MPH Fall 2015: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just got my acceptance at Columbia for Chronic Dieseas Epi. Now, does anyone know where I can sell one of these kidneys?
If you find someone that will give a good price for a kidney, let me know. I'd sell my eggs to fund school but they are kind of old.

You're not bothering me don't apologize! I just checked for you and nothing has changed. I still haven't received my official acceptance letter though so I wouldn't imagine I would see anything until then anyway.
Thank goodness nothings changed for anyone else either; since they never sent anything I was so paranoid I forgot something. I wish they would've sent an email telling me it was in review so I could relax.

has anyone heard form umass by chance? yay for the everyone hearing back today!

Did they email you or did you find out via the online application? CONGRATS 🙂 I am hoping the MSPH Intl. Health department starts sending out decisions soon.
Thanks! They emailed me saying to open my online application because a decision has been reached (so suspenseful). Then I opened my application portal and there it is! 🙂

I'm waiting on UMass too, haven't heard a thing since the initial "we got your application" email. 🙁

Is UTSPH still reviewing apps? They have a later deadline, but are their admissions rolling?

Yeah they didn't really keep in touch throughout the process!

Hey folks, hoping to get some help here.

I got into Columbia (Sociomedical + Global Health cert), UMich (Health Behav Health Ed), UCLA (Comm Health Science).

Still waiting to here from Berkeley, but I have a hunch I'll get in there too.

What are some resources you guys know of to compare theses school? Your own thoughts?
The US News Rankings are old, so not sure how I should consider those numbers.

Did everyone who got in to Columbia so far apply way before Dec 1? Congratulations to you all!!

Hey guys, so I got in today to Columbia, but do you know if the admission offers can be revoked? I got a bad grade last semester to the point where I have to retake the class this semester. I'm happy but worried that Columbia might revoke my offer

I actually submitted my application on Jan 3rd. My friend who also got accepted to the program didn't submit hers until Jan 19th.

Accepted to Columbia for epi with the global health certificate!! Somewhat unexpected with my GRE and GPA. So thrilled!!!!!!!!! Oh and rejected from Emory for GLEPI but I don't care. 🙂
Also how are we supposed to pay for this? 😵 Selling eggs may not be a bad way to go. Selling desirable poop to cure C. diff is a thing now too. Make $$$$ AND kick antibiotic resistant bacteria to the curb.

Congrats everyone on Columbia! Looks like another week with no news from Emory 🙁

Right there with ya 🙁 but my app didn't get to the department until January so I think It will be a week or two more for me before I find out...

Let me know if you find a good poop buyer

I looked in to egg harvesting for my very own self. Let me tell you, the hormone cycle alone makes me not want to sell my eggs. Holy hormonally induced sadness/rage/binge eating/vomiting/sadness/happy/sad/rage/cry. But hey. 10-25k depending on the market per cycle. Just don't leave sharp objects around during the injections.

Sorry to veer off topic but I can't let this one slide. $10-25k is NOT normal and should be a very very serious red flag. If you were a highly coveted racial minority who aced the SATs, went to Harvard, and is crazy fertile you still would not earn that much. $8,000 is at the high end for a first time donor and $10,000 is the absolute maximum even at the most bougie fertility clinics. If someone offers you more than that, run. The hormones also aren't that bad but I guess everyone's experience is different. Take it from someone who was flown to LA over 6 months to donate for one of the best reputed clinics in the world. And stop using the world harvesting please this is not shady back alley surgery it's creating babies.

I was looking into freezing my own eggs for later use because of endometriosis. I wanted to learn about it and see what my options were. I went to one of the top reproductive endocrinologists in the country, and it sounds like you did, too. In Palm Beach County, where I live, the average is 8-10k for donation (again, not what I was doing). I've read through endometriosis support groups that in some places in NYC, and depending on your genes, it isn't inconceivable to get 15+ per cycle. I've no experience with it, my eggs aren't good enough even if I wanted to. Instead, I'm trying to keep them so one day, maybe, I can have a baby.

Congrats to everyone that got into Columbia!! Seems to be only Epi and SMS acceptances so far though

Just got the admissions packet from BU. $12k merit award. It's nice to be offered money. Still expensive, so BU is officially out of the running.

Got an email from UCLA tonight that I'm "recommended for admission":soexcited: but that the Graduate Division makes the "final decision". :eyebrow: I'm kind of thrown by the language to be honest; "we are hopeful the [Graduate Division] will agree with our decision".

I guess that's an acceptance . . .? I really hope so, because UCLA would be very near if not the top of my list, but I still haven't applied to SDSU (and now I don't know if I should).

I'm also really surprised to be hearing anything so early, because my GRE quant score was okay but not great. I thought UCLA might be a stretch because of that. So, hey, maybe a little hope for fellow mid-50th percentile folk out there. Anyway, congrats to everyone who's been accepted.

Oh, and as far as the FAFSA for Columbia is concerned, I read those instructions but didn't personally follow them. I'm almost 30 years old and have been living on my own since I was 19. I wouldn't even be comfortable asking my parents these questions. Not to get on a rant, but my parents' income has exactly zero relevance to my being able to afford graduate school. I don't know why this bugged me so much, but it felt like this whole Columbia financial aid process was very . . . untoward, for lack of a better word. It just really turned me off to what is otherwise a very enticing program.

I got the same email too! Have you received the official acceptance letter yet? I am still not sure if that means we are accepted or not...

I saw this when I wasn't home. When I got home, I ran to the mailbox hoping I'd received mine, too. Sadly, not yet. I wouldn't count them out just yet. I know how much it is, trust me. (Plus the cost of living, and if you're from Florida like me, a winter wardrobe also costs a lot. Yet, I'll also need that at GW, so - ) But, I was looking at the tuition breakdown and it looks like, so long as the scholarships are not contingent on full-time status, we can still graduate on time in 2 years/4 semesters totally part-time, 11 hours a semester. Doing that, you'd be getting half of your tuition paid. If not, you can also graduate in 3 semesters if you take 18 hours a semester FT for two semesters (max under ft tuition) and then you'll only need 6 credit hours next semester! Or, just do 14 for three semesters. Anyway, I totally had sticker shock, but then I sat down and really started to think about it and looking at the required courses and the different electives, etc. and I think it's workable.

Oh! Plus, need-based scholarships usually come a bit later, apparently.

Does anyone know how to find out which schools of public health get the most funding for research? I have looked on the NIH database, but that shows overall university, which is helpful but not as helpful. Just another piece of data that could help influence a decision... Thanks!

Found it, from 2013: http://www.brimr.org/NIH_Awards/2013/NIH_Awards_2013.htm

Toward the bottom of the page, it shows funding by schools of public health. Important to compare with past years funding, as well.

I am surprised Yale is not in the list!

You've got great experiences! Did you gain most of them in the Peace Corps?!

I got the same email too! Have you received the official acceptance letter yet? I am still not sure if that means we are accepted or not...

Yeah! I got an email from the Grad Division with a link to the official decision letter a few days later. I also got an additional email from the department congratulating me on the official acceptance. So, it's just a formality. Congrats on your acceptance!
