Minnesota

Congrats on Guelph, Vetgirl! As for MN, I just loved it there!!! The people were awesome, as were the facilities. There are so many electives, some of which you have time for your first semester! I also loved the fact that they have a clinical skills class right from the get-go. I mean, for someone like me, I need to learn how to do almost everything, and they teach you about the physical exam, taking blood, etc. I feel that for myself, it is essential to be reminded of my ultimate goal, rather than spending every moment just in the classroom...

Yay for MN! 😀

On another note, is anyone else highly concerned at all the extra loans we will have to take out to pay for living expenses???:scared:

if anyone is looking for a roommate, i'm going to be looking for one as well. i'm quiet, neat, keep to myself, non-smoker, will not be bringing any pets, and have lived with others before so i know the kind of consideration it takes to live with others. i think that i'm going to try to get a place starting august 1st, to give me the month to get set up and ready for school. i'm out of state, but i have family in mn that are going to help me scout out a place!

Just out of curiousity...and maybe this is a stupid questions, but are you male or female?

female
i am soo excited about umn. i just came from prevet club meeting and was answering questions about applying to vet school and such. i can remember being in their shoes, and it is so excited finally being able to say that i was accepted and going! (i was even trying to recruit people to apply to umn next year)

So, I'm on the waitlist for Minnesota and I would really like to hear some good news soon. Well, don't mean to be pushy or anything, but to those of you accepted, who all is declining your seats? I know there is a thread for the topic of declining acceptances but that one is pretty confusing, I just want to know for Minnesota specifically. Thanks in advance.

Hey All,

So i sent my check in two days ago.....I also declined the interview to Guelph...*sigh*....so that means unless some other school decides to interview me or pull me off a waitlist, I am 99.9% sure I'm going to Minnesota next year. Yay!!!

i looked at the schools declined thread and saw @ least 2 people that were delcining out of state spots

yeah! well then 99.9% see you in the fall vetgirl!

Awesome! I can't wait to meet you guys! So...my mom and I are planning a trip to MN in june to look at apartments, and quite possibly rent one then. Anyone have any input about neighborhoods, looking for a New Yorker as a roomie, etc?? 😀

Hey All!

I also handed in my money and am so excited to be actually starting vet school with you all! 😍 FYI (for those people like me who get paranoid), I got a confirmation e-mail from Karen Nelson that they got my deposit so make sure to check your inboxes!

I'm sending my deposit in today 😀 Can't wait to meet everyone in August!

i wonder what the new student orientation will be like...so exciting!

So, I have a second dilema and this one is a little bigger then the ontario one. I have the opportunity to decide between Colorado and Minnesota......and I have no idea.......they are offering me the opportunity to get in state tuition but start next year. Does anyone have some good advice. (5 yrs for 60,000 versus 4 yrs for 136,000)?

Help???What schools did you all choose Minnesota over?

Congrats vetgirl!!! That's awesome!! I don't personally know much about colorado, but I have heard that it is truly an amazing school. (of course, so is mn) I think you just have to listen to your heart on this one. As much as I almost wanted someone to tell me where to go, I knew that it was up to me. In the end, I chose MN over Mississippi, Kansas and LSU. Overall, I just had the best feeling about it, and I really loved the technology as well as the tremendous caseload at the clinic. Still, the monetary factor of going to MN still scares the heck outta me.

That said, I would do my best not to let finances make the decision for you. Still, that is a HUGE difference in tuition costs. I just read somewhere that minnesota is the second most expensive vet school to attend, due to the tuition combined with the cost of living. I am older, so the less money I owe the better - and yet, I still chose MN! I just loved it that much!

I will give you the advice my mother (always right) gave me: Tell yourself that you are going to one school and sit on it for a day or two. If you find yourself really wishing that you had "picked" the other school, then there's your answer...

Congrats again!!! What a wonderful dilemma to have! 👍

I agree that you have to go with your gut feeling. I chose UMN over Oklahoma (out of state) and LSU (contract spot & recruiting scholarship). It was a really difficult decision b/t LSU & UMN. I decided on the U b/c when i left there i was like 'this is somewhere i want to live, i love it here' i really felt like i belonged there, and everyone was so nice, and the school was awesome.
good luck & congrats!!!!!!! 😀 😀 😀

Coming from someone that has finished vet school (well I graduate in May). I have to say you should STRONGLY consider Colorado's offer. It is very seldom when someone has the chance to take a year off knowing they already have a spot and don't have to worry about the admissions process. Vet school is going to be the most time consuming and many times the most stressful thing you encounter. Having the chance to take a year off without worry is great. You can either work to pay for some of your schooling and end up with less than $60000 in loans or spend time with family and get out (you won't get much of this when vet school starts. Having a significantly lower debt burden will open many doors for you when you graduate. Colorado is a great school (so is MN). I had a year off (but was applying) and am very greatful for that year. Good luck with your decision.

I sent my deposit to MN yesterday!

There is still a small chance I will consider Tufts if I were taken from their alternate list (but I'm not holding my breath; I think it's unlikely). I need to factor in my partner's job needs, our family needs, etc, and from those perspectives Tufts is more geographically desirable than MN.

BUT--I liked MN's program over Tufts and got a better vibe from MN's program and people. So right now, we are MN-bound, and I couldn't be happier about that!

FYI- I officially withdrew my intent to enroll to MN in favor of Tufts. The benefits of being close to family and having my partner close to some great job opportunities was just too much to pass up. Although it was very sad, b/c I really did love MN...

