Hey Guys! Anyone working on their housing situation? Looking for roommates who like to live in a house (fenced in yard for my dog). Let me know if you or someone you know might be interested!

I know it can be really hard to understand from financial perspective. I certainly can't speak for anyone else, but for me I knew I really wouldn't be happy here, and that's what mattered to me. My situation is probably unique compared to others, but I thought really hard about the fact that I'd be spending 4 years wherever I chose to go and the thought of being here didn't sit well. I don't want to hate vet school. It's going to be hard enough without disliking the institution I've chosen. Sometimes I wish I could just ignore that and pick the cheap school because I'd love to be able to save all that money for IS tuition! Maybe it would've been different if I'd gotten accepted right away instead of wait listed, but I just don't have a desire to go here. And who knows? Maybe I'd end up being really happy here, I just don't think that's likely after being here for 4.5 years and already desperately wanting to leave. Yeah it's a lot of extra debt, but I didn't want to pick a school just because it was cheaper. I can only assume there are others that feel the same way.

Just trying to help others understand 😉 Money may be the deciding factor for most people, but for others of us it's much more complicated. I promise we're not crazy (or crazy rich), we just have some different priorities!
I decided to turn down MSU for very similar reasons. You're not alone!

I haven't been added to the 2020 FB group yet, so I'm just gonna post this here for now. I'm looking for someone to take over the lease at my current apartment. The place is amazing for a student, but I recently got a dog and I want to move into a house with a fenced-in backyard. The apartment is a 1 br/1 bath (yay no roommates!) in Haslett, which is a small town northeast of campus. It's a pretty short 10-15 minute drive to campus, and it's conveniently far away where you don't have to put up with all of the noise during football games, loud undergrad parties, etc. but still close enough where you can get to campus pretty quickly. It's right next to a set of gorgeous trails that are amazing to walk through whenever you want a study break.

There's an indoor pool, hot tub, sauna, and gym that you can access 24/7, as well as several outdoor volleyball courts. The building that I'm in is pretty great because most of them are grad students so they spend most of the day quietly studying. They all have dogs and they were more than glad to let me borrow them last semester to practice palpations for anatomy exams. The rent is $653 for the rest of the summer, and then $673 for the rest of the lease term (August 2017). They let you sublease during the summer months if you decide to go back home for the break. The utility costs are split amongst all the tenants in the building (except electricity) and my utility bill is usually $20-30 depending on how cold it is + ~$20 for electric. There are some other vet students that live in this complex and there's a study room with computers in the main office where you can host study groups or study on your own. The complex is within a 5 minute walk to a ton of stores; Walmart, Petsmart, Aldi, Little Cesar's, and a whole bunch more, as well as Meridien Mall which is a 10-15 min walk or a 2-3 minute drive. They're very pet friendly and don't charge pet fees for anything that isn't a cat or a dog. They normally charge a $200 deposit and $20/month of pet "rent," but some of my classmates have gotten that waved and they're currently not charging me anything for my new dog. Also, if you want to foster any animals (and trust me, there'll be plenty of opportunities while you're in vet school) they do not charge you anything.

I'd like to move as soon as possible, so if you're looking to move here during the summer to get used to the new place (I did this to transition into school/living in the north better) that would be awesome, but if I can't find anyone to take over for the summer I'll be looking for someone to move in sometime before school starts in the fall. I will post pictures on FB next week when some of the upperclassmen and the rest of the new students get added to the group, but you can check out some pictures on their website in the meantime at nemoketrailsapartments.com. Message me if you have any questions or would like to look at the apartment!

In case anyone was wondering, the waitlist was moving quite a bit last week. I got my offer Thursday (4/21), I was #17 on the out of state waitlist and accepted. :soexcited:

Can I ask if you were #17 to start or #17 after April 15th?

