MPH Fall 2015: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Before receiving an official email from Michigan of acceptance/rejection was it visible on the online portal???

My decision page reads... "An admission decision for your application to Health Behavior and Health Education has been made. You will be receiving an official email from the University of Michigan School of Public Health."

Did anyone else see this?

I am surprised Yale is not in the list!
There might be some kind of issue with their SPH's classification. There is a separate category for departments of public health within medical schools. Yale is classified there.

Yeah! I got an email from the Grad Division with a link to the official decision letter a few days later. I also got an additional email from the department congratulating me on the official acceptance. So, it's just a formality. Congrats on your acceptance!

Thank you! I still haven't gotten an official decision letter, so I am a bit worried.

I think it can vary depending on the department.

UMich's SPH/HBHE's notification process might differ from the one SPH/HMP uses. In studying threads from previous years, I've seen that one department will begin with an e-mail sent directly to the applicant followed by an update to the Wolverine account. Other times the Wolverine account will be the first to reflect an update, followed by an e-mail within a few hours or a day. This sounds like what might be happening with you.

If you don't receive an e-mail by Wednesday morning, I would send an e-mail to the admissions department asking for a follow-up. Be sure to reference the advisory you received on your Wolverine account. Best of luck to you.

Hi everyone!

Since it sounds like most of you have already submitted your application through SOPHAS, maybe you could answer my question.

I am applying to SDSU and UNMC and I have already selected both schools/programs. The deadline for SDSU is next Sunday February 15th and the deadline for UNMC is June 1st. When I e-submit, does it only submit to the school/program that I select? I'm ready to submit my application for SDSU, but I am not ready to submit my application for UNMC. How does this work?

You can go back and add more designations and SoPs later. I would suggest removing UNMC and submitting then doing UNMC later, as another designation.

I have another question to anyone that would like to answer! 🙂

I just uploaded my resume as a word doc (.docx) to SOPHAS and my resume got converted to a pdf. Since it got converted to a pdf document, the formatting is weird now (my resume went from one page to two pages and the spacing is off). Is this normal?? Did this happen to anyone else?

I have already designated UNMC as one of the schools on my application. Can I just delete UNMC and add it again when I am ready to submit?

Yes you can. I originally had a school, deleted before I paid, then added later. I have also added a few weeks after verified.

#15 explains adding schools after submitting btw.

FAQs and directions are very useful if you take the time to study them closely. If that's not your style, this may not end well for you, as I can assure you most of your fellow applicants (competitors) are doing exactly that. This isn't undergrad...

I'm in my first year at Boston University SPH (Global health & Epi) and would be happy to answer any questions for those of you interested in BU. I was on this post last year and found it super helpful!
That would be awesome! So as not to derail this thread: do you mind if we send you a private message or start a different thread?

Formatting can change whenever a .docx is opened on a machine different from the one it was created on. The only way you can be sure your formatting won't be messed up is to save the document as a PDF before you submit it.

That tends to happen with SOPHAS (even when you upload it as a pdf). I just took my off, made a couple of slight changes and when I re-uploaded it the second time the formatting was fine.

Yes, this happened to me! Apparently some fonts are not automatically embedded in PDFs so don't assume you're safe just because you uploaded a PDF. Always check. I foolishly assumed I was safe because my CV was in PDF form, but the formatting was disrupted in the SOPHAS version and unfortunately that is how it went out to all my programs. (You can also reduce the chances of something like that happening by using Times New Roman and avoiding any fancy spacing.)

Hrm, I've never had a problem with PDFs not embedding fonts, and I send PDFs of documents for professional printing all the time. That sucks that happened on your application! How bad was it?

You may have your default settings set to not embed all fonts. I was under the impression that the default setting was to embed all fonts into the pdf.

So do I--because of the work I do, my whole life is in PDF form. This is the first time I've had trouble.

It split up the spacing in a way that makes it difficult to determine what dates I did what, but does not necessarily make it difficult to read the other content (titles, degrees, descriptions.) So it's not the end of the world, but it's also not the impression I had hoped to make. I'm detail-oriented to the point of mild neurosis and this is just the sort of thing that drives me crazy.

