MPH Fall 2015: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
For those accepted/ planning to go to emory in the fall and were wondering about housing, the Visit Emory Program & Housing Guide PDF is fantastic for those unfamiliar with the area. It has 10 pages devoted to housing and apartment complex options near emory as well amenities, stats, as well as students currently looking for summer subletters.

Congrats everyone hearing back from CU!! Anxious to hear back for other concentrations. My application wasn't complete until 01/01 so hopefully that doesn't make the wait too much longer. I live in CO and don't wanna leave!!
you guys are the first i've seen for anything about colorado... hope that means I'll be hearing soon! Congrats!

Thank you!! Not that you're the expert on Columbia housing, but I'm assuming that only students have access to that network? I'm asking because my best friend is packing up and moving with me wherever I go. I know, it's a little weird, but she's ready/in a position to move and my boyfriend isn't!

it depends on the person who posts the listing so i think you can find spaces for them, i traded apts with someone who got housing through it, good luck!

I haven't heard from UNC about scholarships yet, but if you're out-of-state, you can apply for NC residency after your 1st year (you just have to prove you've lived in NC for 1 year) and in-state tuition + fees is about half the amount of out-of-state tuition + fees. Not sure how "easy" it is to get residency in other states.

When I went to UNC open house they explained that getting residency isn't too difficult you just have to start the process as soon as you move to make sure everything is processed for the next year.

Easy peasy lemon...I'm still confused. So I assume that is 17,500 a semester, what is the range of point requirements for the degree?

I'm confused on that myself. For example, unless I'm misunderstanding the GW chart, it costs $1,365 per credit hour (well, it did this year) and for 45 credits, that means $61,425...thus I assume that figure for Columbia is per semester. Otherwise...wow, that would be a major bargain (well, as much as $35k can be).

yeah I think its per semester, no way that's the price for a full year. I have no clue what the range of points refers to, I just assumed it was something analogous to credit hours. But then wouldnt they just say credit hours? Who knows. Definitely worth bringing up with them ( I didnt apply there but *Almost* did )

For Columbia's Admitted Students Day, does anyone know what they're going to do for housing?

Alright this might look really stupid but I cannot for the life of me figure out what's Columbia semester/annual/two-years tuition fees. Could anybody please help me out? Thanks!

http://sfs.columbia.edu/tuition-rates-and-fees?year=57&school=23

I have Columbia listed as $17,500/semester on my spreadsheet. Not sure where I got that figure.

For Columbia's Admitted Students Day, does anyone know what they're going to do for housing?

Let me know if you hear of anything. I logged into their system to register and there was no info about lodging whatsoever, so I assumed that meant we fend for ourselves. My dad is coming with me because he loves NYC so we are just going to get a hotel nearby. But, if anyone hears of an opportunity to stay with a student or something let me know!

Has anyone had any luck corresponding with or talking to an actual person at Columbia? I know they're busy, but they sent me a contact name and I haven't gotten a response. Also tried reaching out a few times during the application process. I'm definitely going to visit but really want to go to school somewhere where the faculty and staff will make time for me. It's great to go to a school with such a reputable brand name, but I'm paying for training which includes research experiences and rec letters from faculty so I'm really nervous to go to a school that won't even answer questions about the program...

I got the same feeling with Columbia too. I did get connected with two students in the program today so I am going to ask them about their experience there.

Let me know what you find out! I've heard rumors that it's difficult to get time with professors, but I'd like to know if that's really the case and what the research opportunities are like for MPH students.

No problem. If you have any specific questions just PM them to me. I will make sure to include them in the email.

Uhh, has anyone received any financial information from Tulane?

Got rejected from UT Houston for Epi. Needless to say I'm really disappointed. I live really close to the school and was hoping to stay in my current area.

I have a (probably) naive question about financial aid. If one fills out FAFSA would it be possible to pay your tuition entirely from the financial aid package or are we supposed to put in some of our own money? I ask because I've never done this before and have no idea how this whole thing works. Thanks!

Nope no email. Got a packet in the mail. Well I wasn't in the public health school for my undergrad, but there was some crossover. From the people I know who went there the program is fine, but networking/job/internship connections are limited to the New Jersey area. For the price it is definitely still in consideration for me, as it would be a 1/4 of the cost of the other programs I'm interested.
Thanks for the info!

Got into Columbia HPM!! I feel like I've been waiting for years to say that! Such a relief knowing where I'll be for the next two years. I hope my fellow SDN'ers will feel the same relief soon.

Hi - to you and the rest of the people who applied for Columbia HPM, did you have a phone interview? When was your application verified and how soon after were you accepted? Any help you can give me would be great! 🙂

It is possible to pay the entire tuition with financial aid. Some people actually use financial aid to cover their living expenses as well.

No interviews for me, I live in Mexico - not sure that changed anything. My application was submitted 12/15th and verified 12/19th, I was accepted today 🙂

For Columbia's Admitted Students Day, does anyone know what they're going to do for housing?

I once stumbled upon an old page with details about visiting Columbia (that website, like most university websites, is a mess). It had information about hotels in the area, including budget options. I'm sure they'll send detailed information once you reserve your spot. I can't imagine them just leaving you to fend for yourself.

It's my 4th week since my application has been sent to my chosen department at Emory so I'm hoping I'll hear something this week or next week. I'm pretty much only checking Opus once a day to not go crazy haha I'll finally post my stats though:

Undergrad School: Eastern Washington U

  • Formed and trained committees of community leaders in order to create sustainable projects.
  • Formed and trained a group of 20 Peer Health Educators within the high school to teach other students topics such as self-esteem, personal strengths and values, alcohol and drugs, dealing with stress and sex education.

This is a really stupid question but hopefully you can help. Can I not make corrections to my FAFSA until it's processed? I forgot to add a school :/

Yep you have to wait until it's processed

Thanks! The second I submitted I noticed the error. Stupid me. Any who, did we reach a consensus regarding Columbia's financial aid/ parent info FAFSA thingie? I havn't heard back from them yet but I don't have high hopes after all the acceptances they recently doled out. Congrats btw.

My application was verfieid by the department and sent to the HPM Dept. on Jan. 5. I received an invite to interview around Jan. 28. I received a follow-up email to schedule my interview this past Monday and did my interview that same night. I found out yesterday (next day) that I got in. Hope that helps!

Hi there - did you get a phone call interview? And when did you submit your application?
Hi! I submitted my application to Columbia and SOPHAS on 10/5, it was verified 10/13. I received confirmation from Columbia that it was complete on 11/26 (I think they forgot to email me before that's why it was so late). I received the email about a phone call interview with a second year student on 1/5, I was contacted by the student on 1/7, I had the interview on 1/12 and found out on 2/10 that I got in.
Hope this helps!

GW's Facebook group for admitted students says that all recipients for merit or dean's scholarships have been already chosen...but that they're still rolling out notifications and will definitely be complete within the month. :dead:

I know one user has received partial funding from Michigan. Has anyone else heard? Any insight appreciated!

I believe somebody posted on here a couple of weeks ago that you do not have to include parental information for Columbia as long as you have supported yourself/held a full time job for 1+ years.

For people who got into Mount Sinai, how long did it take to hear back from the school?

I just heard this morning(!) for epidemiology and it took about a month from submission.
Thanks, do you have any information about the percent of applicants they accept into their program?
