MPH Fall 2014: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
For people waiting for UCB I got an email from admissions specialist saying we should hear by the end of this week or early next week.

I have a very urgent case, Please consult me if anyone knows that Can I change from MPH/Epidemiology program in 1 years at Johns Hopkins into 2 year MS program in Epi ? Who should I contact to ask for swift the fastest. Looking forward for your advices. Many thanks!

Does anyone know Tulane's or GW's word requirement? I did not see any guidelines on their websites.
I gave Tulane a single page but can't remember the word count. Actually, they don't have word limit that I know. I'm accepted into their Summer MPH Epidemiology.

Hi all!

What do you guys think about the MPH in Saint Louis University? Does anyone know the programs?

I couldn't find the track I want to apply (Global Health) as an accredited program in the Council on Education of Public Health.
How important is this accreditation?

Thanks again for your help!

Update: Accepted at UC Denver for the Health Systems, Management, & Policy!
I don't know how I'm going to choose now! wahhhhh!
Anyone else learning towards Colorado?

I've deciding between UofA (where I go now) and UC Denver! Maybe we will end up at the same place 🙂

No :/ I apart of me wants to but idk if I just bother them :/ and haha! Me too i'm very impatient Idk what to do :/ I know they said by April 15th but I feel like someone should have at least gotten off the waitlist by now. We should both call and e-mail? It'll show interest that we really want to attend the school.

I emailed them this morning just asking about my status haha kept the email short. They'll probably reply saying I have to wait til April 15 though 🙁(

Awesome! Which programs!? I seriously have no idea HOW I am going to choose! What're you leaning towards?

Has anyone heard from Yale about financial aid? I received an email today with instructions on how to apply if I hadn't, but I have already submitted everything and haven't heard back...

Same thing for me - I think that email is sent to everyone. I sent in everything early February and got a confirmation from Andre that they had received everything.

Did you have to ask for confirmation?

At Arizona, I was accepted into the child & maternal health global track and for UC Denver the community and behavioral health/global health track! I've done my undergrad at UA so I'd be happy to answer any questions you have about the school! I also just went up to Denver this week to look at the school so if you haven't been to visit the campus I can give you my personal opinion on their campus too. It's going to be a hard choice for sure! 🙂 I don't know how to send you a message on this thing, but what's your email address?

Let me know what you and Tay decide! I am committing to UC Denver for next year and am extremely excited for the new year. I'm happy to talk more in a PM or email to either or both of you.

Has anyone heard back from the London School of Hygiene and Tropic Medicine yet? I submitted my application on the day it opened and I've been at "Admissions Decision Review" for over two weeks now...

Looking for advice: currently deciding between Columbia MPH (epidemiology + sexual/reproductive health) and U of Washington MPH (epidemiology + maternal/child health).. I am from New York and love it, but also think Seattle is a great city. I was ready to totally cross Columbia off my list of options because of finances, but then they surprised me with some money that now makes the two comparable ($19,250/year at Columbia, $17,250/year at UW- got a MCHB training grant that gives me in-state tuition). UW also offered a living stipend distributed each month. I only want to take out loans for tuition, not for books or living expenses, so it would be slightly easier financially to attend UW because the cost of living is cheaper, they would be giving me the stipend to cover rent each month... Maybe this sounds pretentious, but is the extra cost to attend Columbia "worth it" in terms of reputation in the public health world? I know Seattle has tons of great public health organizations, so will my chances for a good job in the future be the same if I attended either school? Do we think school reputation matters at this point?
Any insight is welcome!!!

Hey UMich admits- there is hope for better financial aid packages! Found out a very important tidbit from Admit Day yesterday, if you already received a fin aid notice on the website, that amount may not be the final number. Scholarships will still be distributed in the next few weeks (I guess as students decline acceptances and such) so maybe I won't need to take out 33K in loans??? :heckyeah:

Would you mind sharing how U Mich's Admit Day was? I can also PM you but I wasn't able to go and would love to hear about it!!! I'm still torn between Emory and Mich

What date did you submit?

I submitted Feb 11 and have been at Course Director review for the last week and a half. Technically the six-eight week window that they told us we should hear from them starts on Tuesday for me. I wish I hadn't applied so late, I want to know!! Good luck 🙂

Rejection from Berkeley 😢

Off to Columbia I go! :hello:

Anyone know about any scholarships out there to apply for?

Also, for those who will be going to Columbia, what are your housing plans?

Anyone still waiting to hear back from Florida schools? UM, FIU, USF, NOVA, UNF, etc.

Got word from UM about 3 weeks after I submitted my application. That's the timeline they give most of the applicants, or so I've been told by the admissions director.

Best of luck!!

Thank you! When you say you heard back three weeks after you submitted, do you mean three weeks after your application was mailed by SOPHAS?

This is great news! UMich is my top choice (currently deciding between UMich, Mailman, and Bloomberg) and the prospect of not being $50K in debt is music to my ears 🙂

No problem! Yes, about three weeks after they received it. You can email the person who emailed you telling you that they received your application and he or she will give you an approximation on when you can expect your decision 🙂 that's what I did.

I submitted my application some time in early December (I forget the exact date, but it was the day that the application portal opened). They sent out an email on March 12th saying that they would be prioritizing applications by submission date, but I still haven't received my decision yet. This is so frustrating!

Thanks! I am so anxious! UM is my number 1 school. Did you already decline their offer? Maybe you could open up a spot for me 🙂

Yes! I will be declining all other offers today, so I hope it goes to you! lol. I think you will be fine, your experiences are quite impressive 🙂 I looked at your stats and mailing dates. Since SOPHAS mailed your app early March, you should be hearing soon! Best of luck!!

Thank you so much! And congrats on your acceptances!

Does it matter if your SOPHAS essay is not 1200 words or close to 1200? I wrote an amazing SOP for another program that does not use SOPHAS and it's only 500 words. Would anyone be willing to read it over and share your thoughts, and on how I might be able to make it longer for the last two programs I'm applying to through SOPHAS?

Kinda late so not sure if this is helpful- My personal statement through SOPHAS was 1533 words counted in Microsoft Word. The SOPHAS limit is a character limit, which makes the conversion to a word limit kinda weird.

Clearly mine was pretty long, but it was long because my journey to my chosen discipline was in fact a long one. I distilled this version to 500 words for UNC. I was accepted to all my programs and received compliments on my SOP from multiple program directors (you can conjecture on how much my SOP played a role in my application- I could only give an educated guess).

I don't think programs are looking for a long statement, just one that reflects who you are and can convince them that you would be an asset to their program. I actually think you could write an incredibly eloquent and convincing SOP in 500 words. It depends more on if you think you succeeded or failed to communicate your goal as effectively and thoroughly as you should.

Wow, that's such a long time!!

What course did you apply for? I've applied for MSc Control of Infectious Diseases. It sounds really intense, but London for a year actually works out cheaper than either Emory or JHU so if I get in I'm almost definitely going to go. You?

That's the program I applied to as well. Right now I'm pretty set on going to UCLA (west coaster at heart here), but if I get in to London I'm definitely going to have to think about things.

Fair enough, I'm Australian so it's a pretty big move either way. Good luck, and if you don't mind, please let me know when you find out! My fingers are crossed for both of us!
