Yes, I think quarter life crisis can be a thing. Your friends got married and had kids when THEY felt ready. You will get married and have kids if and when YOU feel ready. It's better to make the huge decisions in life when you're ready rather than make them when you think you're supposed to make them because everyone else is making them. I think people are happier when they do what they actually want to do. 🙂

I'll be 25. I've been with my boyfriend for more than 3 years and people around are still asking when are we going get married/have kids. Pressure's on, brah.
I attended one of UMich's prospective student visit days back in October and was very impressed by the friendliness of the faculty/staff and the enthusiasm of the students currently enrolled in their program. They not only believe in their program but in the mission of public health in general.
That said, what impressed me most were the facilities. UMich has two new, modern buildings devoted exclusively to the School of Public Health. Lots of beautiful classrooms, study areas, computers and conference rooms are available for the students to use.
If you do go for an interview, you will have to finance the trip. Given that it's UMich, I think it will be worth it. Good luck to you regardless.

I definitely have this quarter-life crisis going on. I'm only 23 and I know a bunch of people getting engaged and married. I've been with my boyfriend for almost 5 years now, and I am not thinking about marriage until we are both financially stable. He also moved to Atlanta for me, so I'm freaking out if I have to move again in less than a year for grad school. Plus I don't know where he will be going for grad school either...
I'm 26 in Kentucky/Cincinnati... All of my friends have gotten married and most are on their second kid! This is actually largely why I want to get out of here and am not applying to any local schools. I can't stand the pressure from friends and family. Seriously don't feel obligated... I'm much more comfortable doing what I want and not being locked into my relationship forever. That just gives him the leeway to give up. 🙂 I'm glad to have some solidarity here, though. I've lived with my boyfriend for 2+ years and we've been together for 3+ years. It's nerve racking to think of moving away, but why pretty much put a halt on self development now to have some kids? Your 20s don't last forever.

My boyfriend was a bit nervous when we started dating (right before turning 25) and I would talk about classmates getting engaged, haha.
Getting married and having kids is the easiest thing in the world to do. Contributing something to the world through one's knowledge or the raising of good kids is another matter.
I think a lot of people who opt for that course tend to grill people like yourself because in some ways your decision to wait makes them wonder if they should have waited or maybe abstained altogether. Rather than consider the notion that they might/should have done it differently, they'll try to make you second-guess yourself. I know a few parents who probably should have opted out on the kid thing, though few of them would ever admit it to anyone (some have to me).

Exactly! It's always easier to take the pre-determined route than go against the grain. Raising kids is fine and it is important that we raise good, responsible citizens. Still, we are overpopulated, so it need not be a top priority.
I will have just turned 23 by the time I matriculate. I think only like 3 of my friends out of my friend group in college actually went straight to grad school or professional school after undergrad, so I don't feel too pressured by my peers which is nice. Usually when I mention that I'm applying to Gillings to someone who's already gotten their public health degree or in the public health field, they just stare at me and later say something like "Oh, you're so young though" or "Don't you want a little more experience?" Plus, the average age for the MCH dept at Gillings is 28. 😵

Thanks for the encouragement. I have been to the UM SPH since I did a summer program with them in 2012. It was beautiful. I wonder if I could still do an interview for the program without going to the actual visit day? It probably won't be the same though...I just don't know if I can take off for work.

So now that most people have some acceptances behind them, does anybody know if the laptop requirement by most schools is strict on it being a traditional laptop? Or would something like a Microsoft Surface Pro 2/3 meet the requirements?

I don't really think this is the way to think about that for me. For some, maybe that's what they wanted to do to begin with, have a family and settle. No shame in that, as long as they are able to supply that support to their families.
On the other hand, I do get stigmatized from my family and friend here because I do have a long-term boyfriend who I live with in Chicago instead of living with my family in NJ. I moved because there were jobs here and I could have a small commute. Back at home, it comes off as "she's only following him, she should stay home and wait for jobs to come up...who cares if she's umemployed, she'll be independent...while dependent on us..."
Just contradictions all around, so I try not to pass judgement on those who picked a different path.
I'm sure they don't really check. However, you're going to need something on which you can run various analysis software and will be able to use to work fairly efficiently in spreadsheets and whatnot.

