No...technically, you don't have to get a computer. It all depends on how you study best. If you are interested though, I have a Lenovo X61 Tablet (and I'd say probably 5 or 6 of us do) and I love it (we all do). For whatever computer you get, you'll definitely want the longer battery and as much space as you can get (mine is around 106Gb). The OneNote files we all use to organize our notes are gargantuan files, so you'll need the space. You might also looking into getting a separate drive to dump stuff on to if you don't have a desktop or something already. Let me know if I can answer anything else.

So I just got my interview invite for March 2nd...yea!!!! I was wondering if any current vet students know if there are a lot of IS applicants this year or not. If I remember, I don't think I ever interviewed that late. Thanks I'm just curious. 😛

Thanks so much!!! As of now, I've been accepted to Colorado, Oregon, Cornell, and Missouri. Missouri is truly my #1 choice at this time. Not only for the school itself but I liked Columbia too! However, I've had interviews at Purdue, Auburn, and Washington State, so I'm to wait a couple of weeks until I make a decision.

On a side note, is there a dog park or a nice place to take my dog to play off-leash in Columbia? Thanks!
 
Just thought I’d give my input on here too…
krobDVM: I’m in the first year class and several of us have tablets. Some have the Hp model but most have the dell tablet which you can buy through the school for about $2000. It is expensive but if you like taking notes on the computer, I would definitely recommend it.
W2BVet: I’m not sure how may IS there are but I can tell you I interviewed last year on March 5th and got my acceptance letter on the 15th…Good luck!
BlistexWorks: there are several dog parks in Columbia. I do not have a dog here but have many friends who take there dogs to these parks often. There are also lots of trails in Columbia.
Congrats to all those accepted and good luck to those who have yet to interview…let me know if you have any specific questions!

There are lots of dog parks...Grindstone Nature Area, Twin Lakes, and I think Cosmo all allow dogs off leash. Every other park that I'm aware of is very welcoming to pets. At Stephens Lake (not technically an off-the-leash park, but if you're dog is well-behaved you would probably be fine), there are lots of open areas where you could throw frisbees/balls/whatever. There's also the Katy Trail which extends from STL to KC and I have seen people running with their dogs out there (the best part of the trail is supposed to be around Columbia).

has anyone called missouri for an update about the "under further review" people? from an earlier post, 40 out of 88 interviewees (OOS) were accepted, so i assume that we'd be after those 48 not accepted interviewees...
 
I would call the school to find out, but I would assume already that the all 40 OOS students have received their acceptances. I don't know if that means you are wait listed (if that is the case, there is a glimmer of hope then). I know that the IS students are interviewing right at the beginning of March. Again, here is my hypotheses on all this (once more, jaydog's list of assumptions)
1.) OOS students have all been selected and rest are getting rejection letters or wait listed
2.) Not all OOS have been selected and may still try to decide on the few remaining OOS student spots.
3.) There is no three.....:meanie:
 
so i was impatient and just called. she said that we will be ranked soon, maybe in a month? and itll be like an alternate list, b/c with the extra seats, they want to have more people lined up so they can definitely fill those seats.

Are you talking about IS or OOS being ranked in a month?

W2B, did you find out how many IS applicants are being interviewed this year? If not, I'll try to find out.

My personal favorite is Turkey Farm Lake across the street from the MU turkey farm. It's a few exits east of Columbia on the route Z exit just like half a mile north and half a mile east of I-70. There's rarely anyone there and it's a pretty good fishing lake too about half to three quarters of a mile walk from where you park. I don't go to Twin Lakes and Garth because there are too many clueless owners who can't control their dogs (Twin Lakes is like a few acres, Garth is about an acre), but Grindstone, which is more of an off leash "area" than a dog park, is not bad when it's not too crowded. Here's some pictures of either my dogs or my previous foster dogs out the various parks:

Hey...no I haven't found out how many IS. I hope the later interview date doesn't mean more applicants...I'm just doing my normal over analyzing thing...I can't help it!! When is your interview date? Good Luck!!

My interview is tomorrow! I know someone who is interviewing the week of the 9th. That should be the last week of interviews.

How would I go about getting a student job at the college of veterinary medicine, so I could make my $2000 for MO residency? Who would I need to talk to? Do they even offer jobs to incoming first-year vet students for the summer? Sorry about all the questions!

Your job doesn't have to be at the CVM, but here are a few ways to do it with jobs through the school (there are lots of other ways in addition to these). You don't really need to be worrying about them till you got here though (except with Clin Path which you'd have to probably start training in the summer)

Small Animal ICU: there are applications for this shortly after the beginning of the school year. Good experience, but not always the best hours.