Can anyone give advice on nice neighborhoods around East Lansing and surrounding areas? I'm from Ohio so I have no idea where to even start looking for places to stay. I'd like to either rent or buy a house, I've got 2 dogs, 2 cats and a fiancé joining me so I don't think an apartment is an option. I'd like to be no more than 30 minutes from the school if possible. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Haslett and Okemos are the nice neighborhoods. Depending on your definition of "nice," I would not recommend Lansing or East Lansing. Lansing is just pretty bad in general. East Lansing can get very loud during football season and has a higher crime rate since the high student population attracts thieves that are after electronics. Every single report of robbery I've gotten this semester has been in EL. Okemos is where most of the grad students live and it's a gorgeous area! Haslett is a bit north of Okemos and is pretty great too, but you'll mostly find apartments there. You can get Lansing houses very, very cheap, so it'll be tempting, but I would highly recommend against that area. I didn't listen to a friend and I picked a Lansing apartment when I first moved here and it was soooo horrible. Thankfully I was able to get out of that lease and move into the last apartment (literally) that was available in Haslett. The only downside to Okemos is that the rent is pretty expensive from what I've seen. The only students that can usually afford to live there are those that rent a big house and have 4-5 students splitting the cost. If you and your fiancé can afford to live there, that's where I would recommend. If not, try looking for available houses in Haslett.

I lived in Lansing at Motor Wheel Lofts for 3 years (up until last year) and it was amazing! Super dog/ cat friendly and the people that lived there were amazing. Mostly young professionals or residents at the hospital. Definitely worth checking out. Also, Mason is a great area.

Thanks for the advice guys! I will definitely look into those areas!

Sooooo Carriage Hills East, a DTN community, is pretty nice. Reasonable prices and a straight shot down Haggadorn to the vet college....maybe 10 mins drive I guess! The managers are a little bleh but then again that's DTN for ya.

Can any current students give me advice on whether or not I should buy a new laptop for school? My old laptop died so last year I bought a surface 3 tablet, it has an attachable keyboard and can also function as a computer (I've written a few papers on it). The only problem with it is that the screen isn't super large so if I have work on it for more than a couple hours it'll be annoying. Do any current students use a computer/laptop a lot or is most of the work just studying from printed notes/textbook?

You'll be using your laptop all the time. Very few people take handwritten notes during class. Your exams will also be on your laptop. A good portion of my class has the Surface, so I don't think it's really necessary for you to buy an entirely new laptop since you just bought that one.

Oh, adding on to the laptop thing, is there a general consensus on Mac or PC being better? I need to buy a new laptop for next year anyways, and I was thinking of sticking with Mac, but I know a lot of people use and like PC for some accessibility reasons. I've also been thinking about a tablet/iPad and how useful that would be with studying. Any thoughts/advice is appreciated 🙂

From my experience, Echo360 works much better on macs. I'm convinced their developers coded the webpage on macs because the shortcut commands do not work on any of the windows computers I've tried it on. Most people will do 90% of their studying by rewatching lectures on Echo so I'd say that alone is worth going the Apple route. Aside from that, I got my first mac ever right before starting last year and I'm now a full mac convert.

About the Surface computers...a ton of my classmates use those, and most of them agree that they hate it. One of my classmates gave up on using hers out of frustration halfway through the semester and just switched to taking notes on her iPad instead. I've never owned one and I'm sure you could use it just fine so I wouldn't recommend replacing it if you don't have to, but if anyone's interested in getting a new computer for school, I would advice to stay away from them based on what I've seen my classmates go through.

I've got a Surface Pro myself. It's been behaving well lately, but I sometimes have troubles. To be fair I'm sure it's not a big deal but I was a Mac person before. Some days I wish I just bought a new Mac for school (would have cost the same), but the handwriting and drawing capabilities on the Surface seriously rule, so if you are big on handwriting instead of typing notes, it might be worth it to you!

