Medicine to Anesthesia

Hi all
I just finished my int. medicine residency, and will be working locums. I was interested in critical care and am thinking of applying to it. I love procedures, and I had enjoyed my anesthesia rotation as a med student four years ago. I would rather do anesthesia, it is interesting and more lucrative. Lots of loans and the rest... I need advice on how to go along with the process and being accepted. Will it be harder, easier, the same...Can I still use my LORs from med school. My step 1, 2, 3 all between 210 - 220. IMG. Let me know? Or we can have a discussion about applying post residency.

Your medicine background should help you out tremendously and negate any negative perceptions of your IMG status, unless you just graduated from a hole in the wall medicine residency. You may be able to use your old letters, but most programs will find it suspicious if you don't have at least one letter from your medicine program, preferably a good one from your PD/chairman. Your scores are OK, but your board certification in medicine will be something that makes your CV stand out.

You can apply inside or outside the match. Some programs may be able to take you in earlier than July, 2006. You should put together a list of programs you would be interested in joining and start contacting them to ask about their applications processes. Some will ask you to apply inside the match, many will ask you to apply directly to their program. This is using the July, 2006 start time as a frame of reference. If you are willing to consider a July, 2007 start, you can also apply for those advanced positions and give yourself more chances to matriculate to a program you might otherwise not be able to attend for any number of reasons (no positions available for July, 2006, etc.).

You should do a search on the forum for similar threads because there are probably a dozen or more just from this past 4 months. You can search my posts as I have probably replied to a number of those threads as well.
