So, I have a kind-of stupid question I'm hoping someone can answer. Does Michigan "double count" your prereq GPA for classes that include both lecture and labs? For example, I have a C in physics II, it was a combined lec/lab class, will that C count twice in my GPA? I haven't been able to find anything on it, but maybe I'm not looking in the right place. Thanks in advance!

I don’t believe so, but it’s best to contact admissions to see.

Hi all! I had a nit-picky question regarding one of Michigan State's short-answer supplemental questions. For the prompt " How would someone who knows you well describe you in one full sentence?" are we starting our answer with "someone who knows me well would describe me as .... " or just writing what the person would say? I know grammatically the first option is probably best but with a limit of 25 words that space could be better used to describe oneself. Also if I do go for the second option, do I put it in quotes?

Not an applicant and my application cycle would have been 14 years ago, but it seems like there’s a middle ground between the two options. I’d do…
They would say [insert answer].
It uses three words rather than the 10 in your intro phrase.

But in all honesty, I don’t think this actually really matters at all. If an admissions committee is truly that nitpicky about how you formatted a question with a 25 word limit, I’d probably have bigger concerns. The answer is more important than the format.

I'm a current applicant and I structured my answer as --> "They are a [insert adjective] individual who...."

I took it as someone directly answering the question; I also chose to refer to myself with gender neutral pronouns. It helped me meet the word count instead of wasting words on "I would describe them as..." or similar phrasing.

Can classes be in progress at time of application? Or is Michigan one of the only schools that doesn't allow it?

Michigan requires them to be complete. You cannot apply with courses in progress or they will not look at your application :/

Looking for the timeline Michigan would extend interviews (if they do interviews) and then timeline on decisions. Anyone know?

First time OOS applicant, just got the email that my application passed minimum academic requirements and is going on to file review. Has anyone else gotten this email? My friends and I are trying to figure out if it got sent to all applicants who are moving on or if they are gradually sending out the email as each application is looked at.

Received same email at 10:39 EST

Was this different than the email they sent out about our applications being Verified on 10/7? I am IS and haven't heard from them today

I’m OOS and this is different from the verification email I got. It says I met all the GPA minimum requirements and will be moving on to phase two where they will look at LOR, essays, etc.

Do we think that was the only set of those emails they were gonna send?

I was scrolling through the Michigan State thread from last year and it looks like there were multiple waves of that email sent out. Don’t lose hope!

Oh good that makes me feel better!! Ty

when did you submit ur application?

I haven't received an email saying I'm in phase 2, but I was put through phase 2 the last year I applied... I'm worried I won't make it to phase 2 this year but my GPA has only increased since then

If you took a class for 5 credits, that C will count only once for that class.

I am IS and received an email today at that I am going on to file review!

EDIT: my email was sent at 8:10 AM (Eastern time)

Good evening, everyone! I am a first year veterinary student at Michigan State, and I remember what it was like during the time from submitting applications until interview invites go out. Just know that each and every one of you are worthy of a spot! If anyone has any questions, please send me a message and I will answer as best as I can!

As I look at my comment, it is not very clear. To clarify, any class with any grade regardless of credits only counts once.

got a rejection for saying I didn’t have a course and below 3.0 on pre-requisite gpa. I calculated it all out and is a 3.08 and my course is on human physiology. I already emailed them but super upset, I really thought MSU was my best chance :/

Ugh. I am so stressed guys. I am a first time applicant (OOS) and I too received the email shortly ago stating that I have an unmet academic requirement- General chemistry and general chemistry lab. The stressful part is, I already took these and they were included in my application. Any idea why it would come back as I did not meet them? I emailed them requesting more info on why it indicates it is missing. I also confirmed on the PDF application that I did indeed include the courses. I’m really hoping maybe it was an error on the review part. Thoughts?

same thing happened to me but for a different pre-req. emailed them as well and hoping it’s an error.

Same here for different prereq, emailed them. Hope it works out for us!!

so weird I’ve heard some others saying this too. I wonder if there was a bit of an error this year with things!

Same! They said I didn't take biochemistry or physiology but I did. I just emailed them. Hopefully this will all be resolved for everyone. It is kind of frustrating.

There are many posts like this happening last year as well!! For those who were rejected due to GPA or missing courses, had you been moved to the admission committee and past academic review?

I also got an email telling me I was missing a lab when it was a lecture+lab combined course. I have never sent an email so quick

I got one too- missing an upper level Biology. Wondering if I should email them. Looks like from this thread I should!

If you know the upper level biology class fills the prereq, definitely email them!!

They answered my email today. So for those who had an issue with the upper level biology, I matched microbiology for mine. I had also taken genetics, so I thought I had more than enough. Turns out the school I took these at classifies them as a 200 level course, and Michigan state requires it to be a level 300 or 400. Shame but I guess I didn’t realize that when applying. Maybe this is the same issue for others

The physiology class was fine and they updated my application but the biochemistry was not okay. The type of biochemistry I took wasnt general enough and since it didn’t require organic chemistry as a prerequisite, it doesn’t count. I’m a little frustrated with the outcome because how is it my fault that my school doesn’t require orgo as a preq? I’m not going to take it at another school if I don’t have too. But it’s also my fault as I should have considered this deeper before applying. Oh well. Hoping everyone else gets a better response and moves back to file review!!
It is listed on the MSU CVM prerequisite page as requiring biochemistry to have organic chemistry prerequisites.

I just wanted to update what happened with my “missing prerequisite” MSU CVM admissions was super helpful and upon further investigation into my application they found that there was a typo entry for my course from VMCAS but that they were able to verify with my actual transcript that I had taken the correct course to fulfill the prerequisite, thus reinstating my application for consideration. Yay!! Fingers crossed going forward but I am so grateful they were able to help.