Well, runnerDC, I'm sorry you won't be in our vet class at Minnesota 🙁 But I do wish you the best of luck at Tufts!!! 🙂

So, I haven't been home yet today (been spending time at the mall, yay for shopping and now I'm bugging my brother at work) and my mom called to tell me that I got a letter from Minnesota. I was number 11 on the waitlist originally and now I'm number 10 or 29, but it sounds like they're considering me a resident. I live in California, paying in state there would be nice but with those odds I won't get as an in-state, I guess I better call tomorrow and try to figure it out.
Has anyone at all gotten off the waitlist?

Hi everyone. I just got referred here and found other future Gophers.

I look forward to seeing all of you in August. And for those wait-listed folks, I was #6 on the resident list and got the call Friday that I'm in. Got my packet yesterday and I have to send my form back this week. 😀

Congratulations, Schmoe!!! I look forward to meeting you in August 🙂

Hello everyone! Just wondering if anyone has gotten the big packet in the mail yet. I'm a nerd who's been excitedly checking the mail daily, but have been disappointed thus far. 🙁

no just the email about roommate connections- yeah i've been checking too 😀

Thanks HiatusAfflatus! Yeah, I was really happy when I got the roommate connections E-mail, even though I already know where I'm going to live. I was getting concerned for a bit that my acceptance was all just a dream. 🙂

has anyone received anything yet? i know the time will come quicker then i think, but i'm getting anxious!

Aside from E-mails (roommate connections, buddy system, etc.), nada. And I too keep going to my mailbox looking for what I think will be a big white envelope...

My guess is that it's still gonna be a bit, though. I just got a laptop for my birthday on Wed. (yay for the laptop! 🙂 and was concerned because I still don't know what the requirements are for school. However, having the best sister in the world, before she bought the laptop she called the U of M in order to find out the requirements. The woman she talked to told her what she needed to buy, but also mentioned they hadn't finished typing up the list yet. Thus I suspect they still have at least a little work to do finishing the packets, let alone sending them out. But I could be wrong; maybe we'll all go out to our mailboxes tomorrow and there they'll be! *Fingers crossed* 🙂

thanks for the reply serendipity. that doesn't supprise me that it might still be awhile. i imagine that people are still sending in transcripts to change their admission status to full. i just got my changed last week, and i sent my transcript in the first day that i could. that was really nice of your sister to call and find out! maybe next week we'll get the packets...

Hey everyone! Okay, I just received the list from the Veterinary Student Supply with the list of what we need to buy for first semester. Does anyone know which books they're going to get? Or, for any students currently going to the U of M, any advice on which books we should or should not buy? I'm especially wondering when it comes to the books for Cells & Tissues (should we get the Textbook of Veterinary Histology by Samuelson or Dellman, or should we get the Comparative Veterinary Histology with Clinical Correlations by Aughey and Frye, or we should we not get any book for that class), and which Veterinary and Medical Dictionary? Also, any recommendations when it comes to which stethoscope to buy?

Here's my recommendation for books:

Definitely need the Evans Guide to the Dissection of the Dog for Anatomy... I bought the Textbook of Veterinary Anatomy and used it once or twice. The profs' notes are really thorough, so I don't think a text is super necessary. I got the Pasquini guide for anatomy as well, which the professors frown upon but students love it. The Pasquini guide is one of the only good books for large animal anatomy. VSS stocks it even though it isn't a "Recommended" book.

For Histo, the notes and pics on the CD ROM are very thorough, so you really don't need a textbook... I bought "Wheater's Functional Histology" and found it very helpful, though- good big color photos and nice diagrams. I used it as much for Organology 2nd semester as I did for Histo 1st semester.

The Radiology book is great and I used it all the time. Quizzes are open book, so obviously having the book is handy. You also have a lot more radiology courses ahead, so the book will be useful beyond 1st semester.

I stink at biochem, so I really needed the textbook. I used it a lot and found it helpful, but am planning on selling it as I don't think I'll ever use it again. I used my undergrad biochem book too, but the recommended text has a much narrower focus, so it had a lot less extraneous information and was easier to study from. Not everyone bought it, though, so it depends on whether or not you are a textbook-using person.

Stethoscopes are a bit of an enigma to me, as I've never used mine enough to decide if it's better or worse than anyone else's.... But here's what I know from what I've read: Littmann's are the most common type that people get, with the Cardiology III (I believe?) being the fancy-schmancy most expensive one. Some people say you should get the fancy one now, since it's best to learn on what you'll actually be using as a doctor, while others say learn on the crummy ones, and then it's easier to hear things when you go up to a higher quality scope. I decided to go against popularity and get a Harvey Elite (http://www.allheart.com/ty5079elite.html). More expensive than the cheaper Littmann's, but less expensive than the Cardio III. Someone on the Allopath forum said he thinks it's a much nicer scope than the Littmann's, and I really liked it when I tried it out. We don't use them too much first year, so I guess I can't say if its clarity is any better or worse than anyone else's scope, but I like it. Lots of people say you just have to try them and see what works best for you. And talk to vets you've worked with, they're usually good resources for that too.

Not sure if they included it in your packet, but there is a dress requirement in the large animal hospital (where you'll be spending a lot of your first semester)... Maroon scrub tops and black pants or khakis. A nice thing to know before you go to buy scrubs! Although if you join SCAVMA you get a free set a maroon scrubs.

Have fun first years!!

One more note: the Christian Veterinary Fellowship sells used lab coats for anatomy lab that they've washed and bleached. I strongly recommend trying to get one through them rather than buying a new one, since it's really sad putting on your shiny just-out-of-the-wrapping white lab coat for your first day of anatomy and immediately getting it covered in cat juice. You will not use that lab coat for anything other than Anatomy, no matter how many times you wash it or how careful you are! Many as well save a few bucks and buy it used through CVF.

StealthDog -- thanks for all your help and advice, it is definitely appreciated! 🙂
