MPH Fall 2014: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
This is from someone in Berkely SPH admissions office.

"I hope this email finds you well. The Office of Student Services & Admission is currently processing admission decisions. We expect students to hear a response from Graduate Division within the coming weeks. We understand that you are anticipating your admissions decision in order to consider your graduate programs. So keep an eye out for an email notification."

Weeks?!? Really? I need an answer TODAY.

Congrats!! Were you notified at all about the scholarship prior to this?
Nope. Hadn't heard anything beyond my fafsa being received weeks ago. Just decided to log into opus today and there was a note about accepting my financial aid award in my to do stuff. As I am from Atlanta, scholarship money is definitely making Emory look good. Excited for visit emory this week 🙂 hope to see some of you there!

Check your OPUS, everyone! My financial aid is up and I was awarded a surprise scholarship!!!! 😀

Same here! I've given up on my hopes of in-state tuition, but I never realized that I could get money for having done Jumpstart as an Undergrad at Emory so at least things are evening out a bit!

I've heard great things about the REAL program at Emory, but does anyone know how hard it is to get a position as a research assistant with work study at Michigan?

What's the difference between MS in PH and MPH? I just received an email from Columbia saying that I'm better suited for their MS program considering my academic and professional backgrounds. I'm an MD. They asked if I wanted to be given MS Epi or MPH. What's your advice please?

Just got an email from Columbia with my financial aid package in it...doesn't look good at all. :-(

Yup. Just got mine too. I guess I'm covering the difference with more loans 🙁

So soon? Did you turn in that supplemental form last week?

I received the email regarding my Columbia PID and the Institutional and Supplemental App on Friday. It was unclear so I waited til Monday, which was when Columbia's office of Financial Aid sent me (and presumably everyone else) a follow up email to clarify any confusion. I filled out the app on Monday, yesterday.

Has anyone heard about scholarship or grant info from University of Michigan of North Carolina? Every week they keep telling me they expect to know by next week, and then next week comes and we repeat this cycle again and again.

Does anyone have any info on what percentage of incoming students get some sort of scholarship and about how much from these two schools? This is about the only thing that matters to me right now.

I heard Emory is typically just $4,000 for just about everyone. Not really going to make a difference for me there. Also, their staff wasn't great with following up.

HI
I am applying for August 2014, I want to know if it is very risky to apply for non CEPH accredited programs in MPH? Is online program worth spending money on? I live in Virginia and there are only 2 schools, Univ of Virginia and VCU. I can afford only in state tution fee of around 18,000/yr. Is there any school with a lesser or same fee? Pls help

For those of you who applied to the University of Michigan check your Wolverine Access. Financial aid awards should be there if you have submitted your FAFSA. I checked mine yesterday and it was there.

Oh yay! Congratulations! I'm not going to be able to make it out there for Admitted Students Day but I am going to accept because Colorado is just a better fit for me coming from Oregon. They sent me a form to fill out about a week after I got acceptance. Let me know what you decide... if you deciding on Colorado, let's chat some more! 🙂
Ok. great! I haven't gotten my official acceptance letter, but I got a call form someone in admissions and they said to accept a letter later this week! I'm really leaning towards it! It'll be nice to be out of state for 2 years...but idk how well I'll do in snow! hahah So hopefully I'll get the Western State info letter soon too!

I think it depends on the long term purpose of your academic and career. One professor used to told me MS is more research intense and you will finish the program with a thesis project. MPH is more practical intense, you will go field as the practicum and then finish your program with a capstone. MS is very good in case you want to pursue a PhD or to work the research jobs. In the other cases, I think MPH is helpful. Good luck!

By the way, do you pick up Columbia? I remember you got into JHSPH too, which school is your final choice? Funding would be a good factor I can go JHSPH or not. Hope that I will gone through the problem.

Got an acceptance from SF State last week--yay! Still no word from Berkeley's HSB concentration--like literally no word! I haven't even gotten an email saying to be patient, although I did exchange an email with the program coordinator in February so I don't *think* they've forgotten me. It's seem like there are an awful lot of people in the same position waiting on UCB...kinda ridiculous!

Obviously, I was waiting for Columbia to decide before making my final choice. I think I'm leaning towards Columbia. But what SDN members say about access to Columbia Prof's scares me. Anyway, I love scary things. Thank you for the information. I think MS will better meet my career goal.

