MPH Fall 2015: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
It depends on what school it is as to whether or not that's in a particularly long time frame, but I'd say just hold off until at least March. It's killing me waiting on Harvard because I really want to start narrowing down my options but there's not much to do but wait right now. There's probably tons of people calling about statuses and that's not going to make them go any faster. Unless they gave you a date you would hear by and that was over a week ago, I'd say hold off.

It's with GW. When I applied it said 8-10 weeks and it's now been 10. Every time I call they say "you'll hear within a couple days" but it's now been a couple weeks...

I'm waiting on GW too. I guess this is good to know.

For JHU- What is this online portal of which you speak? I haven't gotten any login info or any comms whatsoever since December.

Some people were saying earlier that they were/are swamped with a large number of applicants so that explains any delay. I got in around my 10th week if I remember correctly but I was expecting to wait a little longer.

How long did anyone wait for their username/password information from Tufts to find out their admission decision?

Are you waiting for the public health management?

Do you know if they have an interview portion for any of the programs?

I actually called them and they told me I was accepted over the phone - I applied for HPM. I do not believe there is an interview process!

I have become weak... I think I'm going to email UNC today. 😵 According to grad cafe a few people heard today from other departments, but I don't know what the EPI department's deal is.

do you think they make a note every time we call? i don't want them to realize that i've been calling every other week...! feeling like such a stalker.

If you applied for anything besides the MPH, I think it was done through a portal which is where they notify you. If you applied through SOPHAS you get an e-mail.

I emailed Valerie Hudock, the student services manager, and she promptly emailed me back. She was very nice. I would not worry about shooting her an email!

Rejected from Yale...but not surprised (or even disappointed).

I logged in to the hopkins portal this morning and saw a link for my decision status - accepted into the International Health department's MSPH program!!

hope decisions will be coming out soon for everyone else too 🙂

Thanks for the tip! This "unofficial" acceptance is somewhat anxiety-inducing, however. I don't know whether to rejoice or keep a lid on it...

For those waiting on decisions from UNC Nutrition - I worked up the courage to email the student services manager (Joanne) asking about the decision timeline - she said she was processing admissions decisions to the graduate school this week! When the official decisions come through depends on how much backlog the grad school has but at least we know they are on their way. Now time to worry about the fact that I didn't receive an unofficial email from the department 🙁
Good luck to everyone!

Just received notification from Emory that I've been waitlisted for an MPH in Epidemiology. I think I'd rather just have a definitive decision, but it's nice to know I wasn't simply denied.

Anyone waiting to hear from U Maryland and/or U Florida... I emailed Maryland today to ask about my app and they said they're reviewing it tomorrow and I should receive an answer "via postal mail within the week." Got an acceptance via email to Florida today. SOPHAS verified on 1/29.

I applied 1/6, having already been verified by SOPHAS and I'm STILL waiting. Someone in this thread, perhaps on a page in the later 40s, said the last meeting was last week by the ad com. A week ago today I e-mailed admissions asking for a general update. Their response hinted at the same thing, saying a decision would be available in the next week. So, I assume rejection by Friday considering others were accepted Wednesday. HAPPY DAY.

Is it ok to email Columbia???? :scared: ... Not even sure who I would email... I don't want to rush a decision but I would love to be able to sleep at night and to stop checking my email and have my heart drop every time an email pulls in...

I'm assuming only international students have heard back recently from this weeks interview (which makes sense, they need to know before domestic students)... but I'm not sure if I should email them... I only emailed financial aid to make sure that all my FAFSA etc paperwork was in on time...

Congratulations and good luck! I was, like, postal mail?? Then I realized maybe it's because you're applying for the other campus. All my communication from them was via email. On the flip side, I'm completely dumb. I had put MPH-CP as the designation for UMD in my signature because I thought it stood for something like community and population and it was referred to such on one of their pages. I JUST realized CP = College Park AGHH my brain cells

Yes haha I applied to Community & Population Health which is on the Baltimore campus. I wish they'd just email me but oh well!

Oh an unrelated note, is anyone else waiting to hear from Tulane? I got an email saying they were reviewing my app on 1/29 so I'm hoping to hear soon...

Columbia's financial aid office replied to me and said that we will know if we receive a merit based scholarship before admitted students day!

Did Columbia have an institution financial aid form? I didn't submit anything to them besides the FAFSA.

