From a young age I was always inspired by my mom, an anesthesiologist. She is my biggest role model and one of the hardest working people I know. One of my favorite things to do is discuss her cases with her when she comes home after a long day or a hard 24 hour call. But would it be appropriate to mention this source of inspiration in a medical school application. I heard from some that schools knowing you have a physician parent can be a bad thing since it translates to you being privileged and may not go along with their goals of having a more diverse student body. I'm only applying to a few Canadian schools at this point and I'm looking to become a physician-scientist. However, without having such an inspiration figure in my life, I may not have even thought about becoming a doctor at all.

It's completely reasonable, and you shouldn't be afraid to include it.
