MPH Fall 2014: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Has anyone heard back from Icahn yet? I know others have received acceptances from Dartmouth and GW, but I am still waiting to hear from them as well - do they first contact you by email or snail mail about their decision?

Hey! I think you'd like to hear this (and goes to show our persistence is worthwhile).. I called Icahn this morning since they're known for their quick turnaround and it's been a bit over a month for me and they were vocally surprised I hadn't heard back yet. The woman (Christine Cortalano) told me she would look into it right away. A few hours later I got my acceptance!! 🙂

YAY congratulations! SOPHAS says my application was mailed 1/3 so I'm hoping I'll hear soon. Did you get an e-mail that your application was complete after you had submitted it?

When did you hear from Brown that you were accepted? Also, did you attend their Admitted students day?

From UMich:

"Congratulations! On behalf of the Admissions Committee, I am pleased to inform you that we have recommended you for admission to our MPH Program in General Epidemiology. The School's Office of Academic Affairs will be sending an email message once the official admission decision has been made. Highlighted below is some important information, so please read it carefully."

Has anybody else received this/know what it means?

If I have not received an interview request from Columbia is this a bad sign? Do you think they interviewed all accepted students? Thanks!

From what my interviewer told me, only the HPM department was doing interviews.

It's just a formality - you are in. Congratulations on your acceptance.

If you're sure about that, then thank you! Haha, just don't want to get my hopes up. Do you know how soon after this email is sent that the official acceptance is usually sent out?

I got mine about a week after. I understand how you feel; I was the same way, not wanting to get excited until it became official. Congrats!

Just got acceptance from UIC. Well, recommended for admission, but I'm assuming they do what UMich does as far as the recommendation prior to the official acceptance?

Congrats!! Did you see this on the Umich site or did they email you? I got the same thing for HMP and like others have said, its probably a formality.

My interview was so short too! I hope that isn't a bad sign. I had a lot of questions for the interviewer but I got very quick answers...I hope they don't put too much weight on the interviews.

My interviewer told me they wanted them to be about 20 minutes. Mine went for 35 minutes but we chatted about random things for a little bit.

For those who applied to Epidemiology for UCLA, I received a letter for admission this afternoon (e-mail) 🙂

Congrats! When did you submit your SOPHAS application/when was it mailed to the school? I applied to the Epidemiology Dept as well, and have not heard anything.

Thanks! SOPHAS mailed all my applications 10/30/2013. Best wishes to you!

Has anyone heard from JHU MPH Epidemiology? I am so anxious to hear back!

Apparently prospective masters candidates in epidemiology hear back in March, whereas doctoral candidates hear back in February. I have been waiting since October, however I applied to the MHS program in epidemiology.

Thanks for the info. I guess the wait continues... Good luck!

UW health services is releasing admissions...in for MPH - health systems and policy

I just got wait listed at Yale's program today... Oh well. I guess you never know what will happen~

Real excited to be accepted into UW today; but I have noticed that some have already heard back from UMich. I suppose it is a moot point now, but was curious if anyone had any insight as to how applying after the priority deadline (1/15) would affect an application for UMich?

Waiting on UCLA, my first choice at this point, when did you hear back? I contacted the student affairs officer and she said that an admissions decision had been submitted for me and I should be hearing from the university soon. That was last week. The application status on the status page still says that a decision is pending. UCI is a fairly new program from what I understand. I took an epi class there this summer. It was taught by an actual, working epidemiologist! The program is only 5 quarters, so that is attractive from a financial point of view. There doesn't seem to be many classes to choose from and there is no Industrial Hygiene option For what I'm looking to get out of my MPH, I feel that SDSU is a better fit. Haven't heard back from them either.

Here is what they wrote on their twitter: "If your application is still in processing, 1-2 weeks late won't be a problem. Any longer and you should check with the dept."

Did you submit your SOPHAS after the deadline or was your application mailed after the deadline? I heard that they continue to admit/look at applications until the amount of seats fill up. One of my friends was accepted in early March of last year so I do not think that the admissions cycle is not over by any means, but this varies by department. I could be wrong though. Good Luck!

