Hey all!

This is just an update on my search for the financial aid packet.

My financial aid packet is still not here. 🙁 So I finally called the Financial Aid Office today, and the lady told me that the Office sent out my packet on the 20th. It's now the 7th. It wouldn't take this long to mail it out, would it? 😕 Well, the lady told me that she couldn't do anything for me now, so I'll have to call back on Wednesday if my packet still doesn't arrive then.

So if you haven't received your financial aid packet, make sure it's not lost in the mail. 😉

I just called and mine was mailed out on the 25th. But it is getting sent to my parents address so I hope that they mail it out once they get it. I head off for Japan tomorrow, so I hope its here when I get back!

It will be there when you get back. Without a financial aid apt you can only borrow 20,500. You make the apt during orientation week. So don't worry about the money issue just yet.

Hey guys,

Any suggestions on which cable/internet provider to use in Milwaukee? I was so planning to use Comcast...and realized that it doesn't service there. I only need cable & internet. No phone service.

Thanks!

The only one I know offhand is Time Warner. Not sure if you have a choice beyond that. Maybe Uverse is available.

Uverse is now available at some places in Tosa, I believe (we were getting fliers for it), but my brother has it, and the Internet is terrible. The connection is quite spotty.

Yeah, so don't get that. Unless you like spotty.

I have time warner cables internet and cable with DVR and like it. I had terrible service at my last apartment only because someone kept trying to steal the cable. At my new complex I've had it for almost two months and it's been doing great.

That's why? Those Dixon apartments must be sketchy. Great street name, but I'm glad I went to the Reserve instead. I like having my own washer and dryer.

you mean like steal your wireless internet? wired > wireless

I'm stealing wireless internet right now in fact.

No, not the wireless. We had a mega password on that. Our basement was open to everyone and someone kept breaking into the cable box and moving our cable wires to different places.

How many people (upperclassmen) feel that cars are necessary when living in wisconsin? If I live close to campus, can I get by without a car?

I live in California and cars are a must in my area. I'm just wondering how it is over there.

Thanks!

If you live close to the school you can get by during the first 2 years without a car by just walking or biking to school. There are also a few buslines that run nearby, but if I recall correctly the cost is pretty steep and routes are somewhat restricted this far away from downtown. Either way, winters are pretty rough (speaking as someone who walked the 2 miles to school much of the first 2 yrs)

I think a car is pretty much a necessity during 3rd/4th year. You will be randomly assigned to area hospitals that may be as much as a half-hour drive away from campus and will be expected to arrive often before 6 AM to start the day. I can't imagine taking a bus would be very reasonable with those conditions.

is parking on campus free???

Yes, but they stick you in the remotest lot possible. A lot of people have a longer walk in from the parking lot than it takes them to drive to school.

Also consider how you're going to get groceries and whatnot if planning to go without a car. There are stores in the area on the buslines, but I think it would be a pain to try to transport your shopping stuff that way.

Did you get off the waitlist? If so, congrats.

If you've always had a car. It'll be really hard to adjust to not having one. I lived in a city in college where I didn't "need" a car, but I was miserable for my first year without one. I'd say a car is necessary.

Not quite, but either way I will be attending MCW for sure in the future. (if you know what I mean)

Did you call the office every day? I got that offer initially.

Unless you mean that you've signed up to work at Clean Power. j/k 😉

LOL.

What do you mean by initially? They offered but you didn't accept?

Every day? Nopes. I just did what I thought would genuinely show my interest in MCW 🙂

I called every day to show my interest.

The conversation went like this: "The admissions committee was going to offer you deferred admissions for 2006, but something happened, so we're just letting you off the waitlist now." So initially I was given deferred admission.

Ah, icic.

To my knowledge, there has been no waitlist movement this year yet, and therefore I think it is highly unlikely that I will get off the list this year (last year there was no waitlist movement, this year seems to be the same). I actually dont mind waiting an extra year because it would be such a rush to get everything straightened out at this time (only about a month till classes start).

On a side note, I think Mr. Istwan mentioned you during my interview orientation at MCW. He said that there was a girl from Hawaii (I remember you saying that you were from Hawaii) that called everyday and eventually she got in. Now, I don't know what gender you are, but it really sounds like you. Haha.

I can't imagine my life without Ashers in my class. Thank God she called every day!

I can't imagine being in any other class either.

have you seen her avatar? 😉

Ugh; exactly what I was going to say. It's like with smq123. I get that all the time when I don't have a girl like avatar up, and still frequently when I do. I don't get it.

I'm sorry. I just didn't want to assume anything and offend you. Sorry about that!

it's all right. people think i'm a boy too. my screen name and avatar probably don't help...

So is there a spot to work out at? I remember seeing some work out area during interview day, but I didn't get to really scope it out properly. What is in there? Is there anything with weights to do exercises like bench press, military press, pull downs, etc?

Three treadmills, two or three elliptical machines, a respectable set of free weights including benches, a lat pull-down and basic Ye Olde Nautilus machine. It's not fancy, but you can get the job done there.

Which cell phone company is generally the best in the area???

Anyone use t-mobile and have problems with reception and/or dropped calls???

Does anyone belong to Wisconsin Athletic Club or know what a membership costs?

Prowler does. I think the student discount brings it down to $50 a month, but I'm not sure. It is a very luxurious club as such things go.

I use T-mobile because I was getting dropped calls in my apartment with AT&T. I don't get good reception IN the building at MCW, but most people don't. Maybe Verizon is good there.

Verizon has signal in most places on campus except the Alumni Center, some of the MUTS and the ORs (all in the center of big buildings). It's sometimes sketchy in the bookstore.

I have T-Mobile too. Doesn't work too great at Normandy Village, but otherwise no problems. I usually get reception at MCW in the cafeteria and front lobby. No need to use my phone in other places of the building so it doesn't really matter.

I was, but I moved. It's about all you could ask for in a health club, except cheap. It's $50 a month for a single person, $80 for a married couple.

The wac has a lot of dudes looking in the mirror and a lot of girls trying not to sweat through their make up.

I also hear it has warm towels. I heart warm towels. I just don't heart them $50 a month worth.

A friend got a rash from a gym's towel that was allegedly clean. I bring my own towel nowadays.

There's a 10:1 ratio of guys working out their upper body vs their lower body. Bicep curls and bench press all the way!!!!!