Not sure about UNC, but Michigan has already begun to offer scholarships. It just depends on which department you're in. Check with your program's director or if there is a faculty member in the program who has contacted you maybe ask them about it.

From what I was told by current students, RA (20% and TA (10%) positions are fairly common. The only reason that those numbers aren't higher are because of preference. Not everyone wants to do research, but it is fairly easy to find a position. I'm not sure about the work study part, though.

Professors seemed to corroborate this idea as well. I asked a professor during my visit about RA positions and he said that emailing profs is easy and you get paid by the hour.

I'm so excited to meet you all going to CU Denver for the admitted students day!

I can't make it to admitted students day (still in school, spring term starts that day) but I will be moving out to Denver sometime in early August!

Well...apparently they had their new admit day this past Monday, March 17...I emailed a program coordinator and she said all decisions had been made and that we should hear very soon. Considering they've had their admit day... I'm sad.

Delphinium, yikes that really sucks...was that a new admit day for all of the MPH programs or just a specific one? Sounds like I should probably assume I didn't get in at this point.

I think it was for all programs. Another person on here posted that the acceptance packet he/she received from Cal stated an 18% acceptance rate for all programs. I do anticipate some bad news but it could still be possible.

I feel like they will but you know the main problem is that some people hold on to their acceptances knowing that they are not going to attend the university -__-. I wanted to call today and ask how long the wait-list is but I most likely will later on this week. It's definitely a long wait and i'm in the same predicament as you with it being risky but it's both of our top choices so I guess we should wait it out? But on the safe side, I would accept admissions to another university just in case and if you get off the wait-list just say that you will not be attending the university anymore (I'm hoping that we can do that lol).

Been a while but did you end up emailing the department? I was thinking about emailing them Friday and getting an update but I feel annoying cause they would've notified me if they did pull me out of the waitlist haha I'm so impatient

No :/ I apart of me wants to but idk if I just bother them :/ and haha! Me too i'm very impatient Idk what to do :/ I know they said by April 15th but I feel like someone should have at least gotten off the waitlist by now. We should both call and e-mail? It'll show interest that we really want to attend the school.

I was accepted to UCLA on Feb 4th and my online status is STILL not updated! It doesn't really matter though, as I will be going to Berkeley instead. I just want to decline so someone off the waitlist may be able to get my spot!

And Re: Berkeley vs UCLA, both great programs, it just comes down to which city you prefer as both have very strong local networks.
Yes please haha i'm waitlisted at UCLA hoping to get off soon.

Has anyone heard back from UCI/SDSU (epi track)? I feel like I've spent half of my 2014 waiting for grad school decisions... :arghh:

I also am waiting for SDSU- Health Promotion. My SOPHAS was mailed out 2/26. On the website it says they will notify at the latest by mid-may. I don't know if I can survive that long! The wait is driving me crazy!!

I guess I am late on this, but hey better late than never…
By the way, I am one of those students whose numbers are abysmal, but I have decent EC's and a pretty reasonable explanation for my poor grades. Still thought I would give these applications a shot

I'm also waiting to hear back from a couple programs. My PI told me if he would call on my behalf (I didn't ask him, I just informed him that I'm still waiting to hear back and he volunteered to call). Is that considered acceptable? I don't know what the etiquette is for MPH programs. Will it even make a difference, especially at this point? Thanks guys.

I can't decide between Boston or Wash U!! Finances are playing a big factor in my decision, but I don't know if paying more at Boston is worth it. Boston is my top choice and Wash U is my second choice, but I wish I could visit and get a feel of the program/department.

This gives me so much hope! When did you apply?

"It has been a bit crazy in the admissions office this year; but your decision should be available within the next week or so.

Has anyone else applied to the online program at UCB for this summer??

Did you apply to University of Southern California or Univ. of South Carolina?

Does it matter if your SOPHAS essay is not 1200 words or close to 1200? I wrote an amazing SOP for another program that does not use SOPHAS and it's only 500 words. Would anyone be willing to read it over and share your thoughts, and on how I might be able to make it longer for the last two programs I'm applying to through SOPHAS?

To be honest I think it would count against you but you should ask the admission counselor or someone in that office. You should look or ask what/how much info they are asking about because it might more than you can include in 500 words. With max of 1200 though they might want more general info that you can include in a 500wrd essay! Hope this helps

Depends on the school, I know some schools require 500 words (that use SOPHAS) because they want you to be succinct. However, some schools say 1000-1500.
