MPH Fall 2015: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Nope! It was on Opus. When I clicked the view decision link, there was an additional link to open a PDF for the decision letter. I knew it was a rejection letter since I was missing the 'pay deposit' link that a lot of folks tend to get (I've noticed it in the '14 thread too).

My feelings were a bit hurt because I was rejected, but I'll admit that I did not necessarily want to go there so it was for the best. Now I'm super nervous to hear back from my top picks! :cyclops:
Bummer, sorry to hear it. :-/

It's good you're staying positive! I think some rejections aren't necessarily a bad thing; helps to narrow down the options. 🙂

Congrats everyone on your acceptances! Sorry to hear about the rejection @oceanhue, but it's a little comforting that it was from a school that wasn't your top choice. Hopefully your top choices give you the green light! 🙂 I like the optimism.

ahhh gotta love that IKEA. have u had any contact with them? Its not a popular school for public health so I have absolutely no idea when they send out their decisions. I know the deadline is approaching so I guess I'll call in the weeks following to ask a rough estimate. but the wait is killing me !! and cant u take the green line in to college park, or is that the commute u were talking about that you hated lol

Hahaha, yes. That green line. Today they had that cracked rail problem up at PG Plaza - all the outer stations with their outdoors-ness seem to be single tracking or straight up broken. If I had to go there today, I would be smacking my head against the wall :bang:- between that and the orange/silver cracked line problem (affecting my work commute) metro + cold = bad times. In general, though, it's on the longer side of metro commutes I would be making, whether from work or home.

I have no idea either about their timeline...you'll definitely have to let me know if you hear something!

I live on the west coast. Should I wait for other schools closer to home or is it silly to wait to accept JHU?

It depends... Is JHU your #1 no matter what, or are there conditions where you may decide to go to another school (e.g., a school closer to home offers you a scholarship)? They aren't allowed to give up your spot until you miss their deadline, so there is no rush, though I understand wanting to just click accept as well!!

Ahh, never thought of doing this. When I lived in DC I think I did try to contact my alumnae, I'm not sure what happened afterwards, LOL. I think most of them are still in California. I'll have to see if I can set something up. I wouldn't mind renting a room in VA and commuting to DC. You'll always find the most interesting characters on the train. Occasionally, I thought I was hallucinating because I believe I saw a man selling oils? Very strange.

I would love to be back in DC again! Working for the government is my number one goal, and so far that seems like the best option school wise (compared to the other schools I applied to).

Yes!! That guy!! Well, I guess several guys have the vests? sashes? with the oils. Personally haven't had too many strange encounters on the metro, but have had quite a few on buses. 🙄 Anyways, yes - I have the same goals too, so it does really seem like staying here is the best idea!

What kind of factors are you looking at? CoA? Location? Program specifics? I would take all of those into account (and more) before you consider making a decision. If you have thought about it and JHU is the school you wish to be at, then go ahead and accept. I wouldn't just accept simply because it is JHU. There is no consequence in waiting as long as you make your decision before their deadline.

Congratulations to everyone on their acceptances!! 🙂 Just heard back from Yale this morning and I was accepted into the MPH Epidemiology Microbial Diseases program!

Congratulations!!! Wow, nervous knowing they're now truly beginning handing out decisions...

I want to be close to my family. I'm not worried about the scholarships. But if I'm going to have to relocate, I might as well relocate for the best program, you know? Is it worth relocating for JHU or is UW and Berkeley just as good? That's what I'm wondering.

Has anybody received their BU admissions packet yet? I know they said we would be receiving it early January, so I assume that should be soon.

Conducted interviews with 2-3 faculty from every program applied to- May seem like overkill but I wanted to make sure my personal statements align as closely as possible with the programs I was applying to 🙂 Faculty have SO much insight into what types of applicants are best suited for their programs. I highly recommend doing this!

