Do minors have much of an impact on the application process? I ran the degree audit on my school's website and saw that by adding only 1 course (3 credits), I can have a minor in "Health, Medicine, and Human Values" when I graduate. My schedule plan isn't overloaded (only 14 credits in the semester I'll be taking the MCAT~really easy courses), so I figured it'd be okay to add it to my last semester.

Though a minor can enrich your overall learning experience in college, they will in no significant way impact your application.

It might not help, but if it doesn't deter from what you need to get done, I'd say do it for the heck of it.

That was my original thought, but I don't wanna appear like I'm overdoing it, if that makes sense? I was also considering a major in Public Health, so I figured this would be another way to pursue some of these topics. I just don't want them to think I'm doing the minor to impress them; I'm doing it because it's my favorite subject and I have a genuine interest in it. But I might be too presumptuous with assuming what the adcoms think.

if you're a 2015er, that means you haven't started undergrad yet. how are you already planning your senior year? 😕

We have a degree planning tool online that lets us plan each semester for the duration of our degree. After you pick and choose the courses, you can run an audit to make sure you meet all of the requirements for your degree, and to make sure that you have all the prereqs completed. Unless it drastically changes (which I don't think it will), I have my entire schedule planned out.

woah. I would have gone insane if I had had that at my disposal as an incoming freshman. either way, don't put all your eggs in one basket too early 🙂 you never know what crazy awesome class/subject you're going to find that you'll want to take some random classes to explore... that you *gasp* didn't plan into your schedule (for me: linguistics). life happens!

I had my whole degree path planned out summer before undergrad. You better believed it changed BIG time. My major changed so many times! HaHa I started as Bio, then was Bio and psych, and now I am changing it to liberal arts and psych.

Looking back, planning that much then was a waste of time! I realized I hated the canned labs being a Bio major (A lab rat can guess the outcome of the lab by reading the methods section). And psych turned out to be fasinating.

Life is a journery. Sometimes it is fun to just go with the flow.

I'll let it change if I'm not happy. My general ed classes will certainly be different, but there are major requirements that I think will remain the same. I honestly don't see myself doing anything else. Never have, but that certainly isn't to say I won't in the future.

I think the best advice I can give you is to do only med school prereqs and gen ed courses your first year. It gives you time to explore without backtracking. Remember, medical school will let you have any major as long as you do the prereqs. Don't feel like you have to be a science major.

I was 100% certain I was going to double major in bio/chem when I started undergrad then go to med school.... at the end of 4 years, I was a rehab science major who was starting my occupational therapy degree... and, 2 years later, I'm starting med school in 1.5 months. Life happens, man. Be open to it 🙂
