Midwestern, Glendale 2012 class

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
comparing glendale/phoenix to irvine, i will take anything lol

When i saw on portal that 2 bedroom share is about $500 a person I had a giant grin on my face. The rent for 1 bedroom is like half of rent right now for me. Need to sell myself on the corner to afford rent.

I finally have submitted all of my Pharmcas Application items.

Here's to hoping I wasn't too late :xf:

This school is seriously my top choice, I really hope I get in 😀

Good luck! The campus is AMAZING!!!

There is an apartment complex right across the street from campus. They give discounts to MWU students. There are also a lot of neighborhoods in the area that most likely rent out houses. If you contact student services (number can be found via your portal) they should be able to help you out with housing availabilities and room mate searches. Avoid going too far south of campus. It becomes ghetto after a few miles.

(keep size in mind when looking; electricity in the summer is gonna be a killer)

I own a house 9 minutes from campus - no looking for me. 😴

I'm bummed that I have to get all that crappy immunization shots again. I have no idea where to find the records that show I'm not diseased. Gonna be a pin cushion. 😱

When is the deadline? You are cutting it close. It will take pharmcas 3 to 5 weeks to get your transcripts in order once they receive them. Then there's the supplemental application you will need to fill out. I submitted my pharmcas stuff and payment on 9/14. They sent part of my application to MWU on 10/3, and the remainder on 10/10. I was invited to choose an interview date on 11/2. I choose 11/11.

ps.... when interviewing.... choose the stir fry chicken at lunch. yum.

Official deadline is sometime in February I believe, but obviously the earlier the better as less seats will be filled.

I know I'm cutting it close :scared: but I will do the supplemental, literally the day I get it lol. This semester's been especially stressful because of a little health issue I'm having, nothing serious but it tires me out. Don't know how I'm managing the 4.0 in 18 credits and my job, can't wait till next week is through and I'm done for this semester.

I'm done ranting I promise, anyway hopefully I wasn't too late 😀 there's gotta be some others out there who still haven't turned it in. Worst case I miss out this year, but come back way more prepared next year and turn everything in write when it opens up in June.

You might want to pay your primary care doctor a visit. He/She should have records of all of your immunizations. 🙂 You don't have to be a pin cushion all over again assuming you're already up to date on your shots.

If you're older-ish like me, it is going to be difficult to find immunization records. Luckily I have old old old records showing all the immunizations I had as a child, but I never had a chicken pox vaccine, because well when I was a kid...you built up your immunity by contracting it! I of course don't have any record of that, other than a picture of me at my 5 yr bday party, haha! Anyhow, so I contacted the appropriate people at MWU, and asked them about that. They said that if you have no records than you will just have to go to some lab (LabCorp, etc.) that does titer testing, and get testing done to show you have immunity still. Assuming you had those basic vaccines as a child, this shouldn't be a problem.

I'm interviewing in Glendale a week from today and right now I would say it is probably my top choice but I want to hear from some of those who already interviewed or current students. What did you like most about the school/program? And conversely, what would you say are some weakness or areas that you would want to see improved in the future about the school?

I remember you from Northstate.
Don't worry much about interview besides reviewing the questions from feedbacks. It is very relaxing.

Do you guys know if we have to buy allt he course books? Was randomly browsing bookstore website and pharmaceutics along have 3 books that might cost totally $200+! geez!

I'm pretty sure it's going to be similar to your college experience i.e. you'll get your stuff from online sources, friends, libraries.

psh saying like i've never gone to college.
who really buys books in college 😎 only book i had to buy was organic chemistry because it was annoyingly customized for UCI and can't get it in other ways.

Any new interview dates yet?

My point exactly.:meanie:

Thanks for posting - I never got a straight answer, and I haven't tried calling back yet. That immunization form is CON-FUS-ING! I'm glad to know I can have the titers done instead of going for a series of 3 booster shots because I can't find the records...

I haven't had to come up with immunization records since high school, and I'm out of range for their records. (The CCs don't require them around here.) My original immunizations were done in WA state - my mom found this card, but the immunizations were done differently than what the form asks for (standards were different then). My last tetinous shot was done at an urgent care... my high school boosters were done at a different primary care, who I saw I think twice and who never received my records from WA. Ugh, what a mess.

