MPH 2020: Applied, Accepted, Rejected, Waitlisted

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Which public health school has the lowest acceptance rate for its full-time, residential MPH programs? UNC for out-of-state applicants? Harvard? Yale? Hopkins?

Additionally--although it is very unlikely such statistics are publicly available-- what are the chances of getting accepted into top 5 programs as a non-MD? It seems like Hopkins and Harvard, for example, set the GPA and GRE bar much lower for their MD applicants than for their non-MD applicants. A person with an MD can have astonishingly mediocre GRE scores and still get into one of those schools whereas a person who doesn't have an MD might have 90th percentile scores and STILL not get accepted... I have noticed this trend in previous years' Student Doctor Network threads.
Hey there, not an expert on those stats, but for Hopkins and Harvard they’re around 45%. Yale stats seem to be harder to find, but I’ve seen a solid 25% passing by a lot on this forum. However, what the people at Harvard have told me more than once (admissions and students) is to not focus too much on the stats. Usually, it’s quite clear if your candidature passes the bar or not, and there are little applications with doubts.

I’m an MD, so never really looked into options of applying as a non-MD. I don’t think that the bar is put higher for non-MD’s for what I’ve heard, especially because these schools care so much about student diversity. But I assume that without a grad school degree, GRE and GPA are the only real indicators to see if a student can handle the courseload. And I can imagine that for a non-MD it may be harder to access the same PH-opportunities as we do.
But I’m sure, if you have a solid candidature that shows leadership potential and initiative you’re a good candidate!
Good luck!

Excited to be a member of this forum. I've been following up for quite some years now, and finally found the courage this year to apply for an MPH at my dream school, Harvard.

I have some minor questions, I was hoping you guys could help me out with.
- Do international applicants get rejection or acceptance letters on the same rolling basis like domestic applicants? Starting to worry a bit since I haven't heard anything about a Columbia interview yet 🙁
- Has anyone heard anything back yet from Berkeley?
- Did I aim to high with only applying to top-10 schools?

- And then my most pressing question at the moment, I recently got accepted for a 2-year research fellowship at Harvard Medical School for the term 2020-2022. Updating this in SOPHAS might harm my non-Harvard applications. But do you think it might be a good idea to let the Harvard admissions office know? Or could this potentially harm my Harvard application as well, considering they may think I'm less dedicated to the MPH now.
Hey guys, happy to be on this forum and not having to go through this experience all by myself.

my stats are in the quoted post
Thanks!

When you do a dual degree MPH/MBA is the MBA in healthcare management or a general MBA?

any DMD who have done a MPH? where in your career are you now?
i'm planning to move to the boston area after residency for family reason and hoping be get into the best school i can so Harvard would be my #1 as it's a perfect mix of location and good program. I'm canadian if that changes anything.

i don't know how they look at grade: undergrad gpa is stellar (4.0/4) but DMD is average for my class (3.3/4) and i got most of my lower grades in practical classes so i don't feel it reflect well my school abilities well. Could i make up for this with a excellent GRE score or will my gpa always hold me back?

Admitted to UT Health for Health Promotion! I submitted 12/1 and finalized letters of Rec on 12/9 so they’re definitely turning apps around quickly. Yay for a first acceptance ☺
Same here!! Mine was received on Thursday so it was a 24 hour turn around time, I was shocked

If you applied to Columbia, check your application portal for the supplemental questions tab. I filled mine out on SOPHAS but the link just appeared on my portal and almost all of them did not save for some reason. They say it's important to submit if you would like to be considered for funding!

^^^I'm starting to wonder if this whole issue with supplemental question responses disappearing or not going all the way through the system for Columbia is a fault of SOPHAS. I'm worried that other schools may not get my complete responses for the supplemental questions if it's really a SOPHAS error 🙁

Harvard and Hopkins’ MPH degree is directed for professionals, not just MDs. Like, anyone with an advanced degree (JD for example). They have research focused degrees for people who are coming out of undergrad: Harvard’s SM degree and Hopkins’ MSPH degree. Your chances out of undergrad are better suited for the research degrees.

Notes for GWU Financial Aid Info:

Cost of Attendance: "a reasonable budget," cannot award more than this reasonable estimate for costs associated with education, used to determine maximum aid eligibility (this is greater than just tuition and fees) Includes housing and cost of living.