University of Washington Interview: Prospective Student Interview- Interview with a faculty member whom you have built a relationship with and they will submit a rating of how well they believe you will do in the program. This is attached to your application and is taken under review while being you are consider for admission. Not many people know to do this, so look into it!! 🙂

Rejected from Yale today...which I thought I'd be more bummed about, but really it's going to make it easier to decide where to go. Just waiting on a couple more! Including Emory.....
When did you apply? You have a lot of other places to choose from!

When did you apply? I'm just curious for my own reasons.

Johns Hopkins is ranked #1 and UWash and Berkeley at 6 and 8 respectively:
http://grad-schools.usnews.rankings...ols/top-health-schools/public-health-rankings

However, you want to consider if you're going for any specialization, and which school has professors working in that area, concentration opportunities, and/or coursework specific to that. Also, it helps to go to school where you want to work, because that's likely where you'll be doing your practicum. But it's not like you're going to have very much trouble finding a job anywhere after going to Johns Hopkins.

I haven't gotten mine yet either. I am thinking we should see it in the mail in the next week or so.

You have an impressive application! I noticed that you received a merit scholarship from BU. Did you receive that with the original acceptance e-mail? Or did it come later?

Did anyone else just get an e-mail from HSPH about the Payne Fellowship? I saw an e-mail from them and freaked out, then saw it was about applying to this fellowship and was probably sent to everyone.

Does anyone know if the Harvard or Boston programs have a rolling admission? Or do all schools stick to a firm deadline? I tried searching elsewhere in the forum and came up blank. Thanks for any insight!
The only school that I know of that has rolling admissions is Tulane. I am pretty sure Boston and Harvard follow a standard admissions schedule.

May I ask what department you applied to at yale? I'm sending you positive vibes for Emory!

I received that e-mail as well. At least it means that something is going on over there! They haven't really said anything much up to this point.

I applied in dec 1st week. I'm a foreign national. So I'm worried about making myself good enough to get sponsored for a work visa after I graduate. Thanks KPZ.

All three of those are excellent schools with great reputations, so you really shouldn't have too much of a problem finding a job afterwards. I'd suggest looking at where students from those programs do their practicums, as it will help you to get an idea of what sorts of opportunities will be available to you. Additionally, look at the research focuses of the professors. If you have a specific focus, that could be very important.

Just found out I was rejected from Yale for the EMD department, honestly it did come as a surprise but it was the only school that I couldn't get a handle on their average GPA's or GRE's from last year or from their website. It wasn't my top choice but still sad to get my first rejection 🙁 Oh well, at least I can rest easy knowing their decision already lol

Sorry to hear that!! May I ask when you applied?

Sorry to hear that 🙁 On to more acceptances for you, now!

I totally agree with you that I hate how they don't have some sort of "average admitted student" profile. I understand emphasizing they evaluate holistically, but I don't want to feel like I'm wasting my time (and "sunny" outlook on life) applying if there is a very low chance of acceptance, ya know?

EDIT: Oh, and they've been teases since I was a junior in high school! I don't think my PSAT scores of 1940 or whatever warrant a tiny postcard from you, Yale, encouraging me to apply. Even my real SAT scores probably wouldn't have warranted such a thing.

Also, as I mentioned previously, I rent from an older alumna of my college...well, I didn't mention this, but she went to Yale School of Public Health. Hopefully her presence (since she lives in the same house - it's her house) will give me good luck...

I was rejected from Yale as well 🙁. Oh well, here is to hoping for some other acceptances!

Congratulations to everyone on their acceptances!! 🙂 Just heard back from Yale this morning and I was accepted into the MPH Epidemiology Microbial Diseases

congrats! If you don't mind me asking, when did you send your app in?

Nope. I was verified on 12/11. Did you hear back?

Yeah, I got in about a week after I was verified in early December. An email I got from them said their usual turn around time is 3-6 weeks but I'm sure you'll hear back before then.

Wow that's great you heard back so quickly! Today is actually the 4 week mark, so I'm stressing clearly haha