I have another question for anyone that would like to answer! 🙂

I am filling out a supplemental application (CSU mentor) for a few California state schools that I am applying to. There is a miscellaneous section that asks about work experience.

To be more specific, the directions state, "List all applicable employment. Include military service but omit summer and part-time work not relevant to your career or academic goal. Indicate your present employer, if currently employed."

I don't have any relevant paid work experience in the field, but I have a lot of relevant volunteer experience. I'm working two jobs right now, but they are not related to public health at all. 🙁 Would I be able to list volunteer experience in this section or is this strictly paid work experience?

This is just the supplemental application, the departmental application is much more detailed as it will include my resume, purpose statement, etc. which will highlight my relevant volunteer experience.

What do you all think I should do??

Thanks.....The purpose of this thread is to support others (who happen to be your competitors) who are going through the application process. No need for rude responses. 🙂

Thanks! I ended up just saving it as a pdf and then resubmitted.

Columbia's first admitted students day is in less than a month and I am planning my trip. I plan on visiting nearby semi-affordable neighborhoods to check out where I would potentially look for housing. Does anyone know of a good resource or just know where might be reasonably affordable and safe areas within 20ish minutes from Columbia? I will continue to search around but you all are so helpful!

Also looking for the same idea on Washington University.

So I'm not from NYC and am not the best resource by any means but I have relatives there so I visit a lot. The main campus of Columbia is in the Morningside Heights area which in my opinon is really nice and seems pretty safe. And there's a shuttle from there to the medical campus where the PH school is.

I'm not from NY but I know grad students at Columbia and a bunch of them seem to live around West 96th street. So you could see if that area interests you...

I am still waiting to hear back although I have found several people who have had much quicker turn arounds for Tulane on their admissions decision. I know that the department I applied to (as well as a couple others) are actually going to be restructured for the Fall 2015 start (and I also know they are not sure exactly what this will look like yet), perhaps this is the cause of the wait.

Any advice on whether I should call the admissions office for a status update or am I just too anxious?

I received my acceptance to Tulane via email today, very excited!!

Woo! UMD public health has said I've been recommended for acceptance, but said "Only the UMD Graduate School has the authority to make official offers of admission to the university, yet in nearly every instance they have followed our recommendations. You should hear from the UMD Graduate School within 5 business days." Well...someone has to be part of the "nearly" cohort, right? Just kidding...

Is anyone still waiting to hear from UMich? I've been waiting for 9 weeks so far. Don't have a lot of hope for an acceptance because it has been so long, but id at least like to get some sort of decision.

While I'm sure most of us don't have any problem answering your questions and pointing you in the right direction most of these questions are answered by SOPHAS support/FAQ.

Feel free to send me a private message, others have been as well 🙂 Happy to answer questions and be of help

Just received my fedex email from emory 🙂 Though I'm a tad disappointed its not arriving until Friday 😛 it's such an absurd shipping time considering I live 5 min from the school.

On another note. I had no idea Drexel doesn't allow applications to different departments. I applied for the mph biostat and began an application for MSc biostat and they sent me an email today telling me to pick one. I'm wondering which one to pursue. Does any body know if this is the case for UNC as well?

Just got a big merit scholarship award from GWU! Getting news like that is so nice but makes choosing that much harder! I hope I can get some type of award at Emory!

That's awesome! I just got one from BU, but the rules make it less awesome than it seems. Were you notified by e-mail?

Got my Merit award from BU this afternoon, nice but the school is still hella expensive which is a shame because I really love their program. I'll wait and see what their entire financial aid package is gonna look like because I'm still not sure how much they truly are offering me.

Same here! They're the last school I'm waiting to hear from so I'm anxious to hear from them. Yes or no, I just want to know so I can start planning the next two years.

Got my Emory package today! Surprised at how fast it got up to the Boston area and kudos to FedEx for still making deliveries in this crazy blizzard

Did anyone get any scholarship info in their package? I didn't but I was hoping for it. 🙁
