thanks everyone.

i certainly don't expect advice on how to be a single parent/med student, i just wanted to know how much time i would have outside of class. i want to have no doubt in my mind that it would be impossible before i seriously seriously consider adoption.

i wish i were joking about this. baby daddy and i already met with ken simons earlier this week. he basically told me if i need to take a LOA immediately after the delivery, i have basically lost credit for fall 08 and have to repeat the entire m2 year. he told me the path dept would be flexible as far as missing an exam if it falls during the birth, while the pharm department would not be so kind. however, i spoke with a former member of the pharm dept who work in the same lab i do, and she said that in her opinion, the pharm dept would be extremely accomodating.
i know there is a rising m3 with children, perhaps she would be a good resource for me.

baby daddy is classmate, so he can't run too far. however, he is currently making tom brady and kevin federline look like the fathers of the year.

there will, in fact, be an mcw trainwreck this fall/spring. at least i have an incredibly awesome group of supportive friends.

well, i am off to do some emotional eating, as i was informed by the nurse that i need to gain 35 pounds onto my tiny body. i also purchased "knocked up" this morning. my life feels so unreal.

Let us know if you need anything else. I can't believe they wouldn't count the whole first semester of M2 if you took a leave of absence starting at the beginning of spring semester...Friggin' ridiculous.

Word. You'd think that if it were pre-planned, it wouldn't be a problem, provided you did well that semester. I think the better option would be to take the year off, if you have to do it over again anyways.

yeah, but at least they're consistent. I don't know of anyone who took the 2nd semester off and didn't have to redo the whole year. The person from our class now in class of 2010 fully completed pathology, which is a big reason for having to redo the whole year.
 
A question to my kind upperclassman. I have two potential places to live.

Is paying ~650$ a month a lot for rent + utilities at a place 0.7mi from school? Or is this an awesome deal? I think the address is 7850 Harwood Ave. Rent alone is 1100$ for a two bedroom ( i have a roommate already). The good thing is that the lease will start on August 1, which is around the time I will be coming into milwaukee.

I don't have a car so being close to campus is important to me.

I also found a place 1.1mi south of campus at glenview ave and the total rent for the two bedroom is 800$. So rent + utilities will be ~500 a month I'm guessing. We are going to have to pay for half of July's rent if we decide on this place.

Is it worth the extra money to live closer to campus at the more expensive residence?

An extra $150/month for .4 miles difference? It wouldn't be worth it to me. I live about 2 miles from campus and pay ca. $500/month, all included, and I wouldn't pay much more to live closer, but that's me.

Yeah, 0.4 miles doesn't seem to make much difference. If it were $150 more to be across the street from school, I'd say go for it, but you'll still have to walk a ways (or drive). You could always rock a moped.

can anyone give me some advice for a 1 bedroom apartment thats not too expensive and not too depressing lol. i visited 3 places today: fountains of wauwatosa, mayfair, and parkview i believe. the first one was like 700 including parking, heat, water. the rest were in the 500's but were depressing as hell. i have a car so driving is not an issue but i'd like to stay within 5-10 minutes of the campus.

The first one sounds like a REALLY GOOD DEAL.

5-10 min from campus is REALLY close to campus -- bikeable (ask Funk)

edit: Ok, I've biked to campus too from 2 miles away.
 
oh i meant 5-10 min driving, sorry. but anyways, the first one was nice and big with a balcony..its right off hampton avenue. i dont know how most apartment complexes work around there but the ones i saw all included heat and water. so i was close to signing the first one but my dad thought 700 was still alot considering that electricity, internet/cable will push the total over 800. anyone have an estimate on how much electricity and internet/cable come out to per month on average?

I meant 5-10 driving too. It's a bikeable distance. I live 10-15 driving, and I've biked it.

My apt complex does not include any utilities. I think the 1 bedrooms are about 900, and if you want a garage, it's an extra $100.

I was shocked when i came to wauwatosa and found out that one bedrooms would cost me 650+. All the cheaper places were literally ****holes. where I went to undergrad you could get a nice one bedroom for 500 and an awesome one for 700+.

You should check out dolphin square. I was in milwaukee looking for an apartment about two weeks ago and i was really close to signing a lease at dolphin square but I found this other place on glenview that I really, really liked.