Hi fellow classmates! I'm new to SDN and don't even know how to work this site yet haha but I have been following this thread for quite some time. Very excited to meet all of you🙂
I have a question about living on campus in Owen Hall (for grad/professional students.) Do you know any vet med students who live/lived there and what their experience was like? I am concerned that the environment might not be conducive to studying and the last thing I want is loud noise/distractions/more stress. Other than that, it would be the most ideal option for me as I won't have a car (it's ~5 min walking distance to the vet school) and I also cannot afford to rent an apartment the first year. Any input would be greatly appreciated!

I know a few students that live there. Although it can get loud - especially during football/party season - you always have the option of studying at the vet school. You'll get 24/7 keycard access so you can go to the reading room or student center and study there whenever you'd like.

5 min walk + not having to park a car = GOLD

Can any current students give me advice on ways to qualify for in state tuition? The registrars office was zero help. Did any of you move to Michigan with a spouse and then were able to receive in state tuition after a year? My fiancé and I are both from Ohio and will be moving to Michigan in August and he will be working full time as a physician assistant while I'm a full time student. Do we need to be married before we move to Michigan in August? The registrars office made it sound like it was the most complicated process in the world and could literally answer none of my questions, I understand that every case is different but there have to be some set rules about this. Anyone go through a similar situation? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

In my understanding, if you are admitted as an out of state applicant you will continue to pay out of state tuition regardless of if you become a Michigan resident after one year.

Does anyone know anything about DTN Management's "breed restrictions" for renting? I assume it has to do with bully breeds, but I'd like to know before I go and ask them myself on Tuesday. I'm ready to give them a speech if I have to.

I am almost certain it has to do with size at most of their properties (under 25lbs) and in some they do ban bully breeds. It is ridiculous if you ask me. Sadly they are a large property management firm so your speech will have no effect on their policies (but please give it anyways).

I live in a DTN community now and their restrictions are of the "bully breeds", as ridiculous as that is. Attached is a picture of the restrictions. First one listed was doberman (not shown). I don't know if this applies to all of their complexes though.

Also, I do know a couple of friends who had their vets change the breed to a "Mix" of some sort and DTN didn't question it, but obviously that would be up to you if you decided to risk that.

Had written out a response, but decided it would probably be better in a PM, so I'll send you one later!

Got the orientation schedule for August, so the white coat ceremony is during orientation? Its not when we start clinicals? I saw some other schools wait until the start of clinicals in the third year or around then. Just want to double check so I can invite family, etc.

There are two ceremonies; one is in August before you start, and one is before you start clinics.

Sooooo I made a c/o 2021 applicants thread. I needed it.

Really? So it's the same ceremony, twice?
No. You get a white coat during the first ceremony, but it's more of a "welcome" type thing. The second ceremony is your transition ceremony into clinics. You get your nicer second white coat at that time.

I asked this question at the financial aid talk on interview weekend -

They said you can either defer for a year and work in MI to get in state... OR get married to a MI resident... So if your fiancé can establish residency, you may be in luck! But I think you should talk to them directly about when exactly you need to get married. From my understanding, it sounds like you probably could for the last 3 years if you got married during 1st year, but again, confirm that with them!

Wow, two ceremonies? That's kind of cool! Is is common for family members to attend the first one (during August orientation)? My parents want to attend, but I don't want to make them to come all the way from CA if it's just an informal welcome ceremony 😉

Most people had their parents and/or family attend! It's like a formal welcome ceremony and you take the veterinarian's oath, and have a nice dinner, then there are tours available to you and your guests. My parents came out from NH and enjoyed it.

Is there a limit to the number of people we can invite to the ceremony?

We could invite 2 people, but I think some people were able to bring more. They should send you more information about it.

For incoming students, when does the scholarship database become available? Are the awards applied to the Fall cycle? and does the college offer need-based scholarships? Thanks 🙂

There was talk of making the scholarship portal available before classes start in August, but if that doesn't happen, you'll hear more about that in early September. The awards will be applied to the spring semester. There will be a second chance for scholarships during the spring semester that will apply to the following fall semester. And no, there aren't need-based scholarships, at least to my knowledge.