I received an email as well today, if you have not yet been admitted and you're a US citizen applicant all you should have is your FAFSA filled out no later than Feb 15th to be considered for a merit based scholarship...

If you are accepted I would contact the financial aid office, I think there's another form to fill out with a CUID#.

And tuition is going to increase by 1% to 3% (We will know by April)

That 1% looks alot better than that 3%.

Okay so I got an email from Harvard today that seemed super generic and thanked me for my interest. I responded asking if it had anything to do with the application process and they said no. They also said "You should be hearing about your application to the SM2 program by the middle of March." so I have no idea if this applies to MPH applicants but for SM2 applicants like me seems like a long wait.
Based on what I see in grad cafe it seems like they roll out decisions by degree type? So like PhD, then ScD, then mabye MPH, and then SM2??

I e-mailed the office because I was curious. If you're accepted, you are automatically considered for their merit-based scholarships. The supplemental form isn't out yet according to them, but it's more for informational purposes. We'll know more at admitted students day?

Update on UNC: I was told that the admissions committee will be done meeting at the end of this week and we should hear by the end of next week at the latest.

Is anyone going to the second accepted students day? I'm headed to Seattle next week, so I can't get to New York until the April 10th date.

To those who applied to UIC, how long did it take from when they received your SOPHAS application (and processed it) and when you received a decision? Thanks!

It looks like Harvard released a lot of ScD Epi decisions today... Mid-March sounds pretty late. I'm *hoping* ScM decisions are released in the next couple of weeks along with financial aid info.

I'm going to Columbia's admitted students day on March 6...

Eeek March 6th!! is there another day for those of us who still haven't heard back ??

congrats!
I am still waiting on Harvard and Yale.. but between columbia and jhu I am more toward jhu at this moment ;-)
What is your first choice? Harvard?

I am confused about JHU MSPH GDEC Tuition calculations.. It seems that if you're on track, 4 terms of classes ( Full-time tuition) then 2- terms of practicum (75% departmental scholarship)? If you're an international student, you have to enroll in the third term of your second year. Does that mean one additional term taking classes or an additional term completing your practicum? I need to get a better estimate of how much my degree is going to cost me..

The pdf said that you need 64 credits to graduate. I am guessing that's not counting the practicum

I am international student.. yea I am confused with their program too, so two years of regular classes and one year of practicum so total three years? ... I thought it would only be one year of regular class plus one year of intern and then we are done..
Yea harvard is my top choice but I don't think I can get in.. most likely I will end up choosing jhu. how about you?

It's 2 years - the first year has 4 terms (8 weeks per term)...so it's SUPER fast-paced. Then, your second year is the practicum and I heard 99% of students qualify for the 75% scholarship.

thats great! I am in a quarter (10 wks ) system college now and it goes really fast.. can imagine what it would be like for 8 week term.. yea thanks for the info!

JHU is my first choice. I am 95% sure I will be accepting their offer for admission. I am really excited!! Let me know if you decide to take their offer!

So after reading the academic guide more closely, I think that if you meet the bare minimum requirements of the program (and plan carefully), you can graduate in 6 terms (1.5 years). But if you are an international you are required to stay at least until the 7th term (grr.. more expenses.)

You are required to take at least 16 credits per term to be registered full-time. You take 4 terms of intensive PH classes and at the end of that year you take the written comprehensive examination. It says in the general requirements that 'A minimum of 64 credits in formal coursework must be earned over a period of at least four academic quarters.' so then you should be done with classes.

Second year you're off for your practicum. 'The practicum must be of at least two academic quarters duration' . You also have to complete your MSPH essay. You could also take online classes and other classes at JHU if you're doing your practicum locally.

so if your goal is to meet the bare minimum to graduate, its possible to do it in 6 terms.

and you won't be cramming classes since you are required by the program to take 16 credits per term anyway.

I am going to email the department just because i'm concerned about total cost of tuition..

I'm torn... I got 100% tuition Dean's scholarship to Michigan and was recently accepted to Hopkins. Would it be ridiculously stupid to give up a free MPH by attending Hopkins instead of Michigan?
I think 100% scholarship for a masters program is an incredible opportunity and in my opinion, very hard to say no to. It depends on how important I guess financing is for school and whether the programs are what you are looking for. Both schools are great! Kinda jealous of your predicament 😛 good luck!!
