MPH Fall 2014: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I attended the interview day 2 weeks ago. I really enjoyed it. There were at least a dozen MPH and MHSA students thought the day to answer questions and talk about the school. Everyone was extreme nice and engaging. It was a great atmosphere. I honestly wasn't seriously considering Michigan before the interview but the visit day had me considering leaving my deposit.

There was a faculty interview as well. It was a good opportunity for me to address any flaws in my application. I don't believe I would have gotten in without attending the interview day.

I received my acceptance about a week after the interview day.

Thanks for the feedback and congrats!

I also turned in my app in December to Michigan HBHE and have yet to hear anything...I'm debating whether I should contact the school. Did you email them?

I E-mailed Laura Miller, the Admissions Coordinator and she got back to me quickly. Here's what the E-mail said:
Thank you for your email and your patience! You should be hearing your decision this week. It looks like the department has yours ready for a decision soon, so it should be by the end of this week. Thank you!
Here's crossing fingers for good news

Hi @InsaneObserver ,

Sorry to hear about your rejection from Emory. Looking at your other posts, it looks like you got into some other great programs already. When was your application sent on to the EHS department? I applied to a different department, Global Health, and my application was forwarded on to the Global Health department on 02/13. From my understanding, decisions are made a bit quicker now, and not the 3-6 weeks that it says in the initial email.

So far, I've been denied by Johns Hopkins and UNC-Chapel Hill. I'm sitting, hoping, and waiting for some good news... though my optimism is slowly fading. It might be time to start applying to other non-Top 5 programs.

I got the Emory confirmation back on 1/9. I emailed them last week but never got a reply and just kept checking the OPUS site. It sounds like people are hearing alot sooner than those in the EHS conc though...although there are not that many EH/EHS active users on here. I applied to a multitude of schools, it doesn't hurt. And seriously, the extra cost to apply to another school is a drop in the bucket compared to tuition. I am surprised where I got accepted to though. Thanks.

It's so nice to see how useful this forum has become applicants! Glad I started it 🙂 Happy to see everyone is getting acceptances all around and how supportive you all are! I love it! Best of luck to everyone still waiting on admission decisions, and congrats to all of those done with the application process! The wait is almost over!

Waiting on: USC, SDSU, UCDenver, and Arizona!
Accepted: Tulane, Claremont Graduate School
Rejected: UCLA (sigh, but expected), U Texas
Congrats on Tulane & Claremont!! When did you hear from Arizona? And from Arizona you mean University of Arizona right? I only want to clarify because Arizona State now has a public health program through U Minnesota (I think).

Accepted: n/a
Rejected: n/a
Waitlisted: n/a

What programs are you applying to for those schools?

I heard back from UCLA on 2/14..heartbreaking news. But I definitely have high hopes for you!! I also heard back from SDSU and Tex AM the same day. I submitted 11/30.
The application system for UCLA still isn't updated. They send you a link via email to access the decision.
I contacted UCB today and they said they haven't finished reviewing and because of an emergency situation regarding the admissions chair for the EHS dept, so my app hasn't been reviewed yet. She said that I will know, hopefully, in a few weeks. =\

I am also looking into Industrial Hygiene. Are you looking into becoming a REHS?
Just heard from UCLA, I'm in! Thanks for the well-wishes. I also heard from UCI yesterday and SDSU last week.

What programs are you applying to for those schools?
Not to worry! & thanks!
I applied to the following programs:
Health Promotion: at UCLA and SDSU
Maternal/Child/Family Health: at Arizona, Colorado, USC, and Tulane
Management/Leadership/Policy: at UTexas and Claremont

I was kinda all over the place! haaha

Big ups, ajoys, big ups.

Did they include any funding info?
Not yet. Crossing my fingers and toes and eyes and everything that I will hear something eventually? But of course remaining realistic that I may not 😉

I got the same email. I was hopeful...for a minute.

I emailed financial aid. They said:

"Public Health students should begin to receive their award notifications beginning the week of March 10th. Once you are awarded you will receive an email and you will be able to view and accept your award via OPUS."

Hope that helps!

Hey guys, for Columbia financial aid… I was going crazy thinking that we'd be paying $35,000 per semester… but that's not the case, right?

Above the chart, it says: "The tuition fee for the MPH programs listed below covers the fall and spring semesters."

So am I right for thinking that that fee covers the year (both fall & spring together)?

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! :nailbiting:

it's for both semesters (i.e. per year) 🙂 ; unless you're in the MPH - global health certificate track in which case it's 40-smthg K per year

Oh my goodness… Thank you!! I was going out of my head thinking about how out of the world it would be to pay $140K for an MPH! :hungover:.. silly me.

Thank you for your speedy response…and the good--probably obvious to everyone but me--news! 🙂

Well, if you factor in cost of living, book expenses, and all of the other additional fees that they have broken down (computer fee, student health fee, activity fee, etc.) the MPH will realistically still cost you about +/- $120K (a little over $61K/year) depending how you much you end up spending on personal expenses..

