Pelvic dissection day sucks and the lectures surrounding it are not that great either. I wouldn't worry about missing because first off you won't be missing much and secondly the profs know that a lot of people will not be there so the dissection usually spans a few lab sessions. I went to lab that day and the only benefit was that they had some good dissections (which were over 20 years old) set up in the inner lab with a couple docs going over them. This was helpful because the student dissections were not very good due to the fact that the pelvis is hard to dissect and even the best dissections don't allow you to see everything because you have to cut through things to get to others. However, the better dissections may still be around after the holiday so you can look at them but you just won't have an expert there specifically to go over them. If I could do it over though, I would leave early and spend more time at home for the holidays.

Hey. Not sure if this helps but I've had a car for 3 years in Illinois with California plates and have not had a problem. I plan on bringing it up to Milwaukee as well and I don't think I need to transfer anything.

I think this kind of depends on where you are from. I am from Washington and I haven't had to transfer my registration yet. However, I have a friend from California who had to switch the registration because her car was due for emissions testing and apparently CA doesn't grant exemptions for that and obviously she wasn't going to drive home to get the test done. Also I have heard of people having issues with insurance coverage, but I haven't had any problems with that, and I was able to get an exemption for the emissions test for my car as well. Maybe play this one by ear for a while. There is no point in spending more money to register in a new state if you don't have to. I went to out of state undergrad for four years and never transferred.

Well, I just found out that for my home state, I can still register my car there w/o an emission if I can complete the Out of Area Extension request...which isn't bad. My dad's just fussing about it b/c my title's expiring in december. I just emailed Wisconsin's Bureau of Vehicle Services so I should find out the answer soon~.

As long as you stay current in your home state, you're okay. Same with your license. However, if you permanently misplace your license at some point, it's probably easier to get a new one here than to go back to your home state for one.

As long as you're a student, you can keep your out of state registration and lisence. If your registration expires, you need to either renew it or get WI plates.
 
I'm out of state and didn't have a problem with license or plates. My dad (since the car is in his name for insurance) called and got new tabs and I just got my license renewed which will be good for 5 years. I refuse to transfer my stuff over to WI unless I due residency here. In that case I would no longer really be a student.

You're not required to get new registration/license as a student UNLESS you have to be physically present with your car in your home state to get the new tags, and you can't get there, so you need WI plates.

As a resident you're working, so it's REQUIRED to get the new state's license, registration, etc.
 
Hi all,

It says in the orientation schedule that on Friday, drawing of blood will be performed. Is this for people who have not yet fulfilled all the required health requirements? Also, I already had a TB test done recently and had a chest x-ray too, can I also pass on being tested again? Hope to see you all soon!!
 
I have no clue (I hope soon) ? However, anybody know anything about drawing blood on the Friday of the white coat ceremony?

You'll learn how to place an IV and do an arterial blood gas 3rd year, but they don't teach phlebotomy per se. That's more of a tech/nursing job.

We weren't taught until m3 year. However I taught some people in my class at the saturday clinic since I was a phlebotomist.

No idea bout blood draw on the friday. Don't think we had to do itn abd if you've had a recent neg tb or CXR, you don't need the ppd again
 
This past year they had a training session for people who wanted to do phlebotomy. Just be aware that most of the patients weren't very nice about it at the clinic. I was there supervising someone who had just learned (I did phlebotomy for a year before med school) and the patients were reluctant to even let me try even though I had done hundreds of patients. The only thing the skill is good for is learning to start IVs which I have a feeling we don't do that often.

Yeah some of those pts were mean. I got stuff like, "I heard you guys were the best at drawibg blood, so you only get one chance, and by the way I have bad veins and I made sure not to drink anything, so you better get it." Someone really thought she was doing me a favor by being dehydrated.

I wonder what's changed in the last year or so, because I never had a problem with the patients I drew blood on there. Sometimes the hardest sticks were even the nicest ones, even after getting poked a bunch.

A fun trick for the phlebotomists to do on days when there is apple juice in the break room, snag a free urine container and fill it up. Walk into the main work area and loudly announce that somebody left a urine sample for you but did not label it. Proceed to drink the juice from the cup (make sure you still have the right one), then announce that you know who's it is. And add that they must be hyperglycemic.

This is more fun on days when there is cranberry juice, if you play it right even the doctor will think somebody left a grossly bloody urine sample.

Oh, and knowing how to draw blood isn't vital, but it's handy at the VA where the nurses don't do stat labs and you have to get blood cultures and do ACTH stim tests yourself. And if you play your cards right, sometimes you can squirm your way into starting IVs on the wards.

I hate it when patients say you only get one chance, they're really hard etc. etc. That pretty much means I'm going to miss. I try to be really nice when I get my blood drawn. They get as many pokes as they want with any needle size. I even let a paramedic try to start an IV on me in an ER. He went so slow that he almost couldn't poke the needle through my skin. I very politely said, it doesn't hurt that much so please at least poke it through the skin faster! The best part was when they tried to draw blood from the IV sight and it started spurting everywhere all over my cute monkey pajamas.
 
Is it really that hard? It seems like it would be easy unless the person is super fat or something.
 
If the person has decent veins and is well hydrated it's easy. Some people have really crappy veins. And then there are people who somehow think fasting means no food or water. So then you end up with a crabby and dehydrated person which is no fun at all. My favorite are heel sticks with the babies. So easy.
 
learn to draw blood on the first day of your anesthesiology residency.