Yes, a super pain in the a**, but hey we got this far, so even if we had to get updated shots....that's trivial! If you have not had the hep B series, I would recommend starting it NOW, since I am pretty sure you are supposed to have completed the series of 3 shots before orientation? Also, they said they offer low cost titer testing (they have a contract with a lab there or something), I believe it was under $300. I have old immunization records, i.e., a little card showing all the shots I had as a kid, and my tetanus shot from 2007. Hopefully that works for them. Just not sure if we have to get titer testing again for all of those?

My immunizations record date back to the 70s in Massachusetts. I can't even begin to know where to start looking. As I said before, pin cushion. I'm going have to get injected with god knows what from god knows where.

On the welcome letter from MWU, it says we should be well on our way to getting our immunizations. Then in the very next paragraph it says that its strongly recommended that we wait until orientation before starting the process. <sigh>

The reason there has been no reply to this post is because its obvious that someone is just hoping to get an answer to the "why Midwestern?" question.

That's my problem! It's the same response I'm getting. I think I'm going to go get titers done (depending on cost), then take it all to them & see what they say. I'm confused by the "you'll get titers after orientation" but "you can't start class unless you have all the immunizations." What happens if I have a 2-step immunization that is now a 3-step series, and I'm no longer immune, but I show up to orientation - are they going to kick me out? 😱

I think we do need to get titers even if we did have the proper immunization, or recent immunization. Makes me wonder - do they have a lot of people lie about that stuff?

I thought the point of these forums was to exchange information between fellow applicants and current students? I have my reasons for why I applied to Midwestern but I wanted to hear from people who have had more direct experience with the school. You can only learn so much about the school from its website, the personal experience past interviewees and students can give me an insight to the school that I would not otherwise be exposed to before my interview.

Hey everyone! I am a current member of Midwestern CPG 2014. I think there are a few of you with questions that haven't been answered that I may be able to help with.

Firstly, you have to have titers drawn even with proof of immunization. This seems to be more important when you go on rotations summer of your second year, but I think the reason they stress it so much now is because if you do fail a titer, sometimes aquiring immunity can take a little while (for example, the Hep B series). I was still working on my titers when I started class this past summer. So, they aren't going to keep you from coming in if you don't have it completed, but you definitely should get started if you can. I know some people don't have insurance to cover the costs. Midwestern has a deal worked out one of the local facilities so that students get some type of discount. That may be the reason for the "you'll get titers after orientation" line that you mentioned.

Also, textbooks are a personal preference. I've actually only bought one so far. I do know that some students, though, have bought all of the books. Professors may give recommended readings with their lectures, but I personally haven't read many of them. When I did feel the need to get extra information, I found a lot of material in the library or online. There are even some textbooks available for free online.

If you guys have any questions, feel free to message me. MWU really is an amazing school with some amazing people. Good luck in your interviews! 🙂

Hello,

I was late with applying, I got my transcripts mailed out 11/4 and they were reviewed just after Thanksgiving. I filled out the supplemental the day after I received it, 12/7, and on 12/9 I got an email to come for an interview on 12/19. I was wondering who else will be attending that interview date? I don't have an amazing PCAT like others I have seen on here, only 72, and my GPA is only 3.6, but I was wondering how long after your interview did you hear about acceptance or waitlist? Also, my finals week starts the first day of classes for MWU-CPG... I am not sure if this will cause a problem, I might beable to tell my profs I need to take the final early, but that is about my only choice I think.

Sorry, mind was not functional with 3 turkey dinners. more normal

okay when we start school you can share all your nerdy games and activities.
I tried league of legends for about 5 mins and got bored. waiting on diablo 3 to come out in march, then i will disappear forever.

Yeah, diablo 3 is bad news... my GPA took a hit this quarter while taking biochem 1 and i got a beta invite to diablo 3.

It took me a week to hear back about my interview and I interviewed in early December too. I know a couple others in my group had heard back within just a few days.

Thanks so muck for the response!

I tried to read some of the older posts, but someone said something about admission committee meeting up before they call for acceptance? What days do they meet?

<Sorry for the multiple posts, I just saw that there is a multiquote button which I will use from now on>

I'm not sure. I think I interviewed on a Thursday or Friday and they met Monday? I can't remember for sure. It may change with holidays too. Our break starts the 21st, so I don't know how that works. I remember the response was fairly soon, definitely under the 2 weeks they told me it may be. If you watch your Midwestern portal, it will change once you have been accepted and entered into the system. I noticed the portal change way before I got an acceptance letter.

