MCW Class of 2010, Part 3

Are you one of those "oh, i never study, I'm such a slacker" med students?

More like one of those "I studied my ass off all week to get this material down and now my brain is liquefied and I just might scream if I have to cram another potentially testable, but probably not on the test, piece of minutiae in my head or deal with the vague inquiries of an unnamed M1 trying to lump me in with a marginalized and despised group of med students" med student.

...who mysteriously end up choosing between dermatology and radiology.

Are you a runner?

No, I injure myself in stupid ways that most people don't expect you to get injuries. Aka... I'm a clutz.

eg. I jumped off a wall --> stress fracture of said sesamoid. Didn't tell my dad that it hurt because he wouldn't believe me, and it got worse.

Got gamekeeper's thumb playing volleyball. The most common way to get that is by skiing and falling while holding the pole.

Got pre-patellar bursitis because stupid people were sitting at the bottom of the ski lift, and I swerved to avoid them and hit my knee on ice. All they said was "Oh, maybe we shouldn't sit here." That was on the ski trip.

What is the best vodka or tequila you've ever tasted?

If you fall while holding the ski pole does that shove your thumb towards your wrist? How'd you do that with a volleyball?

The ball hit my thumb at a funny angle while trying to set and hyperextended it. That's what I get for being the only sober player that day. They don't name the ligament in Netter's at all, which sucked for me attempting to look it up before I went into my appointment. It confused me for a while because there are several "ulnar collateral ligaments."

Basically, with the ski pole and volleyball... extreme abduction of the thumb. The ski pole prevents your thumb from adducting.

haha. you nerd!

haha. you nerd!

That's a given:
a) I'm in med school.
b) I want to go into ortho.
c) my dad was attempting to explain what I probably did, and I wanted to figure out my chances of having to have surgery.
d) I wanted to see if I could do the manipulative test on myself to see if I really had gamekeeper's. If I couldn't do it on myself, I had to have my friend check my thumb for me, since he sent the ball to me funkily.
e) I just made a list of why I'm a nerd.

That be me as well.

I keep saying that I'm gonna start studying earlier than 2-3 days before the exam, but once again, it was all talk and no action. I wonder what my grades could be if I was a good student. 😳

Everyone could study as much as I do and be just as neurotic and burnt out as I am at this very moment.

This sucks. Bedtime! Gotta be at school shortly after 6.

I'm no where near as prepared for this test as I was for leukemia et al.

ha. I wish I could do that. I studied my ass off for a mediocre performance in biochem.

I would like to say that I, too, studied my ass off for my mediocre biochem performance, but my roommate showed me what studying your ass off REALLY looks like, and she rocked the biochem HOUSE.

i never, EVER rocked the biochem house, and I was quite happy to not even bother trying.

Yeah, I'm having trouble finding my balance there. I could have a LITTLE LESS life and study a LITTLE BIT more and get a LITTLE better grades. But I wouldn't be willing to study a LOT MORE and have A LOT LESS life, not even if little angels would come down and cooked my breakfast every time I honored an exam. I have a good life, and decent grades (which is not to say I'm partying all the time or that I have no stress, believe me). But there's still that little voice telling me I could do JUST A BIT more.

Sigh.

who's your roomie? I didn't think you lived with another student.

She isn't starving herself. She's just a really hard working student!

grrrr. fricking rain. I went outside a few minutes ago, and it was fine, so I jumped on my bike to start to school, rode a couple blocks, and suddenly the rain kicked up a notch. No thanks. Biochem's not that important....

I love it when ANGEL fails to work. I start leaking info that I've crammed into my brain shortly before the test is SUPPOSED to start. This is the second freakin' time this happened. Oh well.

Today, biochem REALLY wasn't that important. The usual projector is broken so we had to use one that flickered throughout 3 hours of lecture.

It went down at ~2:30am. You'd think they'd be able to get it figured out by 9am.

I was not a happy camper. I was gonna do all the old exams this morning. 😡 Eh, probably wouldn't have helped anyway.

It's funny how the pathology docs can make me question ALL of my knowledge on a particularly subject.

i had no clue there was going to be anything about the cardiovascular system on that test....ouch.

Well, I'm happy to report that my not-going-to-class strategy paid off. I shoulda taken Xandie's advice at the beginning of the year. I'm hereby sworn off Pathology lecture for the rest of the year (although I might go to Hargarten's lecture on Thursday 'cause he's cool.) I think with my new policy I actually spent more time studying path than I would have if I had gone to lecture, which couldn't have hurt.

Congratulations...another falls to the Dark Side. I'm happy to say that in my first full block of skipped path lectures that I was right on my typical exam score. Now if I could just get off my ass and study some micro, I might just pass that exam too.

Ya wanna do an exam trade tomorrow? I bring the psych/med ethics, you bring the micro?

That sounds delightful. I am most assuredly in. Last full Touchy Feely Tuesday tomorrow folks! Time to celebrate.

I heard an unsubstantiated rumor today that an M1 is being kicked out of school. Anyone know anything about this?
I heard more unsubstantiated claims that didn't amount to anything specific today. Anybody out there willing to unsubstantiate this?

I'll pass you a note during recess.

I smell osteoporosis and heart disease!

Why do I get the feeling that the micro virology test could be 50 questions that look like this:

Respiratory Syncytial Virus (repeat for 49 other viruses) has a ____ genome.
A). + ssRNA
B). - ssRNA
C). dsRNA
D). + ssDNA
E). - ssDNA
F). dsDNA

Maybe they'll mix it up and ask which viruses have G proteins, S proteins, M proteins, or whatever other alphabet soup proteins are out there. I never thought I would prefer oddly named molecules, but for chrissake, those microbiologists could try being a little more creative so a poor sap like me could make up some memory tricks.

And everyone thought I was crazy last fall when I stopped showing up. HAH!

Although, I do feel compelled to go to Dr. McBride's lecture on Nov 21. It is the same McBride, right?

Oh, and Funk, I think you're dead on about the micro exam. Path went fine today, but micro could be another story. And how the hell do you study for an ethics exam?
