Here's my recommendation for books:
Definitely need the Evans Guide to the Dissection of the Dog for Anatomy... I bought the Textbook of Veterinary Anatomy and used it once or twice. The profs' notes are really thorough, so I don't think a text is super necessary. I got the Pasquini guide for anatomy as well, which the professors frown upon but students love it. The Pasquini guide is one of the only good books for large animal anatomy. VSS stocks it even though it isn't a "Recommended" book.
For Histo, the notes and pics on the CD ROM are very thorough, so you really don't need a textbook... I bought "Wheater's Functional Histology" and found it very helpful, though- good big color photos and nice diagrams. I used it as much for Organology 2nd semester as I did for Histo 1st semester.
The Radiology book is great and I used it all the time. Quizzes are open book, so obviously having the book is handy. You also have a lot more radiology courses ahead, so the book will be useful beyond 1st semester.
I stink at biochem, so I really needed the textbook. I used it a lot and found it helpful, but am planning on selling it as I don't think I'll ever use it again. I used my undergrad biochem book too, but the recommended text has a much narrower focus, so it had a lot less extraneous information and was easier to study from. Not everyone bought it, though, so it depends on whether or not you are a textbook-using person.
Stethoscopes are a bit of an enigma to me, as I've never used mine enough to decide if it's better or worse than anyone else's.... But here's what I know from what I've read: Littmann's are the most common type that people get, with the Cardiology III (I believe?) being the fancy-schmancy most expensive one. Some people say you should get the fancy one now, since it's best to learn on what you'll actually be using as a doctor, while others say learn on the crummy ones, and then it's easier to hear things when you go up to a higher quality scope. I decided to go against popularity and get a Harvey Elite (
http://www.allheart.com/ty5079elite.html). More expensive than the cheaper Littmann's, but less expensive than the Cardio III. Someone on the Allopath forum said he thinks it's a much nicer scope than the Littmann's, and I really liked it when I tried it out. We don't use them too much first year, so I guess I can't say if its clarity is any better or worse than anyone else's scope, but I like it. Lots of people say you just have to try them and see what works best for you. And talk to vets you've worked with, they're usually good resources for that too.
Not sure if they included it in your packet, but there is a dress requirement in the large animal hospital (where you'll be spending a lot of your first semester)... Maroon scrub tops and black pants or khakis. A nice thing to know before you go to buy scrubs! Although if you join SCAVMA you get a free set a maroon scrubs.
Have fun first years!!