Anyone interviewing on the 19th? This will be my first group interview and I'm looking forward to it!

I have a friend that's interviewing on the 19th as well.

Good luck to everyone interviewing on the 19th, you'll love the school 👍

... enlightening stuff...

Hey, welcome to the thread riobritt30! Appreciate you dropping in!

I know several people had questions about the sports scene - I saw questions about basketball & volleyball teams. Do you know anything about that? Also, how packed does the gym get?

Besides arranging an alternate time for the finals, I think your only option would be to pick a different interview date. That's a tough choice. 🙁

Also, as long as these finals aren't required courses for Midwestern there won't be a problem.

😕 Do you mean something like "it doesn't matter whether you bomb / don't take the final as long as it's not a required class?" I'd check with the admissions office before deciding to ditch. You might have to get a C or higher on any in-progress classes. Otherwise, while I wouldn't suggest bombing a class to anyone, I suppose it's an option.

MWU academic schedule does come in conflict with students graduating from the quarter system immediately prior to entering the program.

By gym do you mean the work out place? They have a tiny room of work out equipments from what I briefly remembered. If you are referring to the in door basketball court, that she will have to answer for you haha.

Yes, and the dean said his office helps students every year in arranging graduations, etc. so those students can still matriculate on time. I don't envy anyone the stress. 🙁 It's a shame they had to change matriculation from September to June.

In my question to riobritt30, I was meaning the work out room. I figured some of you sporty types might like to know. 😀 I guess I meant gym in the Chuck Norris "Total Gym" way.

I honestly don't understand how MWU can work something else for those students..it's a pretty tough situation. Most undergrad finals don't even happen until 2nd week into the Pharmacy curriculum.

Small gym...meh...can't do much about it. I always hate going to work out and bunch of guys are pumping 5 times the weight that I am curling...forever sadness. Just gotta sit in my apartment and curl soda cans instead.

assuming that stands for call of duty...sad thing is i never played console games until recently when i bought the xbox...and NBA is the only thing i play pretty much....🙁

Trying to understand some of the things we will be learning from the curriculum, do you guys have an clue what are the "Integrated Sequence" and "Professional Skill Development" about? They have a court in every quarter, so must be something intense and very important.

Just seeing if anyone knows.

I am applying to this school too. I just finished my application. I got all my LOR and transcripts, but I am still trying to ask couple more people to proofread. Anyways, is the interview a group or individual? What kind of the topic for the essay part?

Hello there, I'm a P1 and the answer to your question is that the interview is a 3 on 3 usually. You have a panel of 3 administrators as well as 3 interviewees. I personally liked it.

Sports,.. We have two separate gyms. One has free weights and the other has a bunch of treadmills, etc. Most of the guys who like going to the gym do so at MWU. There are a few that go off campus. For example, I live in Sage Stone which actually has its own gym. The school also has a large gym with two courts and a couple raquetball courts. However, most of the year you will find most people at the outside basketball and volleyball courts. We have a ton of intramurals which a lot of pharm students are involved in as well as classes like spinning, kickboxing, etc. A lot of us also do hiking, rockclimbing, and runs on the weekend.

Just seeing if anyone knows.

Professional skills development involves learning how to make OTC recommendations, how to counsel patents, learning medical terminology, learning drugs and their generic names, SOAP notes, and similar concepts. Integrated sequence is pretty much where you learn all of the stuff you expect to in pharmacy school, like medicinal chemistry, pathophysiology, mechanisms of action, and much, much more. PSD focuses more on learning how to interact with patients and getting the basics to become a pharmacist while IS gives you all the science you need to understand disease states and drugs you give the patients.

thanks so much for answering that. I tried looking into the catalog and it doesnt say much. 👍

did you guys receive any confirmation after submitting your supplemental application?
How long after submitting your supplemental application did it take to hear back for an interview ?

I don't actually recall getting a confirmation or not from them, however, if it has been a while and you haven't heard from them, then feel free to email somebody there just to make sure. After the supplemental I did have to wait a little while before getting an interview, however after my interview, the portal opened up for me the next day saying that I was accepted =) Don't be afraid to contact anyone in MWU because everyone is very open and accesible 🙂

I recieved my interview invite 2 days after I submitted my supplemental. I was quite surprised, and I don't expect any more interviews like that.

I received an interview invite the next day after submitting my supplemental app. And, by no means do I have a great gpa. They just seem to be really on top of things at MWU.