I hate heel sticks except for PKU blots. I always drew blood with a butterfly on babies; it's easier. I couldn't get the blood into the stupid baby containers.

ya know, everyone always makes fun of wi, but in reality, our state is far from the top of the obesity food chain. I think the last I saw was somewhere around #20ish.

IVs are much easier at Froedtert than the VA. Having the M3 anesthesia rotation at the VA made me look like a rockstar at IVs at Froedtert last month.

Plenty of IVs on anesthesia rotation, but you won't be doing much procedure stuff in other rotations. Neuro ICU was good for procedures too.

I think I live across the street from it. It's around Glenview Ave, right? And there is a water tower near by? My roommate got to Milwaukee over the past weekend and told me about it. I'll be there on Wednesday evening.

Does anybody know where I can get a good bed from? Also a desk and chair?
 
Well, lots of basic ready-to-assemble furniture you can just get from the Target on Greenfield Avenue and Miller Parkway. For used furniture, you can try the Salvation Army on Greenfield, or the St. Vincent de Paul thrift store. Don't bother with Goodwill--they have overpriced crap for furniture.

How good a bed are you looking for? I'd go for Craigslist if you want used, or just look for sales if you want new.

most of the last minute people that come off the wheitlist are actually because of the 20-30% of you guys that fail the orientation lobotomy exam.
 
So what is the deal with the Pick N Save on Glenview Ave? They don't have beer there? And when I asked where I can get some, they said some liquor store down near the Wisconsin State Fair, but they close at 9pm. Is there some Wisconsin alcohol law that I don't know about? In California they can sell alcohol until 2am at places like 7/11.
 
In Wisconsin they have to stop selling beer, wine, and liquor at 9pm. Really hasn't ever been a hassle for me, you've just got to plan ahead for your drinking. At least you can buy full strength beer in grocery stores, and the supply isn't determined by a state-run monopoly (like some states).

I've never been to a Pick n' Save that doesn't have a liquor section, though...that's weird. Are you sure they didn't just have the liquor dept. closed and were trying to point you towards a liquor store that would bend the law for you? I've never been to that Pick N' Save. Go to the Pick n' Save on State Street in Wauwatosa, or the Sentry right across from it - they will both have decent beer and liquor selections.

If you want to go to an alcoholic's heaven, come down to the Woodman's by me in Oak Creek. Their beer/wine/liquor selection would rival any store in the nation, I'd wager. (Comparable to a Binny's in Illinois, if you've ever been.) The liquor department is bigger than some entire grocery stores I've been to.
 
The Pick n Save on glenview is pretty ghetto and lacks a lot of things. The state st. Pick N Save and Sentry both have liquor sections. I never realized about not selling liquor past 9pm. Shows how much I drink.

That Pick'n save is right next door to a junior high school and can't sell alcohol because of proximity laws or something.

Also, that Pic'n'Save does not carry Veggie Shreds and seems to get its produce from the dumpsters of other grocery stores. Go to State Street or to the Pic'n'Save on National Ave. in West Allis.
 
the 9pm law is pretty annoying, i agree. however, even though its 10pm in minnesota, it's worse there because weak beer in gas stations, must go to liquor store for everything else, and no sales on sunday.

in rural wisconsin the 9pm thing isn't a big deal because a lot of the bars have an off-sale license. haven't seen that in milwaukee. and i remember getting beer until midnight from gas stations in high school (from friends siblings of course) but don't know the law on that.

wisconsin is drunk all the time anyway. can you imagine if we could buy it at all hours?

Dude, is it me or do stores close really early here? I went a KFC on North Ave on a Friday night...and the dining area was closed before 8pm. Luckily, the drive-thru was open. Are there 24-hr grocery stores here?

BTW, about the car title/registration, it seems that WI doesn't care if you have a title from other states. That means, you'll have to make sure if you can register your car in your home state w/o physically being there. Hope that tadbit helps.

Well the whole thing about not selling alcohol after 9pm is a bummer, but they seem to balance it out with a s hitload of bars that have awesome drink specials (eg. 4$ pitchers!). The only place I have eaten out at so far is Jimmy Johns and that was around 8pm or so... the dining area was open there. The Pick N Save near my place on Glenview ave is open until 12am, not 24-hr but definitely more than sufficient in my opinion.

My roommate and I keep getting lost around this city. On the way to Water Street we some how ended up in the hood off of North Ave. Was that KFC in the hood? If so, maybe that is why they closed early?
 
Wauwatosa definitely has a dearth of late-night dining options. I remember many a time when I would pick my wife up from a night out of drinking with her friends and driving around in vain to find some fast food for her to eat. We would usually wind up with a frozen pizza from the grocery store, which would inevitably get eaten only by me because she would pass out before it was done cooking.

Well, for the best cheese curds, you should go to the State Fair this weekend. Holy hell, those are good. They also have them at most Dairy Queens in the area. For frozen custard, try Gilles, or Kopp's. Culver's has both frozen custard and cheese curds, but not the best of either.

Dammit, I did not even think about looking for the fried cheese curds, do you guys know if they have them there? I'll go back tomorrow. This midwest life style is pretty cool. The weather is nice here as well.

I had cheese curds up at a restaurant in menomenee falls. I forget the street/name, but it was on my way to Community Memorial Hospital.

I like Kopp's or Gilles custard. mmmm