I heard back from UCLA on 2/14..heartbreaking news. But I definitely have high hopes for you!! I also heard back from SDSU and Tex AM the same day. I submitted 11/30.
The application system for UCLA still isn't updated. They send you a link via email to access the decision.
I contacted UCB today and they said they haven't finished reviewing and because of an emergency situation regarding the admissions chair for the EHS dept, so my app hasn't been reviewed yet. She said that I will know, hopefully, in a few weeks. =\

I am also looking into Industrial Hygiene. Are you looking into becoming a REHS?

Hey! You heard back from SDSU already? I applied to their epi department though, but just want to see if they're sending out decisions.

I thought I wasn't going to hear back until March at least. And my online portal still isn't updated. They notified my acceptance through the mail. The letter was dated on the 7th...they are rolling out!! They said it wasn't official yet until I reply.

Awesome, congrats!!! I hope I hear back soon too because the wait is so painful.

Finally heard back from my top choice University of Washington (UW) and got the dreaded "waitlisted" 😕 I seriously don't know how I feel right now....of course I'm thankful I did not get outright rejected.....but I've never been waitlisted before....does anyone have any insight on the waitlist process at UW?

Should I stay positive or should I just see this as a "delayed rejection"?

Undergrad School: University of California Irvine

Applied:UC Berkeley (HSB) 11/25 to SOPHAS, U of Washington (HS) 1/1, Yale (SBS) 1/9 to SOPHAS, U of Michigan (HBHE) 1/15 to SOPHAS
Accepted: UMichigan 1/30
Rejected: Yale 2/6
Waitlisted: UW 2/19

Just got acceptance from UIC. Well, recommended for admission, but I'm assuming they do what UMich does as far as the recommendation prior to the official acceptance?

Thanks for the reply! I submitted SOPHAS after the deadline.. I spaced and submitted a day late (1/16). Oh well, I can only keep my fingers crossed as this point. Good luck to you too!

I would email them a short paragraph about why UW is your first choice and ask if there is any further information you can send them. Alternatively, you could call them as well. It may bump you to the top of the waitlist...at the very least, it couldn't hurt!

Congrats. You will love the city. And really great career services and opportunities in the listserv. It will be my alma mater after this semester! If you want to know more message me if you have any questions.

Is everyone who has heard back from UW in the first half of the alphabet?
I haven't heard a peep from UW HS, so I'm wondering if I've been rejected 🙁

Yess, my last name starts with an "H" and I was accepted yesterday to the Health Services- Social and Behavioral Sciences program. But I am also still waiting to hear back from other programs that others have gotten responses from, so I feel your pain! I just try to remind myself that people are submitting the applications at different times and even though I haven't gotten an acceptance, I also haven't gotten a rejection yet. Good luck!

My last name starts with a T and I was accepted yesterday. However, I did submit my app pretty early, 11/25

so there is hope! I'm all the way in the back of the alphabet and I submitted my app well over 2 weeks before deadline but I agree about trying to stay optimistic (not hearing anything at this point is recieving a rejection sooner)
Glad to know that there are others who are pulling their hair out waiting. I think we're also in the same boat waiting from UMich HBHE. Good luck to you!

Thanks! I have quite a bit of family in Chicago, and it's not ridiculously far from where I'm at now (about 3.5-4 hours) so it might end up being a good choice. Of course everything for me will come down to where gives me funding 😉 But regardless, I might have to hit you up for some info once I get closer to decision making!

Ugh my Columbia interview was only like 15ish minutes... She only asked me like 3 questions and I asked her 2... she spoke quickly though

Same here... I'm wondering if we had the same person. It was professional and to the point, but blazing fast. Hopefully not a bad a thing?

Hahah we probably did! It was definitely professional/straight forward, but just absurdly quick

Any Columbia applicants able to shine some light on the tuition? Specifically the Columbia MPH (Comparative Effectiveness Outcomes Research, Health Management, or Health Policy Analysis certificate)... The website shows $23,490* but states its only for Fall 2014? Hopefully it won't be (2 * $23,490) for the entire year... It also looks like these certificates are completed in 3 semesters versus 4 from previous years.
I think that's per semester. Doubt it's per year...unfortunately.
