MPH Fall 2014: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just got a 25,000 merit scholarship from Columbia!
Did you get the scholarship offer before or after receiving/completing the financial aid survey? Did you even get the financial aid survey? Did anybody else?

Thanks, and congratulations that is amazing!

I got the survey, too (but no other news about the financial aid).

Hi, I got a $30,000 scholarship from Columbia (couldn't believe it!), and was notified via email a few hours after the Financial Aid survey (i.e. I hadn't filled it out yet) came in last Thursday night US time. Hope that helps!

I haven't heard anything either..just one or two generic Attend U invitations

Yeah I've been mildly stalking this thread for awhile now and it seems like everyone was hearing back from them! I've been trying to be patient but UofM is my top choice so the uncertainty has been slowly eating away at me. And for some reason, repeatedly refreshing the wolverine access website has gotten me nowhere. I'll give them a call and see what I can find out. Thanks so much for the advice you guys! Fingers crossed!

I would LOVE to hear how it goes if you contact them... I just sent the Coordinator an E-mailing asking about the status of my app.

I am more anxiously waiting for UW HS, I am thinking abut E-mail/calling their offices. Has anyone else reached out?

Just got a letter from them a few minutes ago that I was recommended for admission to the Epidemiology MSPH program 🙂

Congrats! I just got an email as well. I was accepted to the MSPH Epidemiology program! I'm excited but they couldn't offer an assistantship at this time 🙁 Without any form of funding, I don't think I'll be able to go. It still feels good to get an acceptance though. Were you offered any funding at all?

I called them sometime last week. They were able to give me a decision and feedback on my application. I was rejected because my interests didn't match the program so the coordinator put me in touch with another program and I was able to resubmit my application for reconsideration that same day.

Wow, that sounds very helpful. Just to clarify was this for Michigan or Washington?

Just received a financial aid estimate from GWU... looks like they allow you loans to cover full cost of attendance. Thought I'd let you guys know!

Congrats!! Did you see this on the Umich site or did they email you? I got the same thing for HMP and like others have said, its probably a formality.

Sorry for the late response! I received this message in an email, and then received another email the next day with the official decision. I saw the decision on Wolverine Access later that day.

I received the same thing but was a bit confused about where federal aid would come in?

I am currently torn between my top two choices (UMich & UWash). I was curious to know how others are approaching the process of selecting which program is best for them? Does anyone know of any good resources (besides the schools' websites)?

Officially accepted to University of Michigan on 2/20, and accepted to Boston University on 2/20 as well (also accepted to GWU on 2/10)-- all Epid. Pretty set on attending Michigan, but still waiting to hear back from UIC (Epid) and NYU (Community and International Health). I was wondering what folks know/think about the NYU program compared to Michigan's? Is there a separate thread for these types of questions? I'm just not too familiar with NYU's program but am interested based on what I've read on their website.

can someone offer some advice as to why I haven't seen one single acceptance yet?

i wouldn't say it was lack of experience, maybe there was an issue with your essays or recommendations? if there isn't a glaring problem with those, i'm sure you should be seeing some acceptances soon. which track(s) did you apply to?

Hi tranm3, I found out I am waitlisted for UW HS last week, but since it's my top choice I took advice from this forum and contacted Laura the coordinator and asked a few polite questions about the wait list process (how long? are they ranked? etc.) and she got back to me within a few days and was really nice and informative. she gave me more insight into the process than I asked for! I feel like their admin staff is really nice and good about answering questions so definitely email/call!

Those are my top choices too! UW especially, but since UM accepted me it does look pretty appealing to me now. I got to talk on the phone with a recent grad from UW and it was very helpful! She was actually referred to me by the professor I did a phone interview with. I like reading the student blogs from both the schools too.