I was also accepted to Columbia's MPH program, but I need to figure out how I am going to pay for all of this if I end up going there.

Hi, I got a $30,000 scholarship from Columbia (couldn't believe it!), and was notified via email a few hours after the Financial Aid survey (i.e. I hadn't filled it out yet) came in last Thursday night US time. Hope that helps!
wow that is awesome, congrats!!

Hello! Has any one heard from Berkeley yet? I know there were some earlier waves of notifications that went out but lately nothing. I did some snooping online and found out they have their Admitted Students Day coming up on March 17th!! That's so soon!! They also want students to get "tickets" online before March 10. So hope that means the rest of us will hear back within the next two weeks..... :xf:

I'm still waiting for Berkeley's response as well (Epidemiology/Biostatistics, SOPHAS mailed 10/30). Thanks for the additional information! Anxious times... :xf:

I applied to the same program. Let's hope we'll hear back this week (or today if possible)! They need to give us time to arrange for the admitted day, so I think this week should be the time.

I'm hoping they let us know soon. My friend who applied to Berkeley's epi program last year got her acceptance letter a few days AFTER the admit day. They told her that they just had so many applications to review.

Yale has been really quite lately. I don't want to jinx myself but i haven't seen very much about them here in terms of acceptance/rejection in a while

Not sure! I'm leaning towards SDSU, because I'm from Southern California and in-state/public school tuition would be reaaaaallly nice. Not to mention San Diego is just a beautiful area in general. So I'm really, really hoping I get accepted there. Otherwise, next up would probabaly be Arizona, Claremont, Colorado.. so many decisions. hahah

What about you!?

I did the exact same thing applying allll over the place. It makes the decision so much harder! How are you going to choose? I have no idea how I'm going to pick between schools AND programs.

haha Nice, a fellow indecisive person! :highfive:
I honestly have no idea. I'm sure it will come down to what's the most realistic (price/program/location wise)! It's certainly going to be tough.
Do you have any ideas of your top picks?

I feel you. When I visited them I was told I should hear back in 2-3 weeks; this is the fourth week since then. I'm debating calling in soon. This wait has gotta be almost over....

Yeah, I applied in early November so I am pulling my hair out. Also waiting on Columbia and the University of Michigan.

Wow thats pretty great! I hope you hear back with some good news!!! I got waitlisted at BU which was my #1 so hears hoping AZ takes me. SDSU was another far stretch so I'm waiting on them as well.

I hope this won't happen to us. The wait is very frustrating and it is getting on my nerves. I understand that they must have received a large volume of applications, but they also have one of the earliest deadlines! Fingers crossed to hear from them (and Yale) soon.

My status on Wolverine Access was updated a few days ago to "recommended for admission"!!! Now just waiting on the official acceptance. Hope you hear back soon!!

As far as the UW/UM debate...
I went to UW for undergrad and graduated from the School of Nursing a couple years ago. The nursing school and school of public health are in the same building (more like dungeon...no windows, never-ending hallways) and have quite a bit of overlap with professors, classes, clinical sites, etc. The professors at the UW School of Public Health are AMAZING and are doing incredible research, and there are a ton of opportunities to get involved with the hospitals/organizations in the area as well as the impressive public health efforts going on in Seattle right now. However, in my experience, UW is pretty lacking in providing any assistance with finding a job post-graduation and it does not have a very active alumni network. So you are pretty much on your own, relying on the connections you made during any jobs or internships you had during school, meaning that you will most likely be a bit stuck in the Seattle area. Also, it sounds like there's not much of a social community within the school.

In contrast, U of M has an excellent alumni network, career center, connections to jobs/internships on the east coast and abroad, and social community within the school, which are all things that I'm looking for.

If anyone has any opinions about deciding between UM/Berkeley/GWU, I'd love to hear! I applied (and accepted!!) to the Maternal Child Health concentrations at Berkeley and GWU, and Health Behavior Health Education at U of M.

Hey I did not get that email!! Feeling neglected lol! Congrats on the acceptance. What program?

Is anyone else between Emory and Hopkins? I guess Colorado is in the mix too, granted they give me a fellowship, but I'm not counting on it!

YAY!!!! My first rejection. 😛 Officially rejected from Yale (not that I was planning on going there anyway). I guess Harvard will follow suit. At this point my only hope is Columbia.

P.S: To people who say that the GRE doesn't matter...you are clearly wrong. 🙂

I'm hoping that when I visit the schools, I'll set foot on one of the campuses and angels will sing or something...

Right now I'm torn between Global Health-Community and Behavioral Health at Denver and Epidemiology at Minnesota--I'm really excited about a lot of the opportunities at both. I know I want research to be a component of my career--I just have to figure out whether it's going to be my whole career 🙂

SO MUCH INDECISION

Good luck, man. It's not over til it's over... your experience makes you a qualified candidate.

I'm pretty sure Yale will send you one 😉
My program is "Advanced Professional MPH Program in Applied Biostatistics & Epidemiology". Hope it's OK not to join their Facebook group since I don't have a Facebook account.
