Michigan State 2024-2025 (c/o 2029 hopefuls)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Thank you, it’s just. I spent a ton of money this year applying to schools and rn it’s only denials and my mom is in hospice and just wanted to prove to her that my future will be okay and idk just wanted to make her happy.
It’s not over yet! Goodluck with the rest of your schools

hi hi! do you mind me asking your stats? ive gotten mostly rejections so far, and am wanting to know is it my gpa or my experiences that are the main thing i should be focusing my time on in case i dont get in this cycle! also, CONGRATSSSS
I can look at my hours and PM you that later tonight when I get home from work but my cGPA is 3.85, sGPA 3.8, and last 45 3.95 if that helps at all. I’m also currently getting my MS in Microbiology. I’m so sorry it didn’t work out. Fingers crossed for you for any other schools you applied to! 🫶🏻

OOS rejection. I’m a little bummed that I’m not even an alternate because I thought I had a decent app and their admissions were pretty holistic. Maybe I’m not as strong of a holistic app as I thought LOL

I’d say MSU is becoming more and more competitive and while they are “holistic” it’s solely because they stop looking at gpa. Especially because they put everyone on an even playing field and want to know who will be more successful at client communication and being a well rounded person.

This is not to say those who were rejected do not fit those criteria, but were just edged out because someone had something else that made them stand out a bit more

OOS Interview!! I am a FOURTH-time applicant, but this is my first time applying to MSU!

My stats:

sGPA: 3.01
Last 18 units GPA (from grad school): 3.85
Overall graduate GPA: 3.80
Veterinary hours: ~4,000 hours
Animal hours: ~2,000 hours
Research: ~1,100 hours

Fun fact: I retook 100 UNITS for both science and non-science courses in which I earned a B/C or lower, depending on the class! It took about 3 years to retake this many units and I did it prior to enrolling in the veterinary public health masters program at Mizzou.

P.S. I am more than happy to share what I discussed in my essays! 😉

I was denied and literally have 5 years of experience of a VA, I do everything a tech does. A masters degree. Large animal and small animal experience even.

I am so sad that has happened. A master's degree is so much work and dedication! How many times have you applied?

I understand it is disappointing when you are strong in a lot of aspects. Michigan state is not a university that wants exclusively good test takers and people with billions of hours. Honestly, it comes down to essay writing and your letters of recommendation.

So they really don’t straight out reject any interviewed applicants?
I don’t believe so, but I’m sure if you absolutely bombed and like made a fool of yourself so badly in the interview that you’d could potentially be rejected. But in the past it was been your interview determines acceptance or ranking on waitlist

Praying you hear good news this cycle. Hang in there. Where all have you applied/waiting to hear from?
The very same to you!! I hope good news comes soon! I applied to CSU, WSU, ISU, MSU, UMN, LSU, KSU, and WesternU.
So far, I have an interview with MSU, alternate interview with KSU, and rejection from WSU.

can someone who got an OOS interview invite please share stats? im getting really worried about not getting in this cycle, and want to start improving my app. asap but im looking to see if its my experience, gpa, or maybe my supp essays. thank you so much and congrats <3
Hey! I'm going to post this for everyone too so you can see other kinds of stats. This is my second year applying! OOS this year, was offered an interview IS last year (13th on the waitlist) 🙁

I received a bachelors of integrative biology, finished with a cumulative GPA: 3.71, Science GPA: 3.62. I was a part of the honors college. In a couple clubs, but never made e-board positions, because of COVID and the fact I worked pretty much full time during college. I worked up the ranks at my jobs rather than putting all my time into clubs. My hours are below, I think I listed everything that's normally in stats, but ask me anything if you're curious!

Veterinary hours: over 3000 hours working with small animal gp, large animal, pathology, and multiple facets of equine medicine including: podiatry, sport med, general practice, and repro.
Animal experience: 2700 hours working with all animals stated above again. I worked jobs where I did both working with the vets and just standard animal care.
Research: 6 hours (lol long story)

thank you so much! this helps a lot! congrats!!!!!

