MPH 2020: Applied, Accepted, Rejected, Waitlisted

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
rejected by yale. the admissions office reached out to me to see if i was willing to retake the GRE because my quant score was low (149), and i declined after giving it some thought because of financial issues and because i had already been admitted to brown (i didn't tell them that)...they said they really liked my application otherwise. c'est la vie.

with that being said, i've officially committed to brown for the fall! can't wait 🙂
Which program did you apply to?

Congrats!!

Did you receive access to the portal before you were admitted via email? I've been trying to check via portal but nowhere can I find a portal in my emails! If you did have access before getting admitted, would you mind sharing the link to it?

Thank you!! When we applied we had to submit two apps, one with the Berkeley graduate division, that was where my status updated. Login

is anyone having trouble uploading documents to the jhu financial aid portal? i keep getting an error message.

Is anyone still waiting for Columbia’s financial aid? i have been waiting for 3 weeks now
Yes, and I got admitted almost 3 weeks ago as well. And it's been about a week since my financial aid portal updated with the "we are pleased to offer you..." in the awards section then it's blank below that lol. I haven't received any scholarships for any of my programs so far so I'm getting really anxious!!

I will be waiting until after accepted students day to officially commit, but I can say with about 90% certainty that I’ll be choosing GW!
I work full time in the DC area right now in healthcare consulting so I’ll be going to school part time with the goal of graduating in May 2023. I spoke with my employer today just to confirm that they’re okay with me needing to take some 3pm classes, and I got their blessing!

Anyone else choosing GW (especially for MCH), please feel free to DM me!

Wow was just accepted to Yale SBS, I really can't believe it considering they had taken so very long with my application! Very grateful to have received all these acceptances, now it's up to ME to decide where to go!!! Time to whip out the pro con lists lol

I emailed Columbia finaid today and Hopkins finaid yesterday same thing.
If they don't respond by Friday morning I'm probably going to call... It's just such an important factor in decisions
Please let us know what they say 🙂 I am more worried about Columbia since it seems as though Hopkins has barely started sending out scholarships, but it seems as though nearly everyone has heard from Columbia at this point.

I think someone last week spoke to them on the phone and they mentioned they were really behind with scholarship awards, right? Also, I've only seen a handful of people who have heard from financial aid and an even smaller number who were actually awarded scholarships vs. just loans.

I know it sucks waiting, especially logging into the portal and seeing the cost of attendance, but I'm sure it will come soon!!! (For the record, I am also waiting to here from financial aid)

Yes, I spoke to them last week and they said they were running behind on awards, but they had already handed out a lot as well. I'm mostly just curious to see if they are completely done handing out merit scholarships at this point and if it's going to be loans when it does update. It definitely makes me feel better that I'm not the only one waiting!

Does anyone know anything about the quality of Pitt’s Epi program? I’m interested in global reproductive and perinatal issues.

Has anyone heard back from UCLA or UC Berkeley for Epi/Biostats?
I am on campus and understand that none of the results have been release and it will be all released together for UCB. Though, oddly enough, seems like HSB is separate.

Decisions are made and we are just waiting! Also, I asked UCLA last week for Biostats and they said the results would be out this week.
Good luck!

Did anyone else sign up for Columbia's admitted student class visits?! I signed up for one tomorrow and was going to shadow a student, got a confirmation about it earlier this week but just got a very bland email saying that simply all class visits are cancelled tomorrow. No explanation as to why. Anyone else?? Very confused and stressed bc I am literally flying up to NY tomorrow morning for this class visit and for the admitted student day on Friday! Hoping that too is not cancelled?

I believe it's because of the Corona virus :/ I'm up at Cornell and that's what we've heard, potentially classes being cancelled and moving to online versions for the time being

I heard through the grapevine that my university was considering to move all classes online after spring break. I thought it was just a weird rumor, but seeing your post makes me think it's even more likely that all universities are moving in that direction?

Honestly wouldn't be at all surprised :s

Ugh I suspected it was because of coronavirus! I was honestly wondering how coronavirus would affect these admitted student events! But figured that if it did impact them, I would know sooner than 12 hours before I board a flight there lol. Booked these flights ahead of any real coronavirus concern, and didn't get insurance on them...regrets !!! Also wondering what this will mean for future admitted student days, as you said, other universities following suit... was banking on campus visits to help me decide where to go!!