Merit Aid: Your application is used to determine merit-based aid, varies between $7,500 to $30,000 per year, you will receive an award email with award requirements (Dec 15th deadline for this)

Need-Based Aid: CSS Profile with College Board determines need based aid, if you're under 26 parent info is included, varies from covering 25% of need to 50% of need, school code is 9608. Differs from FAFSA in that FAFSA considers you independent once you are a grad student, while CSS requires you to be 26 to be considered independent. "Small fee associated with this" -- can reach out to office to make sure this is useful for you. Doesn't help if you are doing an online program!

First Generation Grant: For first person in family to attend college, indicated on SOPHAS application, varies between $3,000 and $5,000

Tauber Scholarship: For family history of service in WWII, can send email to [email protected] with Tauber Scholarship in subject line.

GA Opportunities: Various opportunities to work with professors as a GA/GRA and receive a salary, hard to do before you actually start, usually after 1st semester. Be proactive and take time to get to know professors and their projects to determine which projects would be of interest.

Coverdell Fellowship: For former Peace Crop volunteers, total funding package of $30,000 over 2 years, separate application that is sent yo you within 2 weeks of receiving your admissions notice, for more info email Assistant Dean Heather Renault at [email protected]. Don't get Coverdell and merit-based.

Yellow Ribbon Program: Enhanced education benefits thru the VA (maximum contribution of $31,150) can visit Military and Veteran Services website for more info.

Federal Loans: FAFSA is required, school code is 001444. Unsubsidized loans ranging between $20,500 and $33,000, additional eligibility may be available for the summer term, interest rate of 6.08$. Can accept/decline on GWeb account. Need to complete MPN/entrance counseling. If starting in Fall, do 2020-2021 FAFSA, but for earlier, do 2019-2020. Graduate PLUS loans allows for up to the cost of attendance, soft credit check, 7.08% interest rate. Need to complete Supplemental Graduate Loan Questionnaire for PLUS, with separate MPN.

Private/Alternative Loans: You choose your lender, consider variable vs. fixed interest rates, better rate with cosigner, requirements for forbearance/deferment, discounts for good grades. Not discount for Federal Loan forgiveness.

You can schedule 30-minute appointments (phone or in person) on their financial aid website under "contact." Can direct Financial Aid questions to [email protected] and Admissions Questions to [email protected].

Q&A:

-Differences between Masters/PhD/DrPH program financial aid: Masters applicants automatically considered for merit based, then need-based if you send in CSS. Might be invited to apply to scholarships. Doctoral applicants have a different financial aid package. Masters should get their financial aid within 2 weeks (send an email if you don't get it in this time frame) while Doctoral applicants usually get them sooner. Whether or not you get a scholarship you should get an email.

-Merit Based vs Need Based: Fees that don't have to be paid back. "Good money." Exhaust this first before thinking about loans.

-CSS (when, age 26...?): The day you turn 26, that's when you're considered an independent student (don't want your parent info). If you fill-out the CSS when you are 25.5, you still have to include your parent info. You can wait until you are admitted before completing it to. You can also reach out before doing so if they decide you don't need to spend the money on it if it won't benefit you.

-If you don't get merit your first year: Won't be reconsidered for merit for subsequent years, but you can apply to specific scholarships. You can get need based aid in subsequent years though (for instance, if you turn 26).

-Are international students eligible for need based/merit based aid: Yes, all students are eligible.

-How are merit awards determined? Take into account all statistics (undergrad/grad/professional/international GPA, GRE score). Inputted into a formula.

You are incredible thanks so much for taking these notes and sharing them!!!

UNC school of public health doesn’t consider residency for graduate admissions. Harvard has stats on their website showing the number of applicants and accepted for each program. If I remember correctly, for the MPH 65 the acceptance rate last year was about ~30 percent for domestic students, lower for international students.

That’s not true about UNC. Only 1/3 of their admitted MPH students may be out of state

Can you share the link for Harvard? I’ve never seen that before

The questions have just showed up in my portal as well, even though I did them in SOPHAS and they saved (I can see them in my pdf). Are people just re-doing them, or are you getting emails asking you to? Thanks!

I specifically asked an admissions officer at UNC when visiting last spring, I’m not sure where your information is from!

