MCW Class of 2012

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
YES. Class of 2011 baby!!!!!!!

Ah, the 'Location: New jersey' on your profile had me thinking you were attending a different, 'more prestigious' medical school...

So I guess its safe to assume that M1 block 2 is the toughest in all of med school?

Ah, no, it's not the toughest. The spring semester finals blew fall block 2 out of the water.

Alright guys, so here I am sitting in the library, and then all of the sudden the roof starts dripping water next to me. I'm like, wtf is going on here. I give it a min thinking maybe this will subside, then all of the sudden the roof starts dripping in three more spots. Then it starts pouring like a freakin waterfall, so I get the librarian... As I type, a cop and a janitorial service man are addressing the problem.
omg, G-h-E-t-T-o

I guess this gives credence to the saying 'not all that glitters is gold'

I was basing my assumption on what an M1 student told me, I guess hes got a lot to learn.

Ghetto is when the librarian gets a bucket and goes back to work. When there's janitorial staff on the job day and night, that spells m-o-n-e-y.

Valid point 🙄

If you come here, you will be amazed at how many janitors they have here, and how often they clean. When it's snowing outside and the sidewalks have been salted, they mop the floors about every hour during the day. No joke.

And I was there, but I didn't see the water. I heard someone approach a librarian about it though.

Dare I say I felt the presence of a mighty Prowler as I drew closer to the librarian!

Good God, I need a life...

Those CleanPower people really do a good job. 👍

Does Sonny still patrol the halls in the early morning hours on the second floor, or did he retire?

I don't know any of their names, honestly. I wonder why the school contracted out the custodial work, rather than just hiring their own people.

... and you've got a TON to learn.

Thats so true 🙄

But chill out, that was my bad, I was not talkin bout you at all!!!! I'm currently visiting two MCW M1 roomies and after you made the comment about block 2, I decided to ask one of them. They told me it was the toughest block in all of med school. Sorry for the confusion...

We all have a ton to learn, and I'll be the first to admit it. 👍

Of course, you have to realize that no one (except maybe Don and I) has any idea what the toughest part of medical school is... and I'm pretty sure Don and I don't know either. That's like asking a freshman in high school what the hardest part of high school is... doesn't make a lot of sense. I'm not sure you can appreciate it until you're past it. Block 2 of all semesters is hard. Studying for step 1 is hard. Trying to motivate yourself for step 2 is not especially easy. Studying for a shelf exam while working 80 hours a week is hard. Staying motivated during the last few days of your fourth year rotations is a little rough too. It all depends on what your strengths are, personally, and how you deal with stress. Me, I'm good under pressure. I like to have deadlines. The harder thing, as far as the big picture goes, is trying to balance everything, graduating medical school ready for residency and maintaining some semblance of normal humanness.

Just my 2 cents though, what do I know?

Hear hear!

I can agree with all of that except the stuff which I have not yet gone through.

And now for something completely different, I really don't want to go outside right now.

But if you don't go outside, you can't go play orthopedic surgeon! I'm just saying.

I'm just picturing Ashers sitting in the grass on a blanket, playing with her orthopedic tools and making noises to go along with them.

Well said. I have nothing to add. 👍

Step 2 CS today at 3pm. 👎

the hardest part of med school is going to class after the novelty wears off.

But if you don't go outside, you can't go play orthopedic surgeon! I'm just saying.

I did go outside today, once to get to the hospital and once to leave the hospital. In between, I got to nail a femur. Sheer awesomeness. Usually the PGY-5 just has me retract, this was with the PGY-4.

Im just looking for some insight into Wauwatosa and the area surrounding the MCW campus. Is it a farely safe place to live? I have heard mixed things about the area and have been told that parts of Milwaukee are to be avoided. Do medical students ever feel threatened by the environment of Wauwatosa? Is the area surrounding the school mostly made up of students?

There aren't enough students to make up the majority of the surrounding area. I feel pretty safe in my neighborhood. Some people might feel a little iffy in Washington Heights, a neighborhood around Vliet Street, but that's probably fine, too.

Sherman Park, around 40-something, can be iffy, and going too far east along North Avenue is probably not such a hot idea. Downtown Milwaukee and parts of South Milwaukee may not be so good, either. Most of West Allis is perfectly fine but I understand some parts may be a little shady. The most serious crime I've seen in Wauwatosa is some blatant jaywalking. I live around 60th and Bluemound, which is in Milwaukee, and I'm quite happy here.

