Which of the orientation activities would you guys recommend - the zoo or the art museum? also if your cpr time allows you to attend both (1 each day) would you recommend going to both or just choosing one? Thanks!

do you like animals, or do you like art? do you like a more downtown ritzy feel, or do you prefer zebra butts?

would you enjoy quietly roaming the halls of culture, or eating overpriced cheeseburgers and getting a freshly molded plastic gorilla from the machine?


These are just a FEW of the questions you need to ask yourself.

You could also always take the time to yourself, I don't think you're obligated to go to either.

I had the opportunity to do both, but I just went to the zoo. I don't like art museums.

I used the time the extra day when I could've been at the art museum to set up my apartment.

Sure you can! The Art museum is a beautiful building with a mediocre collection inside it. The zoo is a zoo. I did do the zoo thing, but just to bond with people.

The people I bonded with did not turn out to be my good friends. Funny thing.

I did both, and I would do both again. If they have pre-orientation stuff I highly recommend that. My closest friends here are still the ones I met during preorientation. Probably helps that one of our activities was the Lakefront Brewery tour. I can pick 'em.

Why does it say that the insurance rates are all around 200$ a month for health insurance? Why would I sign up for the schools health insurance rather than keeping my insurance which isn't that bad for 45$ a month?

I thought the student health insurance would be 470$ for the whole years coverage as they quoted on the budget for fin aid.

The $470 is additional expenses like copays, drugs, etc. Not insurance, it's expensivo.

I can't be covered by my parents and I don't have a spouse. So there is no way around it? I have to sign up for the Humana? Or can I just continue my own personal insurance plan that I have right now.

Damn. That is like $2,400 for a whole year of health insurance coverage. How can they not put that into the budget? Am I missing something here or does that sound right to you all? That sounds about right. They put it into the budget when you meet with them during/after orientation. You'll set up your fin aid meeting at orientation, and then they'll add your plan into the budget. The rest of the years, they'll assume you're keeping the same plan.

I was going to switch to the PPO for the benefit of traveling, but I can just pay $10/month for travel insurance, and it basically does the same.

I didn't think about the whole issue of being out of the Milwaukee area at certain points of the year. Seems like this would rule out the HMO, since I wouldn't be covered when I'm back in Cali, but the PPO is super expensive. I think I'd like to go with the relatively least expensive plan, the Coverage First PPO.

Is that the cheapest one? Probably good.

I always get the cheapest and most expensive mixed up because the letters are similar. I'm still sticking with HMO; best Rx plan.

I only get the PPO because I have lupus and need the coverage when I travel back to MN (still see some doctors there) and Florida. If you don't have major medical problems I would definately suggest the HMO.

Probably not, because they recertify us again right before 3rd year, and not before, so you'll be off-cycle with the rest of the class. But go ahead and ask.

Maybe if it's your wedding, but otherwise I wouldn't be surprised if they weren't willing to budge.

There are 2 groups of MIM/pbl-interview; unless that's changed. Maybe you'll start with interviewing/pbl and have MIM in the spring. Do not miss those classes, they take attendance.

I doubt they're going to have that schedule made up yet. The class isn't even technically finalized yet, and that stuff doesn't start until sometime in September.

It's better to wait until you have a chance to meet your Big Sib and see if he/she has any books they will lend you. After that, it's better to get used books from Amazon or abebooks.com and don't worry about getting a brand new edition if it just came out...chances are you'll be fine with a cheaper used version of the old one.

There is no hurry. You can use the copies on reserve in the library until you decide which ones you actually want to buy, and then you can get them from your big sib or campusi.com and save some money. The only thing I'd pick up *if* you get a really good price is a Netter Atlas of Human Anatomy, because the vast majority of M1 students do use that one.

The bookstore will not run out of your textbooks. Most people don't buy them there. Many of them are not worth owning. Relax. Slow down. Use the library. Talk to your big sib. All will be well.

I had the same idea for funding a scholarship for pre-meds. It was going to be based on the applicant's refusal to do all of the BS extracurriculars and leadership roles that people think they need to get into med school.

Hey, I could've gotten that scholarship, since I didn't plan on going to med school until right before graduation. I was in groups I found fun and my friends were in.

The UC schools have a Haole from Hawai'i scholarship. I forget the actual name and time spent in HI qualifications, but it specifically says a white person from Hawai'i, and I think they're supposed to have gone to a public school.

DSL is 20, but you may have to have a landline in which case it's no better.

Registration is the first day of orientation. All your classes are already selected for you and you will be enrolled in them automagically, so it's not the chaotic process you may remember from undergrad. If you are late on the first day, they will fine you, and if you are very late, they will give away your seat to someone on the waiting list. So DON'T BE LATE.

There'll be a day or 2 you can buy such items in like Sept on campus; a thing where a dude who sells stuff is brought in by AMSA (usually), and they have models to play with to see which you like the best. I wouldn't necessarily buy an otoscope or opthalmoscope. You can get by without one M1 year.

For 1 month of M3 year, I needed to have my own otoscope and opthalmoscope since the peds office I was in didn't have them on the walls.

I showed up there on the first day without them, and some doctors let me borrow, and one was like, "You need to get an otoscope, so you can actually do part of the exam."

So for 1 month of med school, I needed the diagnostic kit.

Oh yes, and if you do plan on getting a diagnostic kit, the PanOptic is extremely annoying.