If I get accepted I will defer the year and matriculate fall 2016 because I just got an AmeriCorps position in Seattle, which starts in about 3 weeks! So, I will be 26!

I wasn't passing a judgment, nor have I ever questioned others' decisions on parenthood (it's none of my business). I was just submitting a theory about the pressures and questions child-bearing couples often levy on people who decide to delay or refrain from the parenthood thing. I'm at an age where most of my peers' kids are in high school or college, so I rarely hear it anymore. I'm grateful for it.

I applied to Chronic Disease Epi at Yale. Thanks for the positive vibes about Emory... Just playing the waiting game!
If UMich is one of your top choices, I would make every effort to show up for a live interview. If work precludes it, there's nothing you can do, but the mere act of being there sends a powerful message. Phone/Skype is an acceptable alternative, but only that.
You should also assume that most of the competition will show, so that's worth considering as well. Best of luck to you, and if you do make the trip, please share your experience with us.

SOPHAS was done on 11/28 I think and verified on 12/3. I got confirmation emails from all the schools pretty much right after.

Thanks so much for advice! I definitely think I will visit. They have dates from January to March (one of the dates in March is one day before Admitted Student Day). I'm thinking of going on that week (I would have to take off 3 days at work but kill two birds with one stone kind of deal?) or President's Day weekend (Feb 16 since I have a federal holiday and therefore won't have to take off days at work).
UMich has been my number 2 choice and I was already planning on choosing between UMich and Emory (though I haven't even gotten accepted yet...), but now it's even harder to choose between which UMich program I would accept if I was offered admission to HMP as well.
Edit: Since the last interview day is March 16, and admitted student day is March 13...what is their timeline to making a decision?

Hah . You'll be fine. Actually, being married right now would be a nightmare. I have absolutely no intentions in settling down until my mid-thirties.
Do what works for you. You're still young so you have plenty of time. Don't rush things.
The 3 things I would consider are:
1. Can you run the MS office suite
2. Can you download SAS on it
3. Does it have a decent amount of memory (comparable to standard laptops)
4. Are you comfortable using the keyboard and mouse that are compatible
If yes to all, it should be good. If not, I'd consider getting a laptop. And I always recommend Lenovos on top of that.

I think we're in pretty similar positions--Emory is my 1st choice, UMich my 2nd at this point. I was accepted to my 2nd choice UMich program (HBHE) in December, yesterday I was accepted to Emory HMP, and now, today, I have been invited to the UMich HMP visit day. I didn't think I'd be invited to that, I thought that since I was accepted to HBHE that HMP had passed on me, so now I am not sure what to do. UMich is my 2nd choice, so I was already planning to head up to Ann Arbor for the Admitted Student Day on the 13th, so I may just sign up for the March 12th HMP interview and see what happens.
Here's what their website states: "Within one to two weeks following the visitation, applicants are notified of their final admission status in writing (http://www.sph.umich.edu/hmp/programs/masters/admissions.html)."
However, it's worth noting that someone on the MHA thread was interviewed via Skype for UMich's MHSA degree this Monday and was notified of her acceptance the next day. She lives in India, so a trip to Ann Arbor would have been quite expensive in terms of time and money.

I think they have slowly been accepting for straight Epi and for global health, but not for global Epi yet.

If you're remembering correctly, I think a couple pages back that I saw one rejection for GLEPI. Hope this helps! Those waiting on UNC, Valentine's Day tends to be a popular day for them... That's when I got my decision last year via email.

May I ask how long the process took? My application was verified on December 9th, and the confirmation email was sent on December 18th. They said it could take up to 90 days, but I'm hoping that it'll be a bit shorter.

I've about checked OPUS 28 times today. At least, it feels that way. I've only heard back from GWU so far, but out of 8 programs I want to know that I have a choice, you know? Though, I'd love more than anything to go back to Decatur. I miss Agnes Scott and Emory would be the perfect opportunity.
