In L.A. many of the child psychiatrist have told me it is easy to go private and fill your practice rather quickly. They told me that it is reasonable for a child psychiatrist who does this and works over 60hrs a week to make $300,000+ a year. I have heard this more than once. How accurate is that?

well in LA, everyone is screwed up, and the kids are no exception. they all need ritalin and similar drugs, so you will be in high demand.

Well, if you want to fill up your 60 hours with 15 minute "med-checks"/30-45 min. initial evals. and work the assembly-line of psychopharm...yes...you will make probably in excess of 250K. But...for how long you will stand doing this...I guess, it depends on where your interests are.

i heard the same from a child psychiatrist in Los angeles that the income in the private sector averages near 300,000. this is primarily because of the shortage of child psychiatrists. but like with most things, i'm sure things will level off after enough people sniff out the money and get into the field. already i know of three guys that were set on particular fields, and now they are pretty sure on child psychiatry.

I'm not so sure about that leveling off. Child Psychiatry has been in shortage for a long time now. People just do not go to med school to become a doctor that is confused with a psychologist. There is too little respect in psychiatry for it to ever become the "cool" field to do.