The same thing happened to me. I answered all the questions in SOPHAS and it showed up in my application pdf. But the new link in the portable has some responses missing. I just answered them again and resubmitted it

To be honest I do not have the highest of hopes for most of these places besides Hofstra and then obviously UT. My GRE is eh and I have very minimal public health experience compared to others. I will be perfectly happy going to UT though I am so grateful I got in its unbelievable.

Same, I checked a dozen times before submitting on SOPHAS and they show up on the PDF, just not the actual columbia portal. I just filled them back out and resubmitted 🙂

After re-reading my personal statement for Yale at least 25 times, having my mother, partner and best friend re-read the statement two times each, no one caught a significant typo. I said "I studies....." instead of "I studied....." I am only catching it now as I use the Yale statement as a template for my next statement. Ugh!

Proofread your personal statements everybody!!!

I really think small mistakes like that will go unnoticed. From what I understand, they just skim your statement.

Hi, everyone! Thanks for the help and I'm so glad to participate in this forum. I just sent my GRE, which I took today, to the school (although it still normal, I tried really hard to have this score🙁)
Hoping we all can get the offer from our dream schools!
Happy winter break! :cat::cat::cat:

I think something small like this will likely be overlooked. Adcoms have to read hundreds of statements and while it is a possibility they will catch this error it is more likely that their brains will actually process it as "studied". 🙂

If the typo was overlooked by you, your friends, and your family every time then I would bet money that an adcom skimming your essay would miss it, too 🙂

Really? Did you hear that in a information session?
One of the professors at my university went to Harvard SPH and knows many people on their admissions/has dealt with their admissions and the admissions at my school, that's what she said. I mean, of course it varies, though. It may make or break an admission decision if you're neck & neck with someone. But even then... I don't think a small typo like that would be a huge deal. If it was overall poorly written, I think that's a different story.

I applied to Emory MPH Health Policy and Management department and my application status says “Application Incomplete” however there are no “to-do’s” on the to-do list section. Is this happening with anyone else? Is it required to select additional programs to send your app to?
I don't think it's required but it is strongly recommended. Did that incomplete message just pop up or has it been like that for awhile?

Wouldn’t worry too much. I don’t think committee members read every essay, word for word, especially with thousands of applications coming in each cycle. I had a few typos on my GWU statement and was still accepted. Could be a case by case basis, but try not to get caught up in it, what’s done is done! You got this!

It’s been there since I made the portal. But I can’t figure out what is missing!
That's strange! I would call to check if it's a mistake and review the requirements for the general MPH program (I don't think HPM had any additional requirements)

Same thing is happening to me! I applied for Global Epi and your application is automatically forwarded to general Epi if you're not accepted so I didn't name a second a choice. I don't know what is incomplete?

Has anyone done their HPM interview for Columbia yet and have any advice? I just scheduled mine for this Wednesday

I experienced the same 'Application Incomplete' status and emailed them about it last week. They said " Please know your application has been routed for review and you are not missing any items. Please disregard the status as it may be a glitch in the system.". So I think if you got the email that you're routed for review, the incomplete is likely a glitch, otherwise I'd encourage anyone to reach out to SPH Admissions as well! Hope this helps.

Accepted to GWU (MCH)!!

I wanted to share my stats for those of you who, like me, do not have outstanding test scores or GPA. I was getting worried and sure I wouldn't get in as I had been under review since 10/15 and so many of you who applied after me were hearing about your admissions. Do not give up hope!!

Anyone still waiting to hear from Columbia about an interview for HPM? They've had my app for about a month and I'm starting to get nervous... although I know they don't send decisions out until late January so there is still a lot of time.

Harvard mid February to mid March
Dartmouth's website states by Feb 1st if you applied by December 1st.

I have received an email from Yale telling me that I would have to answer 3 video questions. Did anyone else receive this? I have no idea what to expect. I am an international and applied to the accelerated MPH in Health Policy. Any advice highly appreciated.

I recieved that too, but got accepted before I could do it... so I didn’t do it ‍

So probably just being impatient, but I’m a little unclear. For Berkeley/UNC/Columbia and other schools with a “supplemental application”, is this where decision information would come from? Or is there another email/login direct from the department to look for? Applied on sophas 12/1 and confirmed receipt via the supplemental apps, but wanted to make sure I wasn’t missing anything.

I saw my decision letter for UNC on the supplemental portal. I’d assume for other schools it would be the same or by email first