Clin Path: in the incoming student packet sent out the C/O 2013, there should be a flier about being a clin path student. It's a 2-year commitment, and sometimes you have some bad hours, but it pays pretty well. It's a really good way to start learning some stuff about blood work, cytology, etc. before Clin Path class. The Clin Path clinicians are a good group of people too.

Research: There is a program called Veterinary Research Scholars Program (VRSP) that is a summer research program. It pays $4,000 for roughly 6 weeks of work and you presenting your research at a symposium. I did this (although I did not have to gain residency) and found it to be very easy for the amount that we were paid. For more information, go to http://vetmed.missouri.edu/vrs/ . The contact person is Dr. Craig Franklin...he's awesome, and if you're interested in information you can't get off the website, I'm sure he'd be happy to fill you in.

And I heard from Kathy that letters will go out to IS applicants around March 16.
 
For those of you who are waiting to get accepted off of the OOS waitlist, it's inching closer to you! I was #14 and received my acceptance letter today.
 
Have any OOSers whose applications were on hold for "further review" heard anything yet?

lemme try and remember the stats kathy gave me... so an earlier post said that something like 80 some OOS were interviewed, and 40 some were accepted. so obviously we'd be after that.. and i think she said that there's about 100 people "under further review." she said i think that in the past, the smaller classes needed maybe 50-60 people until they filled the class and seh was saying now that they expanded the class, they're expecting another 40-50?? i don't know if those last numbers are exactly right... i kind of forgot. but she def. said about 100 of us will be ranked, and we could check midmarch and see if she's done, but no guarantees.
 
One way to look at the odds of an offer is to consider the interview ratio... If Missouri inteviewed 88 for 20 seats the simple math says it takes a fraction over 4 people to fill one seat.

So, if Missouri has added seats up to 35-40 OOS, apply the math. I think Kansas State interviewed around 250 for 60 spots. I'm sure it varies year to year based on a lot of factors but there is probably a bunch of scrambling going on around April 15th.

Thank you! And it was my top choice. I still feel like this is someone else's life and they're going to take it back from me any second now LOL.

Best of luck to everyone waiting to hear! I would expect a boom of opening OOS seats near the April 15th deadline, but don't forget that it's not over until August. Keep hanging on!

They said it on my waitlist letter. I was in the pack of interviewed OOS applicants, though, so that may be why I was given a rank so early.

Hello. Indeed we did add seats. I believe the Dean has approval for twenty more out of state seats which takes us to 40 total.

Screening has started but it takes a while I’m afraid. The academic screening will be completed in another couple weeks then the Adm. Comm. needs to review for their non-academic scores. That will also take a few weeks. I expect nothing before the first of April, maybe even a bit later. What that will be is an alternate number for the extra seats.

I already submitted an application to Rock Bridge Meadows Apartments and Country Mills Apartments. I feel Rock Bridge has decent space and price w/o sacrificing too much: very quiet, good parking availability, manager keeps a "tight ship", well maintained, and affordable at $465 a month. There are cheaper apartments, but I looked at apartmentreviews.com and the cheap once are not worth staying if you are a professional student. The unit has two bedrooms so I could look for an additional person to room with me to spilt the rent $232 a month plus I believe the additional electric, gas, and internet which should not get to steep in price, so it may come to $300 a month maximum. The latest update is that letters may not be ready to go out in this afternoon's mail, but they will definitely go out by tomorrow.
 
Soo the letters are here...I am on the alternate list for the alternate list!! One step closer....I can't complain!! :xf:

The letter says that because of the increase number of seats that my application will be reveiwed and ranked for the alternate list.

So does anybody know what that exactly means? I mean I understand but does that mean that I have to go through two alternate lists..the pre alternate list and the real alternate list?

Ok this may be a stupid question, but I'm from massachusetts and I finally made my decision on which vet school to attend, and I chose Missouri. Anyway, my question is, are there a lot of tornadoes in columbia?

Another question...I will be looking for a place to live and I am curious which areas of Columbia to avoid, such as what are the bad areas??
 
You might try posting this in the Veterinary forum so that current Missouri students will see it. They can probably better answer your questions.

Hi. I live 2 hours away from Columbia. I can tell you that we have a lot of severe thunderstorms beginning NOW that last through the summer. Yes, there are several tornadoes that touch down in Missouri every year, but I've lived here my whole life and the last time a tornado went through my home town I was 5. So I wouldn't base your decision on the weather....

I can't tell you about what areas to avoid though as I don't currently live in Columbia.