Hi everyone,

Undergrad School: The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
Undergrad GPA: 3.3 (Overall Combined)
Major/Minor: Sociology, International Finance and Marketing (Strong background; major from transfer school)
GRE (including date taken): Rather not disclose. Not good (Low 150s)
Experience/Research (please, be brief): Graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill in Fall 2011. Worked for three nonprofit health organizations in a myriad of ways since September 2011. Two of the three are major nonprofit health brands (nationally known) and one is a smaller boutique. Have worked in development, marketing, communications, fundraising and event planning for each of these organizations. Started an online community for cancer survivors, patients and their families in '07, global reach of 11,000+ members. Highly involved in raising awareness and funds for critical health issues all through high school and college. Volunteered at children's hospital in college multiple times a week. Held numerous leadership roles in student health organizations at both universities that I attended. Will have 3+ solid years of work experience with nonprofit health brands before I start my MPH program in Fall '14 (if I get in anywhere)

Applied: Johns Hopkins University (MBA/MPH), Emory (MBA/MPH), UNC (MPH-Health Behavior), Tulane (MPH-Global Health and Development), Georgetown (Master of Science-Global Health), Duke (Master of Science- Global Health), GWU (MPH-Global Health)
Accepted:
Rejected:
UNC-Chapel Hill MPH HB (2/14), Johns Hopkins University MBA/MPH (2/24)
Waitlisted:

Is there hope for those of us who do not perform well on standardized tests, when it comes to getting into Top Program. Not wanting to waste money and take out loans to go to a mediocre MPH program.

Oh hey, nice! Thanks, I will try checking out the student blogs. If you don't mind me asking, is there a particular reason why you say UW especially? I guess Seattle is probably pretty awesome..

I bit the bullet and called UW-HS and you were right that Laura is very helpful. Unfortunately I got the bad news that I wasn't offered admission...now I just need to get to the bottom of why I never got an E-mail 😵

I emailed BU and asked why I was waitlisted and they gave me a response within that day. So email them if you would like to know 🙂

Just in case anyone was wondering, I just heard back from BU today from the waitlist. They said that they usually don't admit people from the list until after April 15th though. Good luck to everyone else who's waiting!

p.s. You have to call BU's admissions line to ask about merit-based scholarships. The financial aid office is only for need-based apps.

Did anyone else get an email about Financial Aid from Emory? It stated I have been assigned a financial aid advisor and such but this is all the news I have heard regarding admissions (except for a confirmation of receipt email in January). Is this just a standard email that goes to everyone? My OPUS account has not changed.

I deeply respect both schools and programs, but Seattle *is* one of my fav cities and personally- I'm from California so the move would be "easier" and seeing friends and family would cost less. I've been to the school campus it's gorgeous and I really felt at home there. (UMich has a beautiful campus too and SPH has a cooler building). Professionally- Seattle has a bigger population of Asian Pacific Islanders which is my research focus and UW has the internships I would want to get into. Also the HS program has a smaller cohort 40 vs Michigan's HBHE which I believe takes about 90 students (i could be wrong.)🙂

Of course....this is all depending on if I get into UW.... 🤔

I'm really sorry to hear that! But it's also totally uncool of them to not inform you....
I'm sure you have a lot of other great choices! Good luck to you! 👍

I got this e-mail as well and read something about more information being released towards the beginning of March...that and scholarship info (not too optimistic about that one) are keeping me on the edge of my seat!

I can't speak at all about Michigan and can only speak about my undergraduate experience at UW but I'm a proud Husky. The city of Seattle is an amazing place to live in, yes the weather is wet but overall I think the weather really can't be beat (we love our summers and take full advantage of it). It really is emerging as one of the "big cities" with a great food scene, good museums, shopping, pretty much any activity of interest, so it's a great city to explore and spend your free time in. The city of Seattle has pockets of diverse communities and it is interesting to see urban sprawl...so I think that there is opportunity to work with minority populations in a meaningful way.
The campus is beautiful and sprawling but I admit that the SPH facilities are a bit lackluster and might not be as fancy/new as other schools. There is a good variety of opportunities and organizations in Seattle: you have the larger ones such as the Gates Foundation and PATH and then lots of great medium/smaller ones that are well respected.

A downside (and this is just all observation/my own feelings) is that like the school carries over a public university feel...in that you have to be proactive about things and the support system isn't as strong as other schools. It can be easy to feel very daunted while at UW. I've also heard from SPH alumn that the school seems less social than others.

I received an email from Emory a few hours ago regarding scholarship info, so any information should be coming soon I think. It was personalised rather than automated so might take a bit long to send out. Hope that helps!

Have any of you applied to South Carolina/heard anything from them? 🙂

Applied Nov 11th. Accepted by email on Feb 4th into Health Servies Policy and Management MPH. SC is my home state, idk if this makes a difference.