Har har. Understatement of the year award. 😛

IDCWTS - if you live west of 60th street, you'll almost always be fine. If you live in Wauwatosa (MCW is in Tosa), you'll definitely be fine. Even in the higher crime areas of Milwaukee, as long as you don't "forget" to pay your drug dealer, you're not going to be a victim of violent crime. We don't have gangs that will shoot you for wearing the wrong colors or for your Nikes.

"comatosa". You should live downtown because you're eventually going to want to. Unless you are married and consider a "wild night" to be one during which you get hopped up on soda and actually complete a game of Monopoly.

I haven't had a night that wild in years!

East side is going to be more of a "wild night" than downtown.

suPAR-I was accepted to MCW for class of 2012. I also rejected my offers to the other schools I was accepted. Have you had any luck getting your credit report from the website the school suggested? I sent two requests in (early and late Oct) and I still haven't heard anything. Congrats on your acceptance.

I sent my report in a couple of weeks ago. I used the website that they suggested and one of the reports was ready to print a few moments after I requested it. I still haven't heard a thing about the other one I requested. If I remember right they have three services that you can request them through. The first one I filled out said it would e-mail it to me, the second one had the report pop up on the screen after a bit. I didn't try the third since I got the information from the second one.

Congrats on your acceptance as well! 🙂

Just posting cause I got accepted today and I'm pumped!

If it's not working for you call the school for help. They're not kidding about wanting that report and they'll probably be happy to help you.

Does anyone remember when we have to turn our credit reports in? I think its before we matriculate, but I am not sure. Thanks

I think it's much earlier than that. Please call the school today and check!

If you are still unsure, shoot Mike Istwan (The Director of Admissions) an email.

Yours Sincerely,
Arsene Wenger.

With the All Spark gone, we cannot return life to our planet. And fate has yielded its reward: a new world to call home. We live among its people now, hiding in plain sight, but watching over them in secret, waiting, protecting. I have witnessed their capacity for courage, and though we are worlds apart, like us, there's more to them than meets the eye. I am Optimus Prime, and I send this message to any surviving Autobots taking refuge among the stars: we are here........we are waiting.

Has anyone starting thinking about housing yet? or do any of the knowledgeable hijackers have any input on where to live and whether buying is a good idea? I know it's still really early, but I was accepted in June and I want to leave myself enough time to work out a good roommate situation.

don't worry too much! most people get their housing established between may and some people don't even have a place once orientation starts if they were last minute waitlisters. There are always plenty of people looking for roommates, and I have never heard of anyone having a hard time finding a place...there are tons of living options, many of which are very near the school.

I was accepted to the '12 class back on Oct. 15, and haven't been on SDN much since. But hey and congrats to the rest of my future classmates.

So here is my situation, and a question for you med school vets....I just ended a 5-year relationship/engagement. I was planning on buying a house w/the hubby, but now since that isn't to be, I will have to rent. How do new students (not from the area) go about finding roomies? When is a good time to start looking for a place? Oh, and I need to live reasonably near campus, because I have a dog.

Since you have a dog, I'd start in May, since you need a place that takes dogs. There is a roommate list the school keeps, and you fill out a little preference sheet. If you're in the area you can look at it and call people and talk to them. They'll also e-mail out contact information for all the people looking for roommates. I think you can find a place close enough to school that you can drive home and let the dog out when you need to; one of my friends is single with a dog.

Both Normandy Village and the Reserve take dogs if you're looking for a large apartment complex. But they are driving, not walking, distance. But a short drive (10 minutes or less). If you want walking distance, you just end up having to call the places and asking. Often if they don't take dogs, it'll say in the ad, but if they do, it won't really say usually, so you end up making calls. I have a dog, and I actually found my current place on craigslist. Which is convenient to search on because you can filter for places taking dogs or not. I found this place in June for July, so you don't necessarily have to look super early if you have a dog, but it's not a bad idea to start early. Depends on when you want to move. Landlords around here tend to be later on advertising, which is stressful for the renters. Often they'll advertise only a month in advance.

Welcome to MCW.

Thanks, guys...I can't wait to make the move and get outta the current living situation (moved out from the apt. with the ex-fiance and back in with the 'rents...ugh)!!

Ugh is right! Sorry about that and happy house hunting.