But...dolphin square was nice..close to the school like a 2 min drive...indoor parking...heat and water included...pretty clean...it was $650 (if i remember correctly). When i toured it they only had one unit available and it was on the 3rd floor right next door to another incoming med student who had just signed a few days earlier. so if that is still available at least you will have a med student near by. and the landlord lady said there were about 9 or 10 med students in the whole building.

Be glad you're not at UCSF. A basic one bedroom would be more like $1500.


If you want to save money, a roommate is the way to go.

I really liked Fountains. If I didn't get my current apartment, I would have definitely gotten a lease from there. Parkview, on the otherhand, was very creepy looking. I remember driving into Parkview's parking lot and my mom told me to take a U-turn out of it, because she didn't like it.

But yeah, $700 including parking, heat, and water is awesome! In ATL, you'll have to pay around $800-$900 for a 1BR rent...and plus all of the utilites on top.
 
When my roommate and I were in Milwaukee, we found a place called the Overlook. It looked very nice 2 br/2 bath, heat included, and 1 covered parking for 1050. It is a pretty close walk/drive to school too. If we hadn't gotten our lease for our current place we would have actively pursued that one. But as far as I know, there is only one apartment available.
 
Inexplicably, I am still looking for a roommate for my lovely duplex. My roommate's half of expenses would be ca. $492, including gas, electric, rent, and DSL.

I have to re-post them. People have apparently had great luck this year finding places in walking distance of school, and I'm two miles away. I need to hit the phones this weekend and call the M-1's who still don't have housing. It'll work out; I just wish it would work out a little faster.

I am no longer a med student for quite sometime now. I will be a fellow at MCW for the year 2009 and is looking for a room, $500 and less with everything included AND 1 underground/indoor parking space for my spanking new ride.


A bit about me: Asian, male, 36 year old, easy going, clean after myself. I am married with two kids. My wife and children are staying back at our house in Chicago suburb. I will be mainly staying if the Milwaukee apartment 4 nights a week. I will go back to Chicago for Fri through Sun nights. One weekend a month, I may remain in Milwaukee for call duty (but in the hospital throughout the daytime).

question about health insurance... can we technically enroll in a plan outside of humana/parents/spouse? my husband will be moving with me to milwaukee, and i was planning on getting insurance through him once he found a new job... but in the meantime we were going to do short-term insurance until he found one because it would be really financially idiotic of us to pay for humana (expensive s***!!) when he could potentially find a job within a few months, which is our hope!

anybody know of any place in need of application developers? hehehe

I'm excited to move down! I'll be there in like 2 weeks!

My understanding is that humana/parents/spouse are the only options available to students. Maybe you could enroll on a semester by semester basis and get onto your husband's insurance starting spring semester when he gets a new job?
 
Are there other people who HAVEN'T received their financial aid packet yet? I'm waiting. But nothing so far. I'm guessing the Financial Aid Office is still behind?

i received the finaid package last thursday. i know others who have received them almost a month ago so i assume that the office has been and is still working on getting them all out to everyone.

Unfortunately, you might be hard-pressed to get very good advice on this issue this year because the lender crisis and government regulations have really hit the student lender business hard and some longstanding lenders are backing off on their previously advertised perks. In fact, a good number of us that were previously getting loans through T.H.E had to bail from them and find a new lender because availability of their funds at this time was questionable.

If you look through the list of MCW preferred lenders though, you should be able to find one that waives any sort of origination fee and gives you a good interest cut during repayment. Good luck guys, pickings are slim.

Currently the only 2 lenders (well, actually as of the end of june, may have changed since july 1) with zero fee loans serviced by Great Lakes are National City and Anchorbank. I was gonna go with Chase, but they are no longer willing to work with Great Lakes, and they now are charging the 1% origination fee like most other lenders. I had signed the MPN in May, but didn't return my award letter by May 31, and Chase added the 1% origination fee in June. Might even be more now that it's July.

You don't have to choose a lender that works with Great Lakes, but its convenient to have a servicer.

My general recommendation is to choose a zero fee lender. The back-end benefits are never guaranteed.
 
are the monday, tuesday, and wednesday classes before thanksgiving full blown lectures?
 
They are normal lectures. As long as there isn't an exam you can miss them and listen to them online. If I had known I didn't need to go to those lectures I would have left a lot sooner for thanksgiving M1 year. It looks like us M2s can't do that with the ethics exam being there.
 
Wait...do you mean "full blown" as in they blow as much as any other lecture? Then yes, I can still guarantee, they do, in fact, very much blow. Hard.