It's so nice to see how useful this forum has become applicants! Glad I started it 🙂 Happy to see everyone is getting acceptances all around and how supportive you all are! I love it! Best of luck to everyone still waiting on admission decisions, and congrats to all of those done with the application process! The wait is almost over!

Waiting on: USC, SDSU, UCDenver, and Arizona!
Accepted: Tulane, Claremont Graduate School
Rejected: UCLA (sigh, but expected), U Texas

Hopefully you get off the waitlist! If it helps, I'm going to reject my offer (going to UC Berkeley most likely), hopefully it goes to you! You said you were from california, just wondering why you didn't consider Berkeley and UCLA (in-state tuition!) MPH programs?

For those between UW and Umich, here are my 2cents.

UMich - I did my undergrad there. I love Ann Arbor. I have several friends (including my roommate) and coworkers that did their MHSA at UMich. I think their main complaint was that the courses were too textbook heavy and not enough real-world/practical skills. Umich has a world class medical center, yet they said the SPH was total separate and they didn't get any experience in the medical center. Really weird..considering as an undergrad business major, I took several healthcare related bschool courses and had opportunities to work on real projects in the Umich medical center. That being said, the career resources and networking is pretty amazing there, especially if you want to live in the midwest. They place many students in healthcare consulting and at top hospitals.

UW-I spoke with the professor that runs the HS dept. It seems like UW is the opposite of Umich. The SPH is very well integrated with the medical center and the city and state department of public health--many of the faculty work with them and it is very much a part of the courses. However, even the Director admitted that their biggest weakness is career support. He said most students end up getting jobs through their professors' connections and the network is very heavily Seattle focused. There is not much campus recruiting/career fairs sort of thing.

That being said, I think you should really take into account where you want to live after you graduate: Midwest vs. Seattle

Thank you for your kind words.

I am actually waiting for a response from UCB, but I am a product of the UC system: Irvine for my BA, and UCLA for my MSW....I kinda wanted a very different experience. 🙂

Good luck at Berkeley!!

I got the same email. I was hopeful...for a minute.

Rejected from Emory. =(
No email, yet. Just randomly checked the OPUS site. But good luck and congratulations to everyone!

Hi @InsaneObserver ,

Sorry to hear about your rejection from Emory. Looking at your other posts, it looks like you got into some other great programs already. When was your application sent on to the EHS department? I applied to a different department, Global Health, and my application was forwarded on to the Global Health department on 02/13. From my understanding, decisions are made a bit quicker now, and not the 3-6 weeks that it says in the initial email.

So far, I've been denied by Johns Hopkins and UNC-Chapel Hill. I'm sitting, hoping, and waiting for some good news... though my optimism is slowly fading. It might be time to start applying to other non-Top 5 programs.

Undergrad School: University of Illinois - Urbana-Champaign
Undergrad GPA: 3.34 according to SOPHAS
Major/Minor: History
GradGPA (if applicable): 3.9
Grad Studies (if applicable): Began an MA program in history that I left to work in medical research

4 publications including 1 book chapter in pediatrics
3 posters in pediatrics
1 award for best educational poster

My references are two MDs and a physicist from my current job that I've done research with.

Applied: Ohio State (MS Epi), Minnesota (MPH Epi, MS Outcomes Research), UIC (MS Epi), Harvard (SM80 Epi)
Accepted: Ohio State, both Minnesota programs
Rejected: -
Waitlisted: -

Obviously like everyone else in this thread, I have not heard back yet from UIC or Harvard and am on the edge of my seat! If I don't get into UIC I will probably try to add Iowa as well, because I'm interested but burnt out on writing SOPs.

I'm interested in health literacy and health disparities, and UIC and Minnesota are really the best programs in this group for that. I think I'd like to do go on to a PhD and do academic research. But, that's what I thought about history too a few years ago and I had to get to grad school and see first-hand how bad the humanities environment really is to decide to leave. If I don't like it, my plan is to go after jobs attached to hospital research centers, because the ones I work with are starting to employ biostatisticians and medical editors for MDs to consult with them writing papers and grants. And in my experience plenty of MDs are interested in doing research but need help with stuff like study design and data management.

Good luck to everyone!

UCLA took 12 days to upload it...but got the ACCEPTANCE today

Same here! My letter was dated February 12 and I actually saw it a few days ago because I checked the status myself, but I just got the e-mail this morning.

That's awesome!! Sounds like you may be getting something, good luck to you!