Yeah, it sucks they didn't reach out sooner.. I'm sorry this is happening :/! I'm also wondering how it might affect future admitted students days...I guess we'll just have to stay tuned 😳

Doesn't seem like anyone was really prepared for this :/

Same situation here, my flight to NYC is tonight. I just called Columbia and ask if they will cancel reception and admitted student day as well. They told me they will decide by the end of today and give me a call. I suggest you call them as soon as possible, so they know there are more students like us that need them to make a decision soon.

I reached out to UNC about Friday’s events and everything seems on for now! Although checking in to my flight it looks very empty, so definitely fewer travelers

I asked my friend who is in her 2nd year at Columbia (pop fam) if there have been any class cancellations and she said there have been none so far. She is also volunteering for Friday's accepted students day and hasn't heard anything about it being cancelled.

Yes I called them around 5 and she told me to go ahead and “postpone my travel plans”...I am still going as I know a few people at Columbia already and they said their classes are still on so if all our events get canceled I can still at least walk around campus with them at the very least. Odd that they gave us differing opinions! Let me know if you hear any new updates

Admitted students reception and admitted students day are canceled 🙁 my flight leaves at 6 AM tomorrow morning. should I try to postpone or cross my fingers and take the free trip to NYC? :nailbiting:

Yeah scratch that ^^ it's going to be virtual instead (as noted above). Sorry folks 🙁

never mind, my contact at Columbia recommends I cancel all accommodations. Good luck to those of you choosing to still travel!

I was able to cancel my flight on United and get reimbursed the trip so if you still have standing plans, try your best to get ahead of it tonight!

Is anyone considering still going to Columbia tomorrow?? Do you think campus would be open if I planned on walking around / meeting professors etc? Are there any groups of people already there planning on meeting at all to perhaps watch the virtual event together?

My friend still has classes there tomorrow so the campus itself will definitely be open! I will likely try to go visit still as I am unable to cancel my flight

I called them and my flight with United was cancelled but the agent was unclear about a refund. She asked me to submit a refund request. Were you asked to do the same thing?

I ended up getting a full credit for the cost of the flight that is valid for one year from the time I booked, I wasn't asked to submit a refund request though!

Thank you! Did you also have a basic economy ticket? I might need to call back

Took a few Ls today:
1) Columbia Admitted Student Day Cancellation - notified 5 hours before my flight and after their offices were basically closed
2) Alaska Airlines partial refund (lost $125) after being on hold for 40 min and arguing with a rep and having to request for a manager
3) Rejected from UC Berkeley

I’m probably committing to UCLA and gonna be a double Bruin, tired of this entire ****show

Interesting Columbia said their bottle neck is the scanning of FAFSA into the system. I'm not sure if that's specific to me or a general issue for everyone. I was also told that I could expect a finaid decision through next week. I got my acceptance decision about 3 weeks ago for perspective.

And for Hopkins they're saying 4-6 weeks from app submit which for me, submitting 2/18 would be last two weeks of March.

Does anyone know if Hopkins or Yale admitted student days have changed? I think that's my next thing to follow-up up with lol

Hi everyone! I am looking at applying to MPH programs next cycle (starting fall 2021) and am specifically looking at a MPH/MPA dual degree. Do any of you have experience applying to these programs or have any thoughts and insights about the dual degree at different schools? So far I know Brown, Columbia, NYU, Colorado SPH, and the University of Utah (my in-state option) have MPH/MPA programs. Any others I should look into? Sorry, I know this isn't application related but it seemed like a good forum to get information from. Thanks in advance!

Hey there! Was just scrolling through old posts here to see if I could find more info about MPH/MPA and saw your post! I was just accepted to the Brown MPH/MPA and am wondering if it's worth the extra course load and $. Did you ever get more info about the value of the dual degree?

I have committed to Hopkins, and I know their days have not changed. I'll be there on April 3rd!
Yale's days have not changed to my knowledge. However, since I have accepted Hopkins and declined acceptance to Yale, I may not be receiving info anymore

Can I message you on Hopkins vs Yale?

Has anyone applied to UC Berkeley's online MPH? If so, have you heard back yet?

time for me to start appealing aid!!! question for those who have done it: how did you reference other schools' offers? did you saying X school gave me Y dollars? did you say X school will cost me Y dollars after the aid offered? did you attach the other school's award letter? any insight is much appreciated!

Has anyone heard any COVID-19-related cancellations for NYU or Hopkins' Admitted Students Days? I fly out tomorrow night and it would be too late to refund it, so I'll end up going to the two cities anyways.
