy. Do not try to focus on filling up a page. You guys are killing me.
