I was in several fashion shows and photographed in a catalogue. I am considering listing being a model (not that it was that serious) as an extracurricular. I have already listed all of my truly meaningful/important ECs and therefore this will not be taking the spot of something considered much better and more relevant.

Anyone know how adcoms would take this? I know it won't get me into or denied from a school. My logic for potentially listing it, however, is that maybe it will make me a little bit unique.

Thoughts?

I wouldn't list it for a few reasons including potential envy and no true skill/effort/self-improvement involved.

How much time did this take? I was in a advertising photo shoot once and paid handsomely for it but it was only about 4 -5 hours including transportation to & from the shoot . If you were working the equivalent of 5 hrs /wk for for months then it might be worth listing but if it was <20 hours total it too little to take seriously.

"Not that serious"...so I'm assuming this was more of a hobby than a job? If brought up in an interview can you discuss this in an intelligent, interesting way? I don't really know how adcoms would feel about it, but I don't see it giving you a serious boost and some people might still have that "model=airhead" mentality.

Thanks for your advice and questions.

I worked about 2-3 hours a week for about 6 weeks. While I was professionally photographed and featured in a catalogue, I did not receive monetary compensation. I did it partly for fun, but mostly because one of my good friends was intimately involved with the operation and asked me for help.

Agreed that it didn't take any skill/effort, at least at my level. Again, I thought the potential positive was that it was slightly unique. I definitely wouldn't pretend that it makes me a better person/doctor/student/etc.

It's fine. I have had students who have been fashion models. Makes for interesting interview questions.

You could list fashion as a hobby and talk about your modeling gigs in the description. I think that would be interesting.

It should probably be fine then.

Anything you mention in your application is fair game to be discussed in interviews. Adding this is just BEGGING the interviewer to focus on it. Do you really want it to potentially overshadow more important accomplishments during the interview? That being said, it will make you more unique.

I would only add it as a sort of curve-ball if your application is weak. Otherwise, I would leave it off. Remember that medical school faculty are often surprisingly uptight.

I brought up my involvement in fashion during my application. I did modeling for fundraisers for a charity based clothing company. Fashion came up during actually came up during one of my interviews. My interviewer and I were actually talking about my dean's fashion that day (I was accepted, though I did make sure to complete the dean on his knot choice).

If it means something to you, and you had some impact, then I'd talk about it.

The extent to which this applies to the OP depends on how serious his/her work was, but anyone who has actually been involved in serious modeling would strongly disagree with you. Have you never watched ANTM? Modeling isn't a cakewalk.