Does anyone know if the IS wait-list has historically moved at all? I know IS wait-lists tend to be stagnant for a lot of schools. Also is anyone comfortable sharing the type of questions asked in the MMIs and how long you talk to each person? I've never done an MMI before. It sounds a bit like sorority rush lol.

It an interview lasting 6 minutes with each person. We have to sign an NDA about questions but they aren’t the normal interview questions. More situational and opinion based. IS waitlist typically doesn’t move more than 5 spots in a good year.

This is my third application cycle :-/
Don’t lose hope! This is my fourth cycle, I received a rejection from MSU last week. I’ve interviewed with them on my second cycle (first time with them) and was waitlisted #10. Made it to #1 and didn’t move any more, that was more heartbreaking than anything.

I received an acceptance from Bristol in the UK last month but still waiting from like 7 schools here in the US. So as disheartening as it is, don’t lose hope. All it takes is one school to see your potential, it will happen 💜

I was 13 on the waitlist last cycle and it only moved on spot for IS

Does anyone know if it matters when our interview is? Do people with earlier interviews have a better chance of getting in?

It does not matter. They evaluate them all at the same time. There’s people in my class who interviewed in May and got in (We were the really behind schedule year)

Hello! This is my first time applying to vet schools and I was fortunate enough to receive an interview offer from MSU. I'm incredibly excited but now comes the actual interview eek! I’d love to hear about others' recent experiences with the MSU Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) virtual format. I’m familiar with the general MMI structure but also looking for some insight into what to expect.
For context, I'm a first-generation, non-traditional applicant with a low science GPA (extenuating circumstances in undergrad). I have 500+ hours in a small animal hospital as a tech assistant, and 4+ years of post-bac research experience (ongoing) between two labs with mouse models, surgery, and husbandry. My application focused on my interest in lab/research animal medicine.

Any information would be appreciated! Would like to hear about what kinds of questions people were asked, if they referred to your application/supplemental or asked more nebulous/general questions to learn more about you. Or how the overall experience felt overall, and any tips or advice you have if you could redo or redid your MSU interview.

Thank you in advance! Good luck to other applicants out there, wishing good news for all of us this year 🙂

Back in the day, we signed an NDA-type agreement for MSU's interview. Not sure if they still do that, but people may not be able to be very specific in their answers to your questions. I was an applicant in the first year of MSU's MMIs, I think they have improved their process by leaps and bounds.

MMIs are closed file, meaning they know absolutely nothing about you beyond your name. You rotate through x amount of timed stations and you will read a prompt, then answer the prompt accordingly. Prompts may have absolutely nothing to do with veterinary medicine. MMIs are designed to be as objective as possible - there is no opportunity for discussing your application, who you are as a person, anything.

Biggest piece of advice (for anyone interviewing at any school): Read the prompts thoroughly, stick to the prompts, and take a second to organize your thoughts before rushing into your answer. Don't try to make small talk with your interviewer, ask them specific questions, bring up specific things from your application (unless it is somehow going to answer the prompt...depends on context) etc. We cannot break from the prompt, and if you continue breaking from the prompt, we may have to make note of that. It happens more often than you'd think! If you're done early, we sit in silence. The entire point of an MMI is that we don't know anything about you, so we judge your answer to the prompt and only that.

An NDA-type agreement is hardcore! But thank you for the info, I didn't know interviews could be closed file - kinda comforting in a way. And your advice is really helpful, I've never done an MMI so I appreciate the tips!

MSU MMI is weird IMO. It’s not a lot of vet questions and more thinking questions to see where your opinion is. I won’t go into details about specific questions, but it was the weirdest interview I ever had.

It was brutal the first year they did it. They actually had actors/actresses at certain prompts playing a role, and you had to interact with them while someone else was watching. Another station, you got paired up with another interviewee and had to role play with each other with someone watching. Very strange indeed, I absolutely blew it lol. It’s very different now.

This sounds absolutely ridiculous lmao. This almost seems more like a skit than a real vet school interview.

Now it’s all online so it’s a bit more tame than roleplaying
